A PS4 controller that will not charge is most often suffering from a bad cable, weak USB connection, dirty or worn micro-USB port, pairing problem, or aging battery—not automatically a failed battery. Test those causes in that order before buying parts.

Use a known-good micro-USB cable that supports charging and data, connect directly to the PS4, try both USB ports and an external powered source, then reset the DUALSHOCK 4. Sony’s official troubleshooting procedure is available on its DUALSHOCK 4 support page.

First, identify what “not charging” means

The DUALSHOCK 4 normally shows a slowly pulsing orange light while charging. The PS4 Quick Menu’s battery icon also blinks during charging. A brief orange flash, however, only shows that the controller attempted to make contact; it does not prove that the battery is accepting or retaining charge.

Symptom What it suggests What to try next
No light at all Cable, USB source, port, charging assembly, battery connection, or motherboard fault Test another cable, source, and port, then reset the controller
Orange light flashes once Poor contact, damaged cable, deeply discharged battery, or charging-board fault Try a second data cable and inspect the port
Orange light pulses but the charge never increases Degraded battery, loose battery connector, or charging-circuit problem Check whether it works wirelessly after charging
Works only while plugged in Battery is not holding a charge or is disconnected Consider a revision-matched battery
Charges only at one angle Worn, dirty, or damaged cable or micro-USB port Stop forcing the plug; inspect the port or charging assembly
Charges but will not connect Power-only cable, damaged data contacts, pairing state, or ribbon-cable problem Use a known-good data cable and reset it
Battery area is hot or swollen Potential lithium-ion battery hazard Stop charging and using the controller

These are clues rather than guarantees. Several different faults can produce the same light behavior.

PowerA USB Charging Cable for Playstation 4
  • Works with dualshock 4 controllers
  • 6.5ft cable
  • Made with quality ferrite coil
  • Usb to Micro-USB USB
  • Gold plated connectors

Try these no-cost fixes first

  1. Turn on the PS4. Connect the controller directly to a front or rear USB port.
  2. Use a known-good micro-USB data cable. Some cables carry power but not USB data, so they may appear to charge while preventing pairing. Do not use a hub during testing.
  3. Press the PS button. If the controller connects, leave it plugged in for at least 15–30 minutes if it was completely dead.
  4. Try the other PS4 USB port. A console port can be the problem even when the controller and cable are fine.
  5. Try an external powered source. Use a reputable USB power adapter or computer USB port. If it charges externally but not from the PS4, investigate the console port or its power settings.
  6. Test a second cable. A cable can work with another device yet fit poorly in a worn controller port.

Sony specifies approximately two hours to charge a fully depleted controller, although battery age, temperature, cable quality, and hardware condition affect the actual time. See Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 wireless troubleshooting guidance.

Can it charge while the PS4 is off?

Yes, if the PS4 is in Rest Mode and configured to supply USB power. Open:

Settings → Power Save Settings → Set Features Available in Rest Mode → Supply Power to USB Ports

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Depending on the console software, the choices are typically Always, 3 Hours, or Off. Choose an active power option, or charge from a powered USB source while the PS4 is on. Sony’s controller manual also notes that charging through some USB devices may not be effective.

  • 24 months manufacturer warranty

Inspect and safely clean the micro-USB port

  1. Unplug the cable.
  2. Shine a light into the controller’s micro-USB port.
  3. Look for lint, dust, bent contacts, cracked plastic, looseness, or a port pushed inward.
  4. If debris is visible, remove it gently with a wooden or plastic pick and, if available, gentle compressed air.

Do not use metal tools, liquids, force, or aggressive scraping. A plug that will not sit flush, feels unusually loose, or works only when held at an angle points toward a mechanical port, cable, or charging-assembly problem. Further troubleshooting possibilities are outlined in iFixit’s DUALSHOCK 4 charging guide.

Reset and pair the controller again

A reset can resolve a pairing or controller-state problem, but it will not repair a physically failed battery or port. Follow Sony’s procedure:

  1. Turn off and unplug the PS4.
  2. Disconnect the controller from the USB cable.
  3. Find the small recessed reset hole on the controller’s back.
  4. Press and hold the reset button with an unfolded paper clip for at least five seconds.
  5. Connect the controller to the PS4 with a known-good data-capable USB cable.
  6. Plug the cable directly into a PS4 USB port.
  7. Turn on the PS4 and press the PS button.

If it charges but still will not pair, test another controller with the same cable and console port. A power-only cable can charge without providing the data connection needed for setup.

What the symptoms tell you

It works only while connected

This is the strongest common indication of a battery that no longer holds a charge. It can also mean the battery connector is loose or the battery never received a real charge. If multiple known-good cables and power sources behave identically, the battery becomes the leading suspect.

Sony says battery duration gradually decreases with repeated use. An older controller may therefore charge normally but shut off immediately after unplugging. Do not puncture, squeeze, improvise-charge, or open a swollen battery. Sony’s safety and instruction documentation covers the controller’s lithium-ion battery.

It charges only when the plug is moved

That usually indicates a worn or obstructed micro-USB port, a damaged cable, or a failing charging assembly. Repeatedly wiggling the plug can worsen board or connector damage. Replace the cable first if it is suspect; if several cables behave the same way, inspect the controller’s port and internal assembly.

There is no light with any cable or source

After testing both PS4 ports, an external powered USB source, and a known-good data cable, a controller-side fault becomes likely. Possible causes include a disconnected battery, failed charging assembly, damaged port, or motherboard failure. Replacing the battery is not a guaranteed fix for a controller that never responds.

The orange light pulses, but the controller never becomes usable wirelessly

The battery may be degraded, disconnected, or unable to receive charge through the charging circuit. Let it charge for approximately two hours, then unplug it and test wireless operation. If it dies immediately, battery replacement is more plausible than a pairing fix.

Battery, cable, or controller? Use controlled comparisons

  • Same controller, second cable: if it works, replace the cable.
  • Same cable, second controller: if the second controller charges, the original controller is the likely fault.
  • Same controller, second PS4 USB port: this isolates a defective console port.
  • Same controller, external powered USB source: charging there but not on the PS4 points toward the console USB supply or Rest Mode setting.
  • Gentle cable movement: intermittent light or charging suggests a poor mechanical connection. Do not force the connector.

Replacing the battery

A battery replacement makes sense when the controller works normally while plugged in, shuts off immediately when unplugged, has a sound USB port, and has no other major faults. It is a relatively approachable repair, but it involves opening electronics and handling a lithium-ion cell.

Check the model printed on the rear label before ordering parts. Common families include CUH-ZCT1/CUH-ZCT1U and CUH-ZCT2/CUH-ZCT2U. Internal board families, including JDM-001, JDM-011, JDM-020, and JDM-030, can also affect compatibility. Not every advertised “PS4 controller battery” fits every DUALSHOCK 4. Match the voltage, connector, dimensions, model, and internal revision. iFixit provides DUALSHOCK 4 parts and model-specific repair guidance.

Replacing the charging assembly

Suspect the internal USB charging assembly when the port is loose or physically damaged, charging is angle-dependent, several cables fail, a battery replacement does not help, or the controller receives power but cannot communicate over USB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These assemblies and their ribbon or interconnect cables are revision-specific. An incompatible board may fail to fit, or it may restore charging while leaving USB data and pairing inoperative. Consult the correct guide for your model, such as iFixit’s CUH-ZCT1 charging-assembly replacement or CUH-ZCT2 replacement guide. After any repair, check connector orientation and ribbon-cable seating before assuming the new part is defective.

Could a charging dock work?

Some DUALSHOCK 4 charging stations use the controller’s EXT contacts instead of its micro-USB port. A dock can therefore be a useful workaround when the micro-USB port is worn but the battery and internal charging circuitry still work.

It cannot revive a dead battery, repair a failed charging circuit or motherboard, or restore USB data pairing. Compatibility depends on the controller and dock. Sony’s charging-station manual states that charging takes approximately two hours from empty and that the light bar turns off when charging is complete.

Repair or replace?

Situation Most sensible next step
Only the cable is untested or visibly damaged Buy a reputable micro-USB cable explicitly rated for charging and data
Works plugged in, port is firm, no other major defects Use a correctly matched replacement battery
Port is loose or charging is angle-dependent Replace the revision-specific charging assembly or use a dock as a limited workaround
Several faults, liquid damage, drift, broken shell, or motherboard symptoms Compare repair cost with another controller
Battery is swollen, hot, leaking, or physically damaged Stop using it and arrange proper lithium-battery/e-waste handling
Controller is under warranty or you lack repair tools Use PlayStation support and repair options

For an older controller with multiple problems, replacement is often more practical than buying several parts. Sony’s availability and prices change; compare the current repair quote with a live replacement listing rather than relying on an old price. A factory-recertified DUALSHOCK 4 may be an option where available through PlayStation Direct.

Stop troubleshooting immediately if

  • The battery is swollen, hot, leaking, punctured, or visibly damaged.
  • You smell burning or see smoke, melting, or scorching.
  • The controller has suffered liquid damage.
  • The USB port is being pulled inward or the board appears cracked.

Disconnect it from power, do not open or compress a damaged battery, and follow local lithium-battery or electronic-waste disposal guidance. Liquid exposure can damage the charging board, USB data path, and motherboard at the same time.

Quick checklist

  1. Read the CUH-ZCT model on the back before ordering parts.
  2. Use a known-good micro-USB cable that supports both power and data.
  3. Connect directly to each PS4 USB port, without a hub.
  4. Try a powered computer USB port or reputable USB adapter.
  5. Allow 15–30 minutes for a deeply depleted controller and up to about two hours for a full charge.
  6. Enable PS4 Rest Mode USB power if charging with the console off.
  7. Reset the controller for at least five seconds.
  8. Reconnect it to the PS4 and press PS to pair.
  9. Inspect and gently clean the port without metal tools or liquids.
  10. Choose a battery, charging assembly, dock, repair, or replacement according to the symptom—not before testing the cheaper causes.
