REANIMAL Review: A Grim, Unsettling Horror Adventure

Tarsier’s REANIMAL delivers grotesque imagery and oppressive horror in a solo or co-op adventure, though its familiar gameplay and fragmented story may divide players.

REANIMAL is a dark, image-driven horror adventure whose strongest asset is its oppressive world—not a dramatic reinvention of the studio’s familiar stealth, traversal, and chase-game formula. It can be played solo or in co-op, and its grotesque sights and shared journey give it real appeal, especially with a partner. Its fragmented story is more divisive: some players may find room for interpretation, while others may want the events to connect more clearly.

What is REANIMAL?

Developed by Tarsier Studios and published by THQ Nordic, REANIMAL follows a brother and sister searching for their missing friends and trying to escape a hostile island. The adventure moves between travel by boat and exploration on foot, with danger shaping both. The premise is straightforward; the game’s unsettling imagery and the questions raised by its story are less so.

The game launched on February 13, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The developer lists PC availability through Steam, Windows Store, GOG, and Epic Games Store. THQ Nordic’s launch announcement says the game received “generally favorable reviews across all platforms on Metacritic,” but gives no numerical score.

Does REANIMAL work better alone or in co-op?

Both options are supported: you can play solo, locally with another player, or online. Tarsier also lists cross-play and Friend’s Pass. The official site describes a shared, directed camera, a deliberate design choice that frames the siblings together and is intended to heighten claustrophobia. That setup makes co-op a natural fit for the game’s shared peril, but it does not make a partner a requirement.

#1 Best Overall
The Sinking Forest (PS5)
  • Standard Edition includes: Full Physical Game, Reversible Cover and Ofuda Amulet
  • Spectacular graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5: Experience stunning visuals featuring realistic environments, advanced lighting effects and a level of detail that heightens every moment of tension
  • A tragic and macabre horror story: Immerse yourself in a dark and emotionally intense narrative, where fear comes not only from what lurks in the shadows
  • Survival Horror where enemies can kill you (and you can defend yourself!): face lethal enemies in an environment where every encounter can be deadly. You are not helpless: you can defend yourself to survive... if you have the courage to do so
  • An incredible Japanese setting: delve into environments inspired by Japanese culture and folklore, with a dense, eerie and authentic atmosphere. Each scenario is a key piece of horror

PC Gamer’s reviewer found the game especially fun with a friend, though that is one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee that every player will prefer co-op. If you enjoy talking through tense encounters with someone beside you or online, co-op has clear appeal. If you would rather control the pace yourself, the official solo option means you can play without arranging a partner.

What makes the horror effective?

The art direction is the game’s clearest strength. Its island is presented as a deeply disturbing place, and the creature and environmental imagery lean into the grotesque and unexpected rather than relying only on conventional scares. PC Gamer described the world as beautifully disturbing; GamesRadar likewise singled out the creative, unsettling imagery.

That visual imagination gives the journey a strong identity. Boat travel and on-foot exploration provide different ways to move through the island, while stealth and chase sequences turn its hostile spaces into immediate threats. The effect depends less on explaining every detail than on making the next stretch of the journey feel dangerous and strange.

How does the gameplay hold up?

Stealth, traversal, and trial-and-error chase sequences will feel recognizable to players familiar with Tarsier’s earlier work. PC Gamer found the structure familiar and criticized the limited evolution of its design, while still judging the game mostly fun. The distinction matters: REANIMAL has effective situations and striking presentation, but its core play is not necessarily a major step forward for the studio.

Whether that trade-off works for you depends on what you want from a horror adventure. If you value a tightly authored route through disturbing set pieces, the established structure can support the atmosphere. If you are looking for extensive mechanical variety or a substantial redesign of familiar stealth-and-chase ideas, the reviews suggest more modest ambitions.

Is the story satisfying?

The story is fragmented and leaves room for interpretation. PC Gamer saw more sophistication in the storytelling while acknowledging its ambiguity; GamesRadar found the events insufficiently cohesive. These are different judgments about how well the same approach works, rather than evidence that the plot has one settled explanation.

That uncertainty may suit players who enjoy assembling meaning from unsettling images and partial clues. Those who want the game to tie its events together clearly may find the narrative less satisfying than its visual storytelling. The central search for the missing friends gives the journey direction, but it does not remove that divide in critical response.

Verdict

REANIMAL is most compelling as an oppressive, visually inventive horror journey. Its solo and co-op options make it accessible to different play styles, and co-op may bring extra enjoyment for players who like experiencing tension with someone else. The familiar gameplay structure and divided response to its fragmented narrative keep it from being an unqualified recommendation: go in for the atmosphere and imagery, not for a guaranteed leap forward in mechanics or a neatly resolved story.
