To record a game or app on Windows 11, open it, click inside its window, and press Windows + Alt + R. Press the same shortcut again to stop. Windows saves the recording automatically as an MP4 in VideosCaptures.
Xbox Game Bar is designed mainly for recording a game or individual app—not the entire Windows desktop, File Explorer, or a selectable screen region.

Before you start
- Use Windows 11 with Xbox Game Bar enabled.
- Open the game or app you want to record and keep it focused.
- Make sure the drive containing your Videos folder has enough free space.
- If you need narration, connect the intended microphone and check its Windows input settings.
- Install pending Windows updates and graphics-driver updates if recording fails.
You do not need to install separate recording software for a basic game or app clip. Microsoft’s documented workflow is centered on recording an active game or application, so compatibility can vary with protected video, elevated windows, hardware acceleration, and unsupported surfaces.

- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Search Settings for Xbox Game Bar.
- Open the matching setting and turn on the option that allows Xbox Game Bar to open and record game clips. The exact wording can vary between Windows builds and languages.
- Press Windows + G. If the Game Bar overlay appears, it is available and enabled.
Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar instructions use Settings search, which is more reliable than depending on a fixed Settings navigation path.

How to record a game or app
- Open the game or app.
- Click inside its window so it is the active application.
- Press Windows + Alt + R to start recording.
- Continue using the game or app. A recording indicator should show that capture is in progress.
- Press Windows + Alt + R again to stop.
When recording ends, Windows saves the clip automatically. You can also press Windows + G to open the overlay and use the Capture widget instead of the keyboard shortcut.
Record your voice and computer audio
Toggle the microphone
Press Windows + Alt + M to turn microphone capture on or off while recording. Check the microphone indicator in Game Bar before starting a long clip; a shortcut pressed accidentally can leave narration disabled. Make a short test recording before capturing an important presentation, bug report, or gameplay session.
Choose system and app audio
- Press Windows + G.
- Open the Settings widget.
- Go to Capturing.
- Open the audio setting and choose the broadest appropriate option, such as All, if you want relevant system, app, and microphone audio.
- Record a brief test and play it back.
Labels and available choices can differ by Windows build. System or app audio means sound produced by Windows or the recorded application; microphone audio means your voice or room sound. Choosing a game- or app-limited option may exclude sounds from other applications. Protected or exclusive audio is not guaranteed to be captured.

Find your recording
Game Bar recordings are normally stored at:
C:Users<username>VideosCapturesTo find a clip:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select Videos.
- Open Captures.
- Sort by Date modified if the newest file is not obvious.
- Play the MP4 before deleting it or starting another lengthy recording.
Filenames normally include the game or app name and the recording date and time. If your Videos folder is redirected to OneDrive or another location, the physical path may differ. You can also search File Explorer for .mp4.

Why Game Bar is not a universal desktop recorder
Game Bar is a good fit for a PC game, a desktop application, or a reproducible software problem inside one app. It can sometimes record a browser window or browser-based app, but results depend on the specific window and capture conditions.

It is a poor fit when you need to record the whole desktop, move between unrelated windows, capture File Explorer or Settings, select a rectangle, pause frequently, combine several sources, or create a webcam-and-overlay layout. This is practical suitability guidance rather than a guarantee that every non-game window will fail: Game Bar’s documented workflow is app- and game-focused.
For a selected screen area or general desktop activity, Microsoft recommends using Snipping Tool instead.
Troubleshoot Xbox Game Bar recording
Windows + Alt + R does nothing
- Confirm Xbox Game Bar is enabled in Settings.
- Open the target app and click inside it.
- Press Windows + G to check that the overlay opens.
- Try starting from the Capture widget.
- Restart the app and test again.
- Install pending Windows updates and update the graphics driver.
- Test a normal desktop application. The original target may be protected, elevated, unsupported, or otherwise unavailable to Game Bar.
The recording is blank
Bring the target app to the foreground before starting and click inside it. Then test another ordinary application. A blank result can indicate that the wrong window was active, the app does not expose its content to Game Bar, protected video is involved, or a graphics-driver or hardware-acceleration conflict exists. Use Snipping Tool for a selected area or OBS Studio when you need more control over the capture source.

Microphone audio is missing
Check that Windows has microphone access, the correct input device is selected in Windows sound settings, and the Game Bar microphone control is enabled. Also make sure Windows + Alt + M was not pressed during recording. Make a short test clip before repeating the full task.
System audio is missing
Open Windows + G, go to Settings > Capturing, and choose the broadest suitable audio option, such as All. Because the labels vary by build, verify the selection with a short recording.
The MP4 cannot be found
Check VideosCaptures, sort by date modified, and search for .mp4. Confirm that recording was stopped normally rather than ending because the application closed, the computer shut down, or the system entered sleep. Also check whether Windows has redirected your Videos folder.

Recording stops unexpectedly
Check available storage and make a shorter test clip. Unexpected stops can result from a full drive, an application crash, sleep, an update or restart, or a graphics and hardware-encoding problem. Play each test file before beginning a long recording.

Snipping Tool: selected areas and basic desktop recording
Use Snipping Tool when you need to select and refine part of the screen, record general desktop activity, or pause during a recording. Microsoft also describes previewing and sharing the result. See Microsoft’s Windows screen-recording guidance.
Microsoft Clipchamp: recording plus editing
Microsoft Clipchamp is better when you want to record and then trim the result, add titles, or make a basic presentation. It is available through Start or the taskbar on supported installations, and may be installed from the Microsoft Store if absent. Current plan, export, and pricing details vary and are not necessary for choosing Game Bar.
OBS Studio: advanced capture and streaming
Use OBS Studio for full-desktop recording, multiple scenes and sources, webcam layouts, streaming, separate application-audio sources, or detailed encoding control. It requires more setup than Game Bar. OBS documents Game Capture, application-audio capture, and GPU-selection troubleshooting. On laptops with integrated and discrete graphics, the GPU choice can affect capture. Game Capture can also fail with some games or conflict with overlays.
Bottom line
For a quick MP4 of one Windows 11 game or app, Xbox Game Bar is the simplest choice: enable it once, focus the app, press Windows + Alt + R, and find the result in VideosCaptures. Use a short test to verify video, microphone, and system audio. Choose Snipping Tool for a screen region or broader desktop activity, Clipchamp for light editing, and OBS Studio for advanced capture.
