ASUS’s premium Xbox-branded model combines AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of memory, a large 80Wh battery, 1TB of storage and significantly more controller-like grips. Its Xbox Full Screen Experience also makes Windows easier to navigate on a handheld.
That is a strong package, particularly for Xbox and Game Pass users. But the device launched on October 16, 2025, and its central compromise remains unchanged: this is still a Windows 11 PC, not a portable Xbox console. The software reduces friction without eliminating launcher logins, updates, compatibility problems or desktop-level maintenance. At this price, those limitations matter.

It is important not to confuse four similarly named products:
- ROG Xbox Ally X: the black, premium model covered here.
- ROG Xbox Ally: the less expensive white model with a Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and a 60Wh battery.
- ROG Ally X: ASUS’s separate 2024 handheld, without Xbox branding.
- ROG Ally: the original 2023 model.
The Xbox Ally X is therefore best understood as an Xbox-integrated Windows gaming PC. It is not a portable Xbox Series X|S, and a game owned on an Xbox console is not automatically available for local installation. Depending on the title, access may instead come through a native PC version, Xbox Play Anywhere, cloud streaming or Remote Play. Xbox explains those distinctions on its official handheld page.

The Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme name includes an NPU, but that does not automatically translate into large gaming gains. Xbox describes some NPU-related capabilities as preview features, and their usefulness depends on software support. The practical reasons to want this model are its overall platform, memory capacity and power envelope—not an assumption that the NPU will transform every game.
A more comfortable, more controller-like design
The most immediately meaningful redesign is the chassis. The deeper, contoured grips are inspired by an Xbox Wireless Controller, giving the handheld a shape that feels less like a flat PC slab and more like a controller with a screen attached. ASUS also includes full-size analog sticks, Xbox, View, Menu, Command Center and Library buttons, two assignable rear buttons, impulse triggers, HD haptics and a six-axis IMU. ASUS details the control and ergonomic changes here.
Hands-on coverage has generally praised the grip shape, especially for extended play. The trade-off is size and weight: at 715g, the Ally X is larger and heavier than the original Ally family. That is not automatically uncomfortable—deeper grips can distribute weight better—but users with smaller hands may experience the redesign differently from people accustomed to a full-size controller.
The rear buttons are useful for shortcuts and game-specific actions, although their placement makes accidental presses a question worth checking during setup. Competitive players should also consider whether they prefer these sticks, triggers and D-pad to the alternatives on Steam Deck and Lenovo’s Legion Go family. The design’s clearest advantage is comfort, not portability.

The Ally X can boot into an Xbox-oriented full-screen interface designed for controller navigation. It presents installed games from major PC storefronts in a more accessible library and reduces the need to interact with tiny desktop controls. Xbox also says the mode is intended to reduce background Windows activity, potentially leaving more resources available to games.
That is a meaningful improvement over treating a handheld like a miniature laptop. The Xbox, View, Menu, Command Center and Library buttons give the device a clearer console-style flow, and the library aggregation can put games from different launchers in one place.
But the underlying system remains Windows 11 Home. Steam, Epic, EA and other launchers still have their own logins and behaviors. Windows updates, desktop dialogs, scaling problems, controller issues, anti-cheat incompatibilities and game-specific settings do not disappear. A title may still send you back to a storefront or desktop before it launches.
That makes Full Screen Experience a launcher and handheld shell, not a closed-console operating system such as SteamOS. Reviewers have also disagreed about how much the reduced background activity helps in practice: PC Gamer did not find an obvious battery-life improvement from it alone, while Tom’s Guide reported performance benefits in its testing. The safe conclusion is that the interface improves access and navigation, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed performance mode.
How Xbox games work on the Ally X
Native PC games
Games installed through the Xbox PC app and PC Game Pass sit alongside titles from Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA and other compatible Windows stores. The unified library is convenient, but it cannot standardize every storefront’s DRM, login process, save system or launcher behavior.
Xbox Play Anywhere
Supported Play Anywhere purchases can work across Xbox consoles, PC and supported handhelds without requiring a second purchase. This applies only to participating games with supported PC versions; it does not make every Xbox console game locally installable on the handheld.
Cloud Gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming can provide access to games that are not installed locally. Image quality and responsiveness depend on internet speed, latency, congestion and subscription eligibility. Cloud play is not equivalent to local rendering: a weak connection can produce compression, stuttering, input delay or disconnects.
Remote Play
Remote Play streams games from your Xbox console to the Ally X. It is useful for reaching a console library away from the TV, but it requires the console to be configured and available, along with a stable network connection.

- [Xbox experience brought to life by ROG] : The Xbox gaming legacy meets ROG's decades of premium hardware design in the ROG Xbox Ally. Boot straight into the Xbox experience just like a console.
- [Xbox Game Bar integration] : Launch Game Bar with a tap of the Xbox button or play your favorite titles natively from platforms like Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games, or Windows games on the go.
- [All your games, all your progress]: Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally gives you access to your full library of PC games from Xbox and other game stores. With Xbox Play Anywhere, you can pick up right where you left off on your PC or Xbox and jump back into the game anytime.
- [Never stop gaming]: Powered by ultra-efficient AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, the ROG Xbox Ally offers console-caliber performance and can game for hours, even away from a wall outlet.
- [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 1TB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
Performance: powerful, but not a 1080p/120fps console
The Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and 24GB of fast LPDDR5X memory give the Ally X the hardware for high-end handheld PC gaming. The 24GB shared-memory configuration can help an integrated GPU and leave more room for multitasking, but it does not turn the device into a discrete-GPU gaming laptop.
Demanding games will commonly require a compromise between resolution, image quality, frame rate and power draw. In practice:
- 720p or 900p with upscaling is often more realistic for demanding AAA games.
- 1080p makes more sense for older, lighter or well-optimized titles, usually with reduced settings where necessary.
- 120Hz benefits lighter games and variable-refresh smoothness; it does not mean modern AAA games will run at 120 frames per second.
- Performance changes with the selected power mode, charger status, resolution, graphics settings, drivers and frame caps.
- FSR, RSR and AFMF can improve perceived smoothness or performance, but generated frames do not remove input latency and can introduce visual artifacts.
A credible comparison with the 2024 ROG Ally X requires the same game, driver, power profile, resolution and settings. Without that controlled test, it is not responsible to attach a precise percentage advantage to the newer model.
For a repeatable hands-on test, use one demanding AAA game, one well-optimized cross-platform title, one indie game and one older PC game. Record resolution, upscaling, power mode, frame rate and whether the device is plugged in. Compare battery and mains performance separately.
Battery life: 80Wh is an advantage, not a promise
The 80Wh battery is one of the Ally X’s clearest hardware strengths. It is substantially larger than the 60Wh cell in the standard ROG Xbox Ally and gives the premium model more capacity for demanding mobile play.
Capacity is not the same as runtime. A high-power AAA game can drain the battery quickly, while an indie game, an older title or a capped low-power profile can last much longer. Brightness, refresh rate, wireless use, resolution, frame caps and background software all matter.
Review results vary. WIRED reported around six hours in some usage patterns, while PC Gamer’s experience differed and did not find an obvious endurance gain attributable to the restricted background processes alone. Treat ASUS “up to” claims as conditions-based figures, not typical AAA battery life.
The useful distinction is:
- Battery capacity: the objective 80Wh specification.
- Runtime: how long a particular game lasts under particular settings.
- Efficiency: how much performance the device delivers for each watt.
Higher performance modes also mean more fan noise and heat. Lower-power modes can improve endurance, but usually require lower resolution, reduced settings, upscaling or a frame cap.

Display, storage and ports
The 7-inch 1920×1080 IPS display runs at up to 120Hz, supports AMD FreeSync Premium variable refresh and reaches a listed 500 nits. Gorilla Glass Victus and an anti-reflection treatment add practical protection and visibility benefits. It is a capable panel, but it remains LCD rather than OLED, and its 16:9 format and 7-inch size are conservative beside some newer handheld designs.
There is also a performance irony to 1080p: many demanding games will render below native resolution and upscale, so the panel’s resolution is not automatically a gaming advantage. The 120Hz mode is most valuable for lighter games, desktop responsiveness and variable-refresh behavior.
The 1TB M.2 2280 SSD provides useful room for large PC games and is a more convenient upgrade format than some shorter handheld-specific drives. The UHS-II microSD slot makes library expansion easy, but card speed and game behavior vary. Do not assume every title will load or perform exactly like it does from the internal SSD.

ROG Xbox Ally X vs 2024 ROG Ally X
This is the hardest upgrade to justify. The 2024 ROG Ally X already has 24GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and an 80Wh battery. The newer Xbox model’s major reasons to upgrade are its newer platform, redesigned body, Xbox Full Screen Experience and ecosystem features—not simply a larger battery or more storage.
Owners who value Xbox integration, Play Anywhere, Game Pass PC access or the new grips may find a reason to switch. Owners expecting a dramatic generational performance leap should wait for controlled comparisons or consider keeping the 2024 model.
ROG Xbox Ally X vs standard ROG Xbox Ally
The premium model’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB of RAM, 1TB SSD and 80Wh battery make it the obvious choice for demanding local PC gaming. The standard Ally’s 16GB memory, 512GB storage and 60Wh battery make more sense for buyers who mainly play lighter games or prioritize price.
ROG Xbox Ally X vs Steam Deck OLED
Steam Deck OLED offers a more unified handheld-first experience through SteamOS and generally presents a stronger value proposition. The Ally X counters with broader Windows storefront compatibility, direct Xbox integration and a higher-performance hardware target for demanding PC games.
Best Value
- DISPLAY SPECS: 7-inch FHD screen with impressive 120Hz refresh rate delivers smooth, responsive gaming visuals at 1920 x 1200 resolution
- PROCESSING POWER: Equipped with AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor for high-performance mobile gaming and multitasking capabilities
- STORAGE & MEMORY: Features a generous 24GB memory configuration and spacious 1TB SSD for extensive game library storage
- OPERATING SYSTEM: Runs on Windows platform, providing access to extensive PC gaming libraries and applications
- DESIGN FEATURES: Touchscreen functionality with Wi-Fi connectivity in a portable handheld form factor, finished in sleek black
Choose Steam Deck OLED if your library is primarily on Steam and software coherence matters most. Choose the Ally X if Game Pass PC, Windows launchers or higher-end performance matter more than simplicity.
ROG Xbox Ally X vs Lenovo Legion Go-class handhelds
Lenovo’s Legion Go family competes with larger display options, distinctive controls on some models and its own Windows handheld approach. The decision is less about a universal specification winner than priorities: the Ally X emphasizes controller-like grips, Xbox integration and an 80Wh battery, while Legion Go models may appeal to buyers who want a larger screen or detachable controls.
Is the $999.99 price justified?
The US list price is $999.99, and that price changes the standard by which every feature should be judged. The device competes with premium handheld PCs, gaming laptops, consoles and cheaper handhelds—not just with the original Ally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe headline price also is not necessarily the complete setup cost. Depending on how you use it, you may still need a dock, protective case, microSD card, external display, additional storage or travel accessories. A Game Pass subscription may add value for an Xbox user, but it does not remove local storage limits, Windows compatibility issues or the internet requirement for cloud gaming. Subscription pricing and plan benefits vary by market and can change, so check the current Xbox listing before adding them to the budget.
The value case is strongest when the 80Wh battery, 1TB SSD, controller-like ergonomics and Xbox features will be used regularly. It is weak when the buyer mainly plays indie games, usually plays near an outlet or could get similar satisfaction from a cheaper handheld, a discounted 2024 Ally X or a Steam Deck OLED.
Who should buy the ROG Xbox Ally X?
Buy it if:
- You want the strongest Xbox-integrated Windows handheld rather than a SteamOS-first device.
- You regularly play demanding PC games away from a desk.
- You value the 80Wh battery and 1TB of storage.
- You prefer full-size, controller-like grips.
- You use Game Pass, Xbox Remote Play or Play Anywhere.
- You want several PC storefronts without replacing Windows.
- You accept the $999.99 premium for hardware and convenience.
Skip it if:
- You mainly play indie games or older titles.
- You already own the 2024 ROG Ally X and want a major performance jump.
- You want the lowest-cost handheld experience.
- You want OLED contrast or a larger display.
- You dislike Windows maintenance and launcher friction.
- You expect the simplicity of a conventional console.
- You usually play close to an outlet, reducing the value of the larger battery.
- You would rather spend $1,000 on a gaming laptop, desktop upgrade or cheaper handheld plus accessories.
Verdict
The ROG Xbox Ally X is one of the most capable and comfortable Xbox-branded Windows handhelds. Its best features work together: the controller-like chassis is more inviting for long sessions, the 80Wh battery gives it meaningful capacity, 24GB of RAM and the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme target demanding PC games, and Xbox Full Screen Experience makes the device less awkward to navigate.
But it does not escape the fundamental Windows handheld trade-off. The interface is better, not seamless; Xbox branding does not guarantee native console compatibility; and the 120Hz LCD cannot make demanding games run at 120fps. With a $999.99 price tag, those compromises are difficult to overlook.
Recommended Free Tools
Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X if Xbox integration, battery capacity, broad Windows compatibility and premium ergonomics are worth paying for. Otherwise, a discounted 2024 ROG Ally X, Steam Deck OLED or less expensive Windows handheld is likely the smarter buy.
