Craft a recovery compass by placing one regular compass in the center of a crafting table and eight echo shards in the surrounding slots. After you respawn, hold it in the same dimension where you most recently died; its needle points toward that death location. It spins instead if you have never died, if the tracked death is in another dimension, or if the compass has no usable death location.

What a recovery compass does
A recovery compass is a navigation item for finding the location of your latest death. It records one target: your most recent death position. Once you respawn, carry the compass in the dimension where that death occurred and follow the needle toward the area where your dropped items may still be located.

The compass provides direction only. It does not teleport you, restore items automatically, prevent despawning, or make the recovery site safe. You still have to travel to the area, identify the exact spot, and collect anything that remains.
Recovery compass recipe
| Ingredient | Amount | Placement | How to obtain it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular compass | 1 | Center slot of a 3×3 crafting grid | Crafted from one iron ingot and one redstone dust |
| Echo shard | 8 | One in each of the eight slots surrounding the center | Found in ancient-city chests |
The recipe is symmetrical: the compass occupies the middle, while every other slot contains an echo shard. A lodestone is not part of this recipe.

Craft it step by step
- Open a crafting table so the 3×3 crafting grid is available.
- Put one regular compass in the center square.
- Fill all eight surrounding squares with echo shards.
- Take the recovery compass from the result slot and place it in your inventory or hotbar.
If the result does not appear, check that you used a normal compass rather than another navigation item and that all eight outer slots contain echo shards. The recipe consumes the ingredients when you take the finished compass.
How to make the regular compass
The base compass is a separate item. Craft it with one iron ingot and one redstone dust. That compass normally points toward world spawn and is the component required for a recovery compass.
Because the regular compass has its own navigation purpose, do not assume that converting it into a recovery compass preserves a world-spawn or lodestone target. The recovery compass is a different item with a last-death function.

Where to find echo shards
Echo shards generate as chest loot in ancient cities. The Minecraft Wiki loot-table crawl from 2026 lists one to three echo shards per chest, with a 29.8% chance for a chest to contain them. That figure is version-sensitive: confirm the Minecraft edition and release version you are playing before treating the chance as a planning guarantee.
Echo shards are non-renewable under the information available here, so a recovery compass represents a meaningful resource cost. An expedition that yields too few shards may require searching additional ancient-city chests.
Prepare before entering an ancient city
- Carry enough food, tools, blocks, and spare equipment for a dangerous underground trip.
- Record your coordinates before entering the Deep Dark and mark a route that you can follow back out.
- Leave storage space for echo shards and other chest loot.
- Decide how many recovery compasses you actually need before spending the shards; each one requires a new regular compass and eight shards.
- Keep your exit route understandable. A compass made after the expedition is useful only if you can return to your base and use it after a death.
The ancient-city route is the limiting step in the recipe. Mining iron and redstone for the base compass is comparatively straightforward; locating and surviving the city is what determines whether you can make the recovery item.

How to use a recovery compass after you die
- Respawn after the death that you want to recover from.
- Make sure you are in the same dimension as that death. For example, a compass tracking a death in the Nether must be used in the Nether, not in the Overworld.
- Hold the recovery compass in your hand or select it so you can watch the needle.
- Travel in the direction indicated by the needle.
- When you reach the area, search the terrain for dropped items rather than expecting the compass to identify an exact block or open a recovery menu.
The compass tracks the latest recorded death for its player. If you die again, the newer death replaces the previous target, so a later accident can redirect the compass away from the first death site.
Why is my recovery compass spinning?
Random spinning is normally a state message, not a broken item. Check each condition below.
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The needle spins before you have ever died | No personal death location has been recorded yet | There is no recovery target to follow. The compass becomes useful only after a death. |
| It spins after you respawn in another dimension | You are not in the dimension containing the latest death | Return to the death’s dimension and check the compass there. |
| It worked, then points somewhere different after another accident | A later death replaced the previous target | Use the newly indicated location; the older death is no longer the tracked one. |
| It spins even though you remember dying | You may be holding it in the wrong dimension, or the relevant death location is not the one you expected | Confirm the dimension and, with cheats enabled, inspect the stored location using the command below. |
A spinning needle does not mean the compass can guide you across dimensions. The item has to be used where its stored death location exists.

Nether and End behavior
Dimension matching is mandatory. A death in the Overworld, Nether, or End is useful to a recovery compass only when you are currently in that same dimension. Carrying the item through a portal does not make it point across the boundary; in the other dimension, the needle spins.
Plan the return route accordingly. If you died in the Nether, recover or rebuild a route to the Nether before relying on the compass. If you died in the End, you must be back in the End for the stored direction to work.
Check the stored death location with a command
When cheats are enabled, you can inspect the player data field that stores the latest death location:

/data get @s LastDeathLocation
Run the command as the affected player. The returned data can confirm whether a death location exists and help you verify the recorded dimension when the compass behavior is confusing. Using the command does not move you or recover items; it only displays stored data.

What happens if you die while carrying it?
With keepInventory disabled, a recovery compass in your inventory can drop at the new death site like other inventory items. That creates a practical risk: the tool intended to guide you to an earlier death may be left at the later one.
If you are attempting a recovery, take only equipment you can afford to lose, secure valuable supplies elsewhere, and consider carrying a spare compass when your echo-shard supply permits. A spare does not change the tracked target, but it can leave you with a usable navigation item if the first one is dropped.
Hardcore mode limitation
Hardcore mode provides no normal respawn after death. Since the recovery compass is designed to guide a living player back after respawning, it has no practical recovery role in a standard Hardcore death. Its recipe and item behavior do not create a second life or bypass Hardcore’s death rule.
Recovery compass versus a normal compass
| Feature | Recovery compass | Normal compass |
|---|---|---|
| Primary target | Your latest recorded death location | World spawn |
| Recipe cost | One compass plus eight echo shards | One iron ingot plus one redstone dust |
| Dimension requirement | Must be used in the dimension of the tracked death; otherwise it spins | Its ordinary world-spawn behavior does not replace last-death tracking |
| Can it teleport you? | No; it only indicates a direction | No; it is also a directional item |
| Can a lodestone replace it? | No. A lodestone is not a recovery-compass ingredient | A normal compass can be used with a lodestone to mark a chosen location |
| Best use | Returning to the latest death site | General navigation toward world spawn or a marked lodestone location |
A normal compass is therefore not a substitute for a recovery compass when the goal is finding dropped items after death. Conversely, a recovery compass is an expensive choice for routine base navigation because it consumes eight echo shards and follows death data rather than a deliberately selected landmark.

Before taking the trip
- Write down the coordinates and dimension of your base, portal, and any route you expect to use.
- Store irreplaceable items before entering a dangerous area.
- Keep food, blocks, and basic tools available at a safe staging point.
- Confirm that you have a recovery compass in a location you can reach after respawning.
Immediately after respawning
- Check the dimension shown by your surroundings and portal network.
- Select the recovery compass and verify that the needle behaves directionally rather than spinning.
- Travel deliberately; avoid a second death that would overwrite the target.
- Search the destination area carefully. The compass gives a direction, not a precise item marker.
If the compass is unavailable
Use remembered coordinates, screenshots, written notes, or the stored location command if cheats are enabled. A recovery compass cannot help if it was left at the death site, destroyed, or never crafted.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes
- Using seven shards: the recipe requires all eight outer slots.
- Putting the compass anywhere but the center: the regular compass belongs in the middle of the 3×3 grid.
- Expecting cross-dimension guidance: the needle spins outside the death’s dimension.
- Following an old target after another death: only the latest death is tracked.
- Assuming the item protects loot: it provides no item protection, teleportation, or safety.
- Entering Hardcore expecting to respawn: Hardcore’s no-respawn rule removes the normal recovery use case.
Quick decision guide
| Your goal | Use this item or method | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Find your latest dropped items | Recovery compass in the death’s dimension | It targets your latest recorded death. |
| Navigate toward world spawn | Normal compass | That is the regular compass’s standard target. |
| Mark a chosen base or landmark | Normal compass with a lodestone | The lodestone provides a selected reference point. |
| Recover from a death in another dimension | Travel to that dimension first, then use the recovery compass | The compass cannot point across dimensions. |
| Recover after a Hardcore death | No normal recovery-compass solution | Hardcore does not provide a standard respawn. |
Key takeaways
- Recipe: one regular compass in the center, surrounded by eight echo shards.
- Echo shards come from ancient-city chests; a 2026 Minecraft Wiki loot-table crawl reports one to three shards with a 29.8% chest chance, subject to version and edition differences.
- The compass points to your latest death only when you are in that death’s dimension.
- A spinning needle means there is no usable target in your current state, commonly because you have not died or are in the wrong dimension.
- Another death changes the target, and with
keepInventorydisabled the compass itself can drop at the new death site.
