If the problem is multi-second stalls or a launch error such as ERR_GFX_INIT or ERR_GFX_STATE, use the corresponding troubleshooting steps instead of treating it as ordinary low frame rate. Rockstar says each setting’s effect depends on the system configuration.
Establish a baseline before changing settings
For a quick first adjustment, use the in-game graphics quality slider. To check the balance between image quality and performance more deliberately, open Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test. Run the benchmark before and after a change, keeping the rest of the configuration the same where practical.

Change one setting—or a small, clearly identifiable group—between runs. That makes it easier to tell whether the change helped on your PC. Rockstar’s graphics tuning guidance, last updated April 30, 2024, cautions: “Depending on system configuration, different settings will have different impacts on game performance.” Its article recommends the built-in benchmark but does not publish setting-by-setting FPS gains, so there is no official universal FPS estimate or best preset to promise.

Which graphics settings should you test first?
For detailed customization, Rockstar identifies these settings as the first ones to experiment with:

- MSAA (Multisampling Anti-Aliasing): test its effect on your own balance of image quality and performance.

- Near Volumetric Resolution
After those, Rockstar lists additional options to test: TAA, texture quality, lighting quality, shadow quality, screen-space ambient occlusion, anisotropic filtering, far shadow quality, tessellation, FXAA, volumetric lighting quality, triple buffering, global illumination, particle quality, mirror quality, and far volumetric resolution. Treat these as candidates for controlled testing, not a ranked list of guaranteed performance gains. The same benchmark-and-compare approach applies.
If the game stutters or stalls for several seconds
Several-second stalls are a different symptom from a consistently low average frame rate. Rockstar’s support guidance for stuttering or stalling, last updated May 2, 2024, identifies certain NVIDIA graphics drivers as a known context for significant stalls on systems with 4-core and 6-core CPUs. It does not establish that this is the cause of every stutter.

- Update your graphics driver to a current version.
- Remove any custom launch arguments for the game in Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic Games Launcher, then test again.
If stalls continue, these steps do not diagnose every possible cause; avoid assuming a graphics setting or API switch will resolve all stuttering.

Use this path if the game fails to launch with ERR_GFX_INIT. Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_INIT instructions, last updated June 12, 2024, list driver updates, a settings-folder cleanup, and an API change as possible remedies.

- Update your graphics driver.
- Open the game’s Settings folder and delete its files except system.xml.
- If the error remains, change the graphics API between Vulkan and DirectX 12 by editing system.xml. After changing the API, remove any files beginning with sga_ if they are present.
Make these file changes only for this launch error and follow Rockstar’s linked instructions for locating the relevant folder and editing the configuration file. Switching APIs here is a troubleshooting test; it does not show that Vulkan or DirectX 12 is universally faster.
Fix ERR_GFX_STATE at launch
For ERR_GFX_STATE appearing at launch, Rockstar’s error-specific instructions, last updated May 2, 2024, recommend a separate sequence:

- Switch the graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX 12.
- If the error persists, disable fullscreen optimization for the game executable through its Windows Compatibility tab.
Rockstar provides launcher-specific navigation for Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, and Epic Games in the support article. Use the instructions for the launcher and executable you have; do not apply the ERR_GFX_INIT folder cleanup as a general performance tweak.
