Red Dead Redemption 2 received strongly favorable reviews across the sources covered here, but there is no single universal score: critic aggregates are platform- and review-pool-specific, while Steam’s rating reflects PC players’ reviews. If you’re deciding whether to play, the useful question is whether its story-led open world and deliberate pace appeal to you—and which platform version you’re considering.

These figures should not be collapsed into one score. Metacritic’s number is for the PC critic listing, VideoGamesCritic tracks a different pool, and Steam reports user sentiment rather than a critics’ verdict. None of these figures establishes a matching score for every console version.

What the reviews can—and cannot—tell you
The broad signal is favorable
The PC critic listing and the separate review aggregation both report high scores, and Steam’s snapshot shows a strong positive response from PC users. Together, they indicate a broadly enthusiastic reception in these particular measures, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy the game.
PlayStation’s product listing says the game is “Winner of over 175 Game of the Year Awards and recipient of over 250 perfect scores.” Those are promotional claims printed on the store page, rather than an independently audited award tally.

Fit depends on what you want to play
The useful decision is less about whether a score is high and more about whether a story-led open world and deliberate pace sound appealing to you. The aggregate ratings do not settle whether the pacing, controls, or realism will suit an individual player; use the scores as evidence of reception, not as a personal-fit test.
Which version did reviewers assess?
Red Dead Redemption 2 launched first for PS4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018. Rockstar’s PC launch announcement set the PC release for November 5, 2019. The Metacritic figure above is specifically for PC, so it should not be presented as a platform-neutral review score.

When comparing a score or reading an individual review, check which version it covers. Platform, release timing, the number and composition of reviews, and whether the measure is critic or user feedback all affect what the number represents.
Where to check the platform listing
PS4 and PS5 play
The PlayStation Store listing is for the Standard Edition on PS4. It notes that playing on PS5 may require a system software update. The listing does not establish a native PS5 edition, so check its current platform details before purchasing.

The Steam product page identifies the PC version. Its user-review label and figures are separate from critic aggregates and may change over time.

Take-Two’s 2019 PC-release announcement described graphical and technical enhancements for that release. It also reported approximately 25 million copies sold-in worldwide for the console release at that time; this is a historical company figure, not a current sales total.

The PC release followed the console launch by more than a year, and later platform-specific listings describe different audiences and review pools. For a purchasing decision, use a review score only after confirming its platform and measure, then consult the store page for the edition and compatibility that apply to you.
