Pokémon Legends: Z-A replaces the series’ traditional turn-based battles with real-time combat, where Trainers and Pokémon move during fights and Pokémon use moves when commanded. Its three partner Pokémon are Chikorita, Tepig and Totodile. The trailers that introduced these details are from 2025; the game launched on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on October 16, 2025.
What changed in Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s battle system?
In earlier Pokémon video game series titles, Pokémon’s actions were turn-based. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Trainers and their Pokémon move around in real time, and Pokémon unleash moves at their Trainer’s command. The Pokémon Company International describes real-time Pokémon battles as a first for the series.

This changes what players need to consider in a fight. Timing matters when switching Pokémon or selecting a move, and moves differ in reach, area of effect and the time they take to execute. Positioning and when an action lands are therefore part of the battle, rather than decisions made only between turns. The official gameplay guide explains the system.

Where is the game set, and what do you do there?
The story takes place in Lumiose City, where an urban redevelopment plan aims to create a place for people and Pokémon. Wild zones let players battle and catch Pokémon. At night, battle zones appear and the Z-A Royale begins at Rank Z, with players working toward Rank A by winning battles.
Rank #2
- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
To enter promotion matches, players need a Challenger’s Ticket. They earn Ticket Points by defeating Trainers in battle zones, which can be used to obtain the ticket. The official gameplay guide describes these activities and progression.

The game launched October 16, 2025, in Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition versions. The official game hub currently labels it “Available Now!” and lists a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Mega Dimension bundle for October 29, 2026. Because that date is still ahead as of October 8, 2026, the bundle’s announced date should not be mistaken for an already released product; check the official game hub for its status after that date.
If choosing a listing, check whether it is for the Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Switch owners considering an upgrade should verify the current upgrade-pack availability and terms through official Nintendo or Pokémon channels.
