Red Dead Redemption 2 does not have a published, official dedicated-server RAM or CPU specification. Rockstar Games publishes hardware requirements for the Windows PC game client: 8 GB of memory at minimum, 12 GB recommended, and specific processor and graphics targets. Those figures describe the computer running the game, not a server that hosts other players.
If you are trying to play Red Dead Online, the relevant guidance is the PC requirement table and Rockstar’s connection troubleshooting targets. If you want a private group session, use the built-in Invite Only Session option. Rockstar’s roleplay policy permits RP servers through its Creator Platform under stated rules, but it does not provide a standard RDR2 dedicated-server build or confirm that ordinary players can rent one.

What “server requirements” means in Red Dead Redemption 2
The phrase can describe three different tasks, and each has a different answer:
- Running the PC game: You need the client hardware listed by Rockstar Games Customer Support.
- Connecting to Red Dead Online: You need an internet connection, a Rockstar Games account and a network that can communicate through the ports Rockstar lists for troubleshooting.
- Hosting a dedicated or roleplay server: Rockstar’s published material reviewed for this topic does not give a RAM, CPU, player-capacity or operating-system recipe.
Do not convert the client’s 8 GB minimum or 12 GB recommendation into a server-sizing rule. A machine with 12 GB of RAM may meet the recommended game requirement and still have no supported way to act as a general-purpose RDR2 server.

Rockstar’s official PC requirements
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s “Red Dead Redemption 2 PC system requirements” page, last updated April 30, 2024, lists the following specifications for the Windows PC product. The same storage figure applies to both tiers.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 12 GB RAM |
| Graphics | Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 with 2 GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 with 3 GB | Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 480 with 4 GB |
| Storage | 150 GB | 150 GB |
These are requirements for launching and playing the PC game, not for a headless host. Rockstar also notes that online play requires an internet connection and a Rockstar Games account. Downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements over time, so treat the April 2024 table as the published baseline rather than a permanent guarantee.
Steam’s Red Dead Redemption 2 listing independently shows 8 GB of RAM in its PC requirements. That listing is useful product context; Rockstar’s support page is the primary source for the complete minimum and recommended table above.

A game client renders the world, runs local graphics workloads and handles the player’s input. A dedicated server, when a game supports one, usually performs authoritative simulation, connection management, persistence and synchronization for multiple clients. Its resource profile depends on server software, world simulation, player count, scripts, database activity and operating-system overhead.

Rockstar’s PC page does not identify a downloadable RDR2 server executable, a supported headless mode, a maximum player count, CPU-core guidance, bandwidth per player, RAM allocation or server operating-system support. Consequently, there is no evidence-based “8 GB minimum server” or “i7 recommended server” answer to publish. The only defensible hardware figures are the client requirements in the table.
Buying a machine solely because it matches the game’s recommended 12 GB of RAM would therefore be a guess. It could run the client, but the published material does not establish that it can host a persistent world or accept inbound player connections as a dedicated server.
What Rockstar documents about hosting
Rockstar’s roleplay policy, last updated September 15, 2026, states: “Rockstar Games allows RP Servers through our Creator Platform, provided they follow our policies and guidelines at the links below:” The policy points to Rockstar’s Terms of Service, Creator Platform License Agreement and Mod Guidelines.

This is permission and policy context, not a technical deployment guide. It does not state how much RAM or CPU an RP server needs, whether a third-party rental service is supported, how many players a server may host, or which operating system should be used. Before operating an RP project, read the current policy documents and verify that the specific software and activity comply with them. Do not represent policy permission as proof of a standard dedicated-server product for the ordinary game.

Network requirements for playing and troubleshooting
Rockstar’s “Red Dead Online PC Connection Troubleshooting” page, last updated July 1, 2025, gives connection targets and port guidance. These figures are troubleshooting references for the PC client, not universal hosting specifications:
| Network item | Rockstar’s stated guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Download speed | 7.5 Mbps | A target cited for connection troubleshooting, not a per-player server bandwidth allocation. |
| Upload speed | 1 Mbps recommended; 0.5 Mbps minimum | Client connection guidance; it does not size an upload pipe for a hosted server. |
| UDP ports | 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457 and 61458 | Ports Rockstar asks users to check when diagnosing PC connectivity. |
| Connection medium | Try wired connectivity when wireless problems persist | A troubleshooting step, not a promise that Ethernet fixes every fault. |
A separate Rockstar error-code page for error 0x10001023, last updated September 18, 2025, repeats the same UDP port list. Port forwarding or firewall changes should be made only when appropriate for your network and should follow your router and security software’s documentation. Opening ports cannot fix a service outage, account problem or unsupported server arrangement.
How to start a private Invite Only Session
If your goal is simply to play with selected friends without joining a public session, Rockstar documents an Invite Only Session. This uses Rockstar’s online service; it is not a server that you install or administer.

Rockstar’s “Accessing a new Invite Only Session” page was last updated May 26, 2026. The path may be relabeled in a future update, but the documented flow begins in Story Mode. Because the session is a private online instance rather than a player-run dedicated host, it does not create a separate RAM or CPU requirement for you to calculate.

Which requirement applies to your situation?
You only need to play on PC
Use the minimum and recommended client table. Check Windows 10 64-bit compatibility, install 150 GB of available storage and compare your processor, memory and graphics card with the corresponding tier. The recommended row is a performance target, not a server specification.
You are getting connection errors
Keep the client hardware separate from the network diagnosis. Confirm that your internet connection is working, review the 7.5 Mbps download and upload guidance, check the listed UDP ports in your firewall or router where relevant, and try Ethernet if Wi-Fi remains unreliable. Record the exact error code and use Rockstar’s error-specific instructions; the 0x10001023 page is one example that repeats the port list.
You want a private session for friends
Use Invite Only Session from Story Mode. This is the supported, documented way to create a private session without claiming that you are running a dedicated server.

Start with the Creator Platform policy and its linked Terms of Service, Creator Platform License Agreement and Mod Guidelines. The policy allows RP servers subject to those rules, but it does not answer hardware, hosting-provider or capacity questions. Obtain technical specifications from the particular Creator Platform software you intend to use rather than borrowing RDR2’s client requirements. If your project runs on RedM, Godlike.Host offers RedM server hosting with a game panel, free DDoS protection and support by live chat or ticket; see the current plans. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized RedM hosts (redm.net, 10 Oct 2026).
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling 8 GB the minimum server RAM: 8 GB is Rockstar’s minimum PC-client memory figure.
- Calling the recommended CPUs server CPUs: The Core i7-4770K and Ryzen 5 1500X are recommended client processors in the April 30, 2024 table.
- Treating 7.5 Mbps as server bandwidth: Rockstar presents it as a connection-troubleshooting target, not a hosting formula.
- Assuming Invite Only means self-hosted: The feature creates a private online session through Rockstar’s service.
- Assuming RP policy supplies deployment instructions: The September 15, 2026 policy establishes permission subject to rules, not RAM, CPU or player-capacity limits.
- Opening every listed port automatically: Port guidance is for troubleshooting. Apply changes carefully and do not expose services unnecessarily.
What is established—and what remains unknown
The established figures are the Windows PC client requirements, the online-account prerequisite, Rockstar’s connection targets and UDP port list, and the documented Invite Only path. Those facts support buying or troubleshooting a game PC and setting up a private session.
Rockstar’s cited pages do not establish a dedicated-server hardware matrix, a supported general-purpose server binary, hosting prices, a player-count formula, required server-side graphics hardware, or a guaranteed third-party hosting route. Any article or sales page that supplies those numbers is making claims beyond the specifications covered here unless it cites separate, current documentation for a particular Creator Platform implementation.
Bottom line
For Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC, plan around 8 GB RAM and the Core i5-2500K/FX-6300 class at minimum, or 12 GB and the Core i7-4770K/Ryzen 5 1500X class as Rockstar’s recommended tier, with the listed graphics cards and 150 GB storage. For online access, use Rockstar’s network guidance and account requirement. For a private group, choose Invite Only Session. For RP servers, follow the Creator Platform policies and obtain technical requirements from the specific platform; Rockstar has not published a universal dedicated-server RAM or CPU specification.
