For a specific error, follow Rockstar’s advice for that exact code rather than treating every crash the same. These are troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed fix.
Before changing settings, note whether the game fails to launch, crashes during play, or displays an error code. Record the exact wording and code; that information helps you choose the relevant steps and explain the problem to support.
1. Update and restart the Steam Deck

Install any available Steam Deck system updates, then restart the Deck. Steam recommends updates and a restart as first steps for software instability. See the Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide.

If the crash continues, close or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, restart again, and try the game. This checks whether another application is interfering; it does not establish that a particular app is the cause.

2. Check the game’s compatibility settings
For a Steam-installed copy, open the game in your Library, press the Menu button, and go to Properties > Compatibility. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then try the latest Proton option available in the list. Steam gives this as general guidance for instability with Steam apps; it is not a confirmed fix specific to this game.
If the game launches but crashes or performs poorly during play, Steam also suggests trying lower graphics settings. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affects the crash.

3. Match the steps to the error or crash
Error code 25d11006
Rockstar identifies error 25d11006 as “Rockstar Games SDK failed to initialize” and recommends verifying the game files. Follow the Steam file-verification guidance for a Steam installation, linked from Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption Error Code 25d11006 article. That recommendation applies to this named error, not to every crash.
Rockstar’s “exited unexpectedly” errors
If your crash matches an error listed in Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption exited unexpectedly guidance, close the RivaTuner overlay and verify the game files. Rockstar describes the overlay as a possible source of common issues; this is general game guidance, not a Steam Deck-specific diagnosis. If the problem continues after those steps, Rockstar asks you to submit a support ticket with the newest launcher.log.

No matching error code
Do not apply a fix for a different code just because the symptom looks similar. Continue with the Deck update, restart, and compatibility checks above, then record the crash point and any message shown. That information will help support distinguish a launch failure from a crash during play.
4. Check the live compatibility listing
Valve’s Deck Verified system uses compatibility categories and considers factors such as operation at the Deck’s default resolution, suitable default settings, legible text, and support for the game and its middleware under Proton when Proton is used. For a Playable or Unsupported listing, Steam advises checking the Store page’s compatibility section for requirements that are not met. Read Valve’s Steam Deck Verified guide and check the live Store listing for this game before relying on a current rating or its notes; the rating is not established here.

5. Contact the right support team
Use the symptom you recorded to choose where to escalate:
- Deck-only hardware or performance issue: Rockstar directs players to Steam Deck troubleshooting and Steam Support for issues limited to the Deck.
- Rockstar game listed as Verified: Rockstar’s Deck support guidance says to contact Rockstar Support for a Rockstar game that is listed as Verified. Confirm the current Store listing first.
- Steam copy of the game: Steam’s Red Dead Redemption gameplay or technical issue page lists Rockstar as the game’s official support contact.
Rockstar’s Steam Deck support article was last updated March 8, 2024; its 25d11006 article was last updated November 1, 2024, and its unexpected-exit article was last updated December 13, 2024.
