The M4 and M5 iPad Pro are currently the best Apple devices for Red Dead Redemption on mobile. Reported testing places them in a 60-fps Performance mode class, while the iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro and 17 Pro families target 40 fps. Fidelity mode is capped at 30 fps. That makes the iPad Pro the best choice for frame rate and screen size, but not necessarily the best value or most portable option.
This applies to Rockstar’s native iPhone and iPad version, which includes the complete single-player campaign, Undead Nightmare and bonus content associated with the Game of the Year Edition.

The decisive advantage is the reported 60-fps Performance mode. A test of the M4 iPad Pro found stable 60-fps output with smooth frame pacing and no visible micro-stutter during the test. The M5 iPad Pro is also reported to belong to this 60-fps class.

That matters most when riding, aiming, turning the camera and fighting. The higher refresh rate makes movement easier to follow than a 30-fps presentation, even though it does not change the game’s underlying content.
There is an important image-quality qualification. The testing suggested that the game renders internally below the iPad’s full output resolution, meaning that 60-fps Performance mode may use resolution scaling or upscaling. “60 fps” therefore does not mean native full-resolution rendering at every moment. Fidelity mode may look cleaner in static scenes, but it is capped at 30 fps.
The large iPad Pro display is also a better fit for a long open-world game than an iPhone screen, particularly when using a physical controller. The trade-off is price, weight and portability: buying an iPad Pro solely for this game is difficult to justify unless 60 fps and a large screen are priorities.

M4 iPad Pro versus M5 iPad Pro
For Red Dead Redemption, the M4 and M5 iPad Pro should be treated as the same performance tier. Both are reported to support 60-fps Performance mode, and no available evidence establishes a frame rate above 60 fps or a major game-specific image-quality advantage for M5.
Apple says the M5 offers up to 1.6 times the GPU performance of M4 in certain demanding workloads. That is a general platform claim, not a Red Dead Redemption benchmark. If you are buying a new iPad for several demanding uses, M5 is the newest option. If the game is the main reason for buying, a discounted or refurbished M4 iPad Pro is likely the more rational choice.

The best iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro or newer Pro models
The iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro and 17 Pro families are the strongest phone options in the available testing. Their Performance mode is reported to target 40 fps, while Fidelity mode runs at 30 fps.
That makes a recent Pro iPhone a strong portable alternative, especially if you already own one. It is easier to carry than an iPad and avoids the cost of buying another device. However, it does not reach the reported 60-fps class of the M4 and M5 iPad Pro, and its smaller display is less comfortable for extended sessions.
The iPhone 17 Pro is the logical current model for someone buying new, but the evidence does not show a fundamentally higher frame-rate category than the iPhone 15 Pro or 16 Pro. Exact battery drain, surface temperature and long-session throttling should not be assumed without controlled testing.
The A17 Pro iPad mini warning
The A17 Pro iPad mini demonstrates why chip branding alone is not enough. Reported testing places it at 30 fps even though the iPhone 15 Pro uses the A17 Pro family and can target 40 fps.
The likely explanation is the GPU configuration: the iPad mini has a five-core GPU, compared with six GPU cores in the iPhone 15 Pro. That is a performance analysis rather than a formally documented explanation from Rockstar. Thermal design, display hardware and device-specific tuning can also affect results.

The iPad mini remains attractive if compact tablet portability is your priority. Do not buy it expecting the highest frame rate, however.

Rockstar’s official support page requires an iPhone with an A13 Bionic chip or newer, or an iPad with an M-series chip, alongside iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 and later. Rockstar’s published list also includes several older non-M iPads, so “M-series iPad required” is not a complete compatibility summary.

Check your exact hardware at Settings → General → About → Model Name. Rockstar’s official device-support page is the authority if the list changes.
How to select Fidelity or Performance mode
- Open Red Dead Redemption.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Graphics.
- Select Fidelity or Performance, when the option is available.
Do not assume that every supported device exposes both choices or offers the same frame-rate target. Official compatibility means the game can run; it does not guarantee 40 or 60 fps.
Touch controls, controllers and displays
The mobile release includes touch controls and landscape play, but the supplied evidence does not provide a systematic comparison of touch input with a physical controller. Camera control while riding, aiming, Dead Eye activation and button placement are the areas most likely to determine whether touch controls suit you.

For long sessions, a physical controller is the safer recommendation. Bluetooth console controllers, USB-C controllers and clip-on mobile controllers are all relevant categories. A phone may need a separate clamp, while an iPad can sit on a stand. Compatibility, latency and behavior can differ between the paid App Store edition and the Netflix edition, so do not treat every controller as universally guaranteed.
External displays and AirPlay may introduce latency, scaling artifacts, black bars or refresh-rate limitations. The available evidence does not establish a consistent external-display result.

You do not need Netflix to play the game. Rockstar distributes the mobile release in two ways:
- Standalone App Store edition: The US App Store listing shows a $39.99 price and a listed size of 3 GB. It includes Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare.
- Netflix edition: Available through the Netflix mobile app to eligible Netflix members.
The standalone version suits players who want access independent of a subscription. Netflix is more attractive if you already subscribe and want to try the game without buying it separately. Prices and availability vary by region and can change. The listing’s 3 GB figure is a download listing, not a guarantee that only 3 GB of free space is needed: unpacking, updates, saves and temporary installation files can require more.

If installation fails, free substantially more space than the nominal listing size, update iOS or iPadOS, restart the device and retry. App Store reviews can reveal installation, Bluetooth and display problems, but they are anecdotal and are not benchmark evidence.

Buying advice
Buy or use an M4 iPad Pro if
- You want the best reported Apple frame rate.
- You prefer a large screen and physical-controller play.
- You can find an M4 model at a meaningful discount or already own one.
Choose an M5 iPad Pro if
- You want the current premium iPad Pro for more than this game.
- You value newer hardware and are not upgrading from an M4 solely for Red Dead Redemption.
Use an iPhone 15 Pro or newer Pro model if
- Portability matters more than 60 fps.
- You already own a supported Pro iPhone.
- You want the best phone-class experience without buying a tablet.
Do not buy an iPad mini or non-Pro iPad solely for 60 fps
Supported non-Pro iPads can run the game, but the evidence does not show that every M-series iPad or every supported iPad receives the iPad Pro’s 60-fps mode. The iPad mini’s reported 30-fps result makes it particularly unsuitable if frame rate is your deciding factor.
Final verdict
Best overall: M4 or M5 iPad Pro, based on reported 60-fps Performance mode and the larger display.
Best value: A discounted or already-owned M4 iPad Pro, provided you want a premium tablet beyond this game.

The central distinction is between “supported” and “runs best.” Many Apple devices can play Red Dead Redemption, but the current performance evidence puts the M4 and M5 iPad Pro alone at the top of the Apple mobile ranking for frame rate.
