Red Echoes: Berlin is a political strategy game from Morningrise Games, set in Berlin during the German Revolution of 1918–1919. Its demo is on Steam now, and the full game is planned for Q1 2027 but is not yet available.

What the setting actually covers

The game does not sit in the fighting of 1914–1918. It begins after the war’s end was already in motion. Germany signed the armistice on November 11, 1918, and the revolution that followed brought down the monarchy and pushed the country toward a new republic. The game’s title and Steam description tie it to Berlin in 1918, while the PC Gamer preview frames its centre of gravity around the Spartacist uprising of January 1919.

That distinction matters for how you read the premise. The broader revolution started in 1918. The Spartacist uprising, the armed revolt in Berlin that the game foregrounds, belongs to January 1919. Red Echoes: Berlin spans that whole stretch of unrest rather than a single week of street fighting.

Who you play

You do not play as a famous leader. The official Steam description states the premise directly: “Take control of the story of three fictional characters, each from a different section of society, and attempt to support the brewing socialist uprising in Germany and bring about real change.”

Historical figures are present, including Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, but they belong to the wider cast. Steam lists the protagonists as fictional, so Luxemburg and Liebknecht are not characters you direct. For a reader interested in the revolution from below, this is the most distinctive design choice: the three people you move are ordinary participants whose stakes come from their class position rather than from command of the movement.

How the game plays

According to PC Gamer’s hands-on preview by Joshua Wolens, the demo blends visual novel storytelling with board-game-style turn strategy. The core loop works like this:

  • Positioning: you move three characters around a map, one of the game’s central systems.
  • Abilities: each character has different abilities that affect the map’s political pressures.
  • Political meters: the preview names revolutionary fervor, reactionary zeal, and pressure as the forces you manage.
  • Story consequences: narrative decisions can change the board, and some choices trade a short-term compromise for a hoped-for longer-term gain.

The preview also describes the map’s Weimar-era graphic-design look, which shifts as red revolutionary sentiment and yellow reactionary sentiment spread across the city. These are the reviewer’s impressions of the demo, not a measured or independently tested account of the full game’s systems.

Can you play it now?

Two Steam pages matter here, and they describe different things. The demo is playable today; the full game is still ahead.

What the early reaction says

The PC Gamer preview calls the early demo relatively forgiving and praises its writing. Those are the reviewer’s subjective judgments from playing the demo. They are not a consensus view, and they do not tell you how the later chapters will balance difficulty.

Reading alongside the game

If the 1918–19 setting is the draw, a useful companion is the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung’s chronicle, Rosa Luxemburg in the German Revolution: A Chronicle. It documents the revolutionary context and Luxemburg’s role, which gives you a factual baseline for the historical names that appear in the game’s wider cast.

Who this game is likely for

  • Players who want a political story told through ordinary people, not monarchs or generals.
  • Readers who enjoy turn-based positioning combined with narrative choices.
  • Anyone who wants to try the demo now and wait for the full release before committing.
  • Those looking for a long campaign should note the three-to-four-hour estimate before expecting one.
