The safest repair is to identify that Autodesk program and repair or reinstall it, not to copy a replacement DLL into a Windows system folder.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program starts immediately before the error: AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Land Desktop, an Autodesk utility, or a shortcut for an older product.
- When the error appears: at Windows sign-in, when opening a DWG file, after an update, or only from one shortcut.
- What changed first: an uninstall, disk cleanup, antivirus quarantine, failed update, backup restoration, or damaged storage.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit: press Windows key + I, select System, then About, and check System type.
- The exact wording: “was not found,” “is missing or corrupted,” or “Error loading regacadres.dll.”
regacadres.dll is described in public file metadata as “RegAcadRes resource DLL” and is associated with Autodesk Inc. RegAcadres. Evidence places similarly named files in older AutoCAD-family installations, including legacy Civil 3D and Land Desktop distributions, but there is no definitive public Autodesk manifest proving one exact product release for every copy.

Fix 1: Repair the affected Autodesk installation
This is the best first step when the Autodesk product is still listed in Windows.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - In Programs and Features, locate the Autodesk product that produces the error.
- Select it and choose Uninstall/Change.
- If the Autodesk maintenance window appears, select Repair.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows when requested.
- Start the Autodesk program from its normal shortcut.
A successful repair should let the application open without the missing-file message. It should also restore other original application files and registry information that may have been damaged.

If Repair fails, repeat steps 1 through 5 and choose Reinstall instead. Reinstalling restores the original product files rather than only checking the existing installation.
If the Autodesk product uses the newer installer
Some Autodesk products do not provide a separate Repair button.
- Back up your Autodesk templates, custom profiles, plug-ins, scripts, and work files.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to your Autodesk account at
manage.autodesk.com. - Open All Products and Services.
- Select the exact product, release, operating system, and language.
- Download the official installer and run it.
- Restart Windows and test the program using its official shortcut.
If the product is old and is not available in your Autodesk account, use the original licensed installation media or contact Autodesk support. Do not replace it with a DLL taken from another release.
Fix 2: Identify the Autodesk program that owns the file
The product may not appear under an obvious modern name. regacadres.dll appears to be associated with older AutoCAD-related software, but the exact owner depends on the installation.
Check these locations:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Autodesk, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Land Desktop, or a related vertical product.
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features and check there as well.
- Right-click the shortcut that triggers the error and select Properties.
- Read the Target field to identify the executable and its installation folder.
- In File Explorer, inspect the folder containing that executable.
- Check Settings → Apps → Default apps if the error appears when opening a DWG or another Autodesk-associated file.
If a damaged shortcut or file association launches an obsolete executable, repair the Autodesk installation first. If the old product has already been removed, remove the stale shortcut or association rather than downloading its missing DLL.
A file named regacadRes.dll in an old AutoCAD-family installation is useful evidence, but it does not establish that every AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or Land Desktop release uses the same file. Restore the file from the exact product, release, and language that originally installed it.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine an Autodesk file. Check this before manually restoring anything.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent actions and look for an item from the Autodesk installation folder.
- Expand the detection to view its path and details.
- If the file clearly came from a legitimate Autodesk installation, verify the product and action before choosing Restore.
- Run a new scan and start the Autodesk application.

Restoring a quarantined file is not always the best repair. If the file is detected again, leave it quarantined and reinstall the Autodesk product from its official installer. A clean reinstall restores the complete set of files and avoids carrying forward a damaged or altered copy.

If several unrelated DLLs have disappeared, run a full Windows Security scan and investigate possible malware, disk errors, or filesystem damage instead of restoring files one by one.
Fix 4: Reinstall the exact Autodesk product
Use a full reinstall when:
- Repair reports that it cannot complete.
- The product is no longer listed correctly.
- The installation folder is mostly empty.
- The error began after an interrupted update or failed uninstall.
- The file was deleted during disk cleanup.
- The application starts only from an old shortcut or file association.
Before uninstalling, copy your Autodesk settings, templates, custom tool palettes, plug-ins, profiles, and project files to a safe location.

- Remove only leftover folders that clearly belong to that product, and do not delete shared Autodesk data unless Autodesk’s instructions specifically require it.
- Download the matching installer through your Autodesk account or use original licensed media.
- Install the same product release and language.
- Apply available updates for that product.
- Start the application from its newly installed shortcut.
A reinstall is more reliable than copying one DLL because the error may also involve a missing executable, damaged resource library, registry entry, shortcut, file association, or plug-in.
Fix 5: Do not copy regacadres.dll into System32 or SysWOW64
Do not use System32 or SysWOW64 as a general-purpose DLL repair location.
A third-party Autodesk resource DLL normally belongs beside the Autodesk executable that loads it. Copying it into a Windows folder can:
- Put the wrong release on the system search path.
- Mix a 32-bit file with a 64-bit application, or the reverse.
- Leave the Autodesk installation incomplete.
- Cause a different application to load the wrong file.
- Hide the underlying damaged installation.
The same warning applies to copying the file into both folders. System32 and SysWOW64 are not interchangeable storage locations.
Public file-index records disagree about the file’s reported version and architecture. Some records describe a 32-bit file, while another listing reports x64-related information. These third-party records should not be treated as universal specifications. The correct architecture is the one supplied with the exact Autodesk program.
A 32-bit legacy Autodesk application generally needs its own matching 32-bit resource files even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this resource DLL
regsvr32 is not a generic missing-DLL repair command.

A resource DLL such as regacadres.dll is not normally a self-registering component. It generally does not provide the registration entry point that regsvr32 expects. Running a command such as this is therefore unlikely to help:

regsvr32 regacadres.dll
Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a utility for registering DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; see the Microsoft regsvr32 documentation.
If the command reports that the module could not be loaded or that an entry point is missing, remove the copied file if you placed it manually and repair the Autodesk installation instead.
Fix 7: Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET just for this error
regacadres.dll is identified as an Autodesk application resource file, not as a Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, Windows system file, or device driver.
Installing Visual C++ Redistributable packages, DirectX, or .NET may be appropriate when a separate error explicitly names one of those components. It is not the direct fix for a missing regacadres.dll.
Likewise, Windows Features will not normally recreate it. You can check optional components if another application specifically requires them:
- Open Settings → Apps → Optional features.
- Select More Windows features.
- Review the feature named in the separate application’s documentation.
- Do not enable random features in an attempt to replace
regacadres.dll.
The Autodesk installer is the component that should restore this file.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Because this is not a Windows-protected system file, SFC and DISM are secondary checks. Use them when several unrelated applications report missing system files, Windows updates fail, or other signs point to component-store corruption.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the Autodesk application.

Microsoft documents DISM in its Windows image repair guidance and SFC in its System File Checker documentation.
These commands repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They will not normally recreate a missing third-party Autodesk DLL. If both commands complete successfully but the error remains, return to Autodesk repair or reinstall.
When manually running SFC and DISM becomes repetitive and you are unsure which Windows component is damaged, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; its repair functions require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected Autodesk program remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 9: Check drivers only when the wider problem points to them
A graphics or device-driver problem is not the usual cause of a missing Autodesk resource DLL. Do not install a driver merely because regacadres.dll is missing.
Consider a driver check if:
- Autodesk crashes with display-related errors as well as the DLL message.
- The problem began immediately after a graphics-driver update.
- Other graphics applications also fail.
- Device Manager shows a warning icon.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and any device category related to the error.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab to check the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver obtained from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and test Autodesk.
Do not expect Device Manager to restore regacadres.dll. It manages hardware drivers, while this file belongs to an Autodesk application.
If checking every hardware maker’s site and comparing driver versions is the time-consuming part, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its driver installation features require the full version. System Restore can help when the error began immediately after a known installation, update, or cleanup and a suitable restore point exists. It is not a substitute for repairing Autodesk.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.

If a different resource DLL is named
If the message names acadres.dll, acadltres.dll, acui23res.dll, or another file instead, follow the same general approach but do not assume it is interchangeable with regacadres.dll.

- Start the Autodesk program from its official shortcut.
- Temporarily disable third-party plug-ins.
- Check whether the DWG or other file association points to the intended Autodesk release.
- Repair or reinstall that exact product.
- Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, opening Windows Logs → Application, and reviewing the error recorded at the launch time.
A damaged shortcut, file association, or add-in can produce a resource-DLL message even when the file itself exists. Autodesk has documented this pattern for related AutoCAD resource DLL failures.

When none of the fixes works
Collect the following before contacting Autodesk support:
- The exact error text.
- The Autodesk product name and release.
- Whether the error appears from a shortcut, a file association, or inside another program.
- The full path shown for the executable.
- Whether repair or reinstall completed successfully.
- Any Windows Security quarantine result.
- The related Application Error entry from Event Viewer.
- Whether disabling plug-ins changed the behavior.
If the file continues to disappear after a clean reinstall, scan for malware and check the disk or filesystem. If only one shortcut fails, recreate the shortcut from the installed Autodesk program rather than copying a DLL elsewhere.

Public third-party metadata conflicts. Do not rely on a generic architecture label. Restore the copy supplied with the exact Autodesk product and release. A 32-bit legacy application generally requires matching 32-bit application files.
Should I download regacadres.dll from a DLL website?
No. An unofficial copy may contain malware, belong to a different Autodesk release, use the wrong architecture, or fail to repair the damaged installation. Use Autodesk Account, original licensed media, or Autodesk support.
