Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the right starting point:
- The file is missing from
C:WindowsSystem32: run DISM, then System File Checker. - The error began after Windows Update or a failed repair: install pending updates, then repeat DISM and SFC.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history and scan the computer before restoring anything.
- The file exists, but an application still reports “specified module could not be found”: check the application, its dependencies, and the full error path.
- Only one old program shows the error: repair or reinstall that program after repairing Windows.
- The problem started after a driver or system change: use System Restore, then check relevant drivers through Device Manager.
- SFC cannot repair the file: run DISM first, use a matching repair source if required, or perform an in-place Windows repair.
- You are considering
regsvr32: do not use it forwshirda.dll. It is not a general DLL repair command.
What is wshirda.dll?
wshirda.dll is described as Windows Sockets Helper DLL. It is published by Microsoft and forms part of the Microsoft Windows operating system.
The name is associated with the Windows Sockets helper architecture and legacy IrDA infrared networking. Microsoft documents the AF_IRDA address family and the SOCKADDR_IRDA structure for Windows Sockets applications that communicate through infrared networking interfaces. The technology is old, but legacy software can still encounter the component indirectly.

This is not a Visual C++ runtime file, DirectX file, .NET component, or game-specific DLL. Installing those packages merely because an error mentions wshirda.dll is not an appropriate first repair.
On Windows installations where the file is present, the normal location is:
C:WindowsSystem32wshirda.dll
The exact file version and size depend on the Windows release and servicing level. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native system binaries, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit components. Do not copy the same DLL into both locations. Windows servicing determines which binary belongs in which location.
What the different errors mean
The wording can vary between Windows versions and applications. You may see messages such as:
- “wshirda.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because wshirda.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wshirda.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading wshirda.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “wshirda.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The file wshirda.dll is missing or corrupted.”
A missing-file message usually means Windows cannot find the DLL at the expected location. That can result from deletion, corruption, quarantine, disk problems, or damage to the Windows installation.
“Specified module could not be found” needs more care. It can mean that wshirda.dll is absent, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL or the application cannot be loaded. The message alone does not prove that wshirda.dll is the only missing file.
If the file exists and the error continues, record:

Check the file before repairing anything
1. Open the expected folder
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter:
C:WindowsSystem32
- Search for
wshirda.dll.
If it is absent, do not copy a file from another computer. Continue with the Windows repair steps below.
If it is present, right-click it and select Properties. Check the Details tab for the description and company information. A genuine file should fit the Windows installation context and should not be sitting in an unrelated downloads, temporary, or application folder.
2. Check the digital signature
In the file’s Properties window:
- Select the Digital Signatures tab, if available.
- Select the signature.
- Choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
A missing or invalid signature does not automatically prove malware, particularly on an old or damaged installation, but it is a reason to scan the system and avoid manually replacing the file.
3. Review Defender Protection history
To check whether Windows Security removed the file:

- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and expand any item related to
wshirda.dll.
Do not restore the file simply because an application needs it. First run a full scan. If the file was found in an unusual application directory rather than the Windows system directory, treat it as suspicious.
Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. If the detection is genuine, restoring it would reintroduce the problem.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the best starting point when the file is missing, corrupted, or causing errors in more than one Windows component.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC, or System File Checker, then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired source.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
- Restart Windows if DISM requests it.
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If Windows Update is damaged or unavailable, DISM may report that the source files could not be found. In that situation, use a matching Windows installation or repair source rather than downloading an individual DLL.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the application again.
Common SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file problem. Investigate the application, dependencies, malware history, or the error path.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If the result does not change, continue to the escalation steps below.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repeated repair checks by showing what its free scan identifies; repair actions are performed by the full version. It is optional, and the built-in DISM and SFC commands remain the appropriate Microsoft repair path.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates and repeat the repair
A servicing problem can prevent Windows from restoring a protected component correctly.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Repeat the DISM and SFC sequence.
If DISM repeatedly reports that source files cannot be found, use a matching repair source or move to an in-place repair installation. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from an unrelated website.
Fix 3: Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 systems, Windows Update may offer a repair reinstall that preserves apps, files, and settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the computer connected to power and restart when prompted.
This reinstalls the current Windows version and can repair component-store damage without using the more destructive reset options. If the option is not available, use installation media for a matching Windows version and choose an in-place upgrade that preserves personal files and applications.

Fix 4: Repair the application that shows the error
If Windows itself works normally and only one old program reports wshirda.dll, the application may be damaged or may have an unresolved dependency.
First complete the DISM and SFC checks. Then repair the affected application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
If there is no Repair option, uninstall and reinstall the program from its official publisher or use its official installer. If the program has a launcher with Verify, Repair, or Verify files, use that function.

Do not place wshirda.dll in the application folder unless the application’s official documentation specifically requires a Windows component there. A Windows system DLL normally belongs to Windows, not to a game or ordinary application directory.
If reinstalling the program does not help, inspect the full error. The application may be failing because another dependency is missing, not because wshirda.dll itself is absent.
Fix 5: Check for malware or a false positive
Malware can delete, modify, or replace system files. It can also use a similar filename in an application directory.
Run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
- Remove or quarantine confirmed threats.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
Pay attention to the path reported by Windows Security. A file named wshirda.dll under C:WindowsSystem32 is a different situation from a similarly named file under a temporary folder, a user profile, or an unfamiliar application directory.

Do not restore a suspicious file manually. Repair Windows after malware removal so protected files come from the operating system’s trusted source.
Fix 6: Check the disk if the file keeps disappearing
If SFC repairs the file but it disappears again, or if Windows reports repeated corruption, investigate broader storage or installation damage.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
chkdsk C: /scan
- Review the result.
- Check Event Viewer for recurring disk, NTFS, or system errors.
If Windows reports serious disk problems, back up important files before attempting extensive repairs. A failing drive can repeatedly damage restored system files.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is useful when the error began after a driver, cleanup utility, failed repair, or recently installed program.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal documents, but important files should still be backed up first.
Fix 8: Update a related driver only when hardware is involved
wshirda.dll is not normally repaired by installing a random driver. Driver updates are relevant only when the error appears alongside an old network, infrared, chipset, or other hardware component.
To check for driver problems:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the hardware named in the error or Event Viewer entry.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Prefer drivers supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer. Do not use Device Manager to replace wshirda.dll, and do not copy a DLL into a driver folder.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan identifies when checking many devices manually is impractical; driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and a driver update is not the correct fix unless a related hardware device is actually involved.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy you should not use regsvr32
Do not run:
regsvr32 wshirda.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for restoring, repairing, or registering every DLL.
Running it against a system helper DLL can produce another error without fixing the original problem. Use DISM and SFC for protected Windows files.

Why downloading wshirda.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites and manual replacement instructions. A downloaded copy can have:
- The wrong Windows build.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing or incorrect exports.
- An invalid digital signature.
- Malware or tampering.
- Dependencies that still do not match the installed system.
Copying a file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can also make servicing and later repairs less reliable.
The safe sources are Windows itself, Windows Update, a matching Microsoft installation or repair source, and an official in-place repair installation. There is no separate Microsoft redistributable intended to install wshirda.dll as an independent runtime.
FAQ
Is wshirda.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. wshirda.dll is the Windows Sockets Helper DLL from Microsoft Windows. Verify its location, file details, digital signature, and Defender history rather than trusting the filename alone.
Is it related to Winsock or infrared devices?
It is associated with the Windows Sockets helper architecture and legacy IrDA infrared socket support. An application may encounter it indirectly even if the computer does not use infrared hardware.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. There is no evidence that those redistributables install or repair wshirda.dll. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC first.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Windows system files are build- and architecture-dependent. Use Windows servicing or a matching Microsoft repair source.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
Check the application path, Event Viewer, Defender history, and the complete error message. “Specified module could not be found” may refer to a dependency rather than the named DLL.
What if SFC cannot repair it?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If DISM cannot find source files, use a matching repair source. On Windows 11, use Settings > System > Recovery > Reinstall now when available, or perform an in-place repair installation.
Is there a Windows Feature I should enable?
Usually not. wshirda.dll is an operating-system component, not a feature that should be restored by enabling random legacy components. Only enable an optional Windows feature when the affected application’s official documentation specifically requires it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need to reinstall the game?
Only if the error occurs exclusively in that game and Windows repairs do not resolve it. Repair or reinstall the game through its official launcher or publisher. Do not install a loose copy of wshirda.dll into the game folder.
Can I ignore the error if I do not use infrared?
If an old application or Windows component is requesting the file, ignoring it may prevent that software from starting. Repair the Windows component and investigate the calling application rather than trying to enable infrared manually.
What is the safest order of operations?
Check the file path and Defender history, run DISM, run SFC, install pending Windows updates, repeat the repair, and then repair the application if only one program is affected. Escalate to System Restore, a matching repair source, or an in-place Windows repair when the problem persists.
