Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, is one of Elden Ring’s most tragic figures. She is the former queen of Caria, the onetime leader of Raya Lucaria Academy, the mother of Ranni, Radahn, and Rykard, and a powerful sorcerer whose life fell apart after Radagon abandoned her. By the time the Tarnished reaches her, Rennala is less a functioning monarch than the remnant of one: a grieving scholar-queen sheltering inside the Grand Library with her amber egg and the fragile “sweetings” created by her attempts at rebirth.
Defeating her awards the Great Rune of the Unborn and the Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen. More importantly for gameplay, the encounter unlocks Rennala’s rebirth service, allowing the player to reallocate attributes with a Larval Tear and alter their appearance. Her story, boss fight, and gameplay rewards all revolve around the same idea: the desire to recover what has been lost through transformation.

Rennala is the Queen of the Full Moon, the last queen of Caria, and the former head of Raya Lucaria Academy in Liurnia of the Lakes. She is not a demigod in the same category as the shard-bearing children of Marika. Her importance comes from a different source: Carian sovereignty, mastery of glintstone sorcery, her relationship with the moon, and her marriage into the family surrounding the Golden Order.
#1 Best Overall
Her children are three major figures in the game:
- Ranni, the lunar-aligned witch whose quest leads toward the Age of Stars.
- Starscourge Radahn, the celebrated warrior who mastered gravity sorcery and held the stars in check.
- Praetor Rykard, the lord of Volcano Manor who turned against the Erdtree and embraced blasphemy.
Rennala’s family is therefore united less by a single political cause than by recurring themes: sorcery, powerful forms of self-determination, resistance to established authority, and attempts to reshape the world rather than merely survive within it.
Rennala’s rise through moon sorcery
Rennala encountered the full moon when she was a young astrologer. That meeting changed the course of her life. She became a formidable sorcerer and eventually rose to lead Raya Lucaria’s scholars, transforming the academy into the center of Liurnia’s intellectual and magical power.
The moon is not simply an attack effect in Rennala’s story. It represents an older and more distant source of knowledge than the golden authority associated with the Erdtree. Carian sorcery, astrology, the academy, and the royal family all express this lunar identity. Rennala’s later connection to Ranni makes that continuity especially clear, although the game does not establish that Rennala knowingly planned or directed every part of Ranni’s later scheme.
The Liurnian Wars and Radagon’s marriage
Raya Lucaria and the forces of the Golden Order fought during the Liurnian Wars. The conflict did not end with the total destruction of Caria or the academy. Instead, Radagon’s marriage to Rennala created a political and personal union between the Erdtree-aligned order and the moon-centered Carian tradition.
That marriage temporarily reconciled two powers that had previously been enemies. It also connected Rennala to the wider demigod family through their children. For a time, she was not merely an isolated academic ruler: she was a queen whose household joined Liurnia to the central political order of the Lands Between.
The reconciliation did not last. Radagon eventually left Rennala and became Queen Marika’s consort. His departure shattered the balance that had defined Rennala’s life. It cost her a husband, weakened her political position, and left the Carian queen emotionally and psychologically diminished.
Ranni, Radahn, and Rykard: Rennala’s children
Ranni
Ranni is the clearest continuation of Rennala’s lunar legacy. She is associated with the moon, Carian sorcery, and a future that rejects the existing order of the Erdtree. The relationship is thematic as well as familial: both mother and daughter are connected to lunar power, but Ranni pursues her own plan rather than simply repeating Rennala’s history.

The Carian royal family, Raya Lucaria, and the route toward the Moonlight Altar are closely linked in the game’s structure. That connection should not be reduced to the claim that Rennala is secretly controlling Ranni’s quest; it is better understood as a shared family and regional history that the player gradually uncovers.
Radahn
Radahn inherited a connection to sorcery but expressed it through warfare. He became a legendary general and learned gravity sorcery, allowing him to continue riding his beloved horse despite his immense size. His gravity studies also relate to the stars and to the cosmic imagery surrounding his family.
Rykard
Rykard took another path away from the Erdtree. As praetor and later lord of Volcano Manor, he became associated with rebellion, blasphemy, and the desire to overthrow the established order. His transformation is radically different from Rennala’s rebirth experiments, but both characters are linked by the refusal to accept the world as it was given to them.
The amber egg and Rennala’s failed rebirth
Radagon gave Rennala an amber egg, and it became the focus of her grief after he left. The egg is tied to the forbidden art of rebirth, which Rennala performs with the help of the Juvenile Scholars, the small figures surrounding her in the Grand Library.
Rebirth sounds like a promise of restoration: a way to create a new, perfect life and perhaps recover the happiness Rennala lost. The results are much more disturbing. The “sweetings” are fragile, malformed, and short-lived. They repeatedly crawl and sing around the library, suggesting a process that produces life without achieving health, permanence, or genuine renewal.
The game does not explain every metaphysical rule governing the egg or rebirth. It is safer to describe the egg as the vessel and focus of Rennala’s rebirth practice than to claim that it has one completely defined function. Its emotional role, however, is unmistakable: Rennala clings to an object associated with Radagon and uses it to pursue an impossible recovery.
Where to find Rennala
Rennala is located in the Grand Library of Raya Lucaria Academy in Liurnia of the Lakes. The encounter is the academy’s major boss battle and takes place in two very different stages.
Rank #3

Rennala boss fight: phase one
In the first phase, Rennala floats above the library inside a golden barrier. Juvenile Scholars maintain the protection, while the room fills with books, debris, and magical attacks.
- Search for the marked scholars. Several Juvenile Scholars are present, but the ones required for the mechanic are marked by a golden aura and are usually accompanied by a distinct singing animation.
- Attack the marked scholars. Hitting enough of them causes the golden barrier to collapse.
- Damage Rennala while she is exposed. When the barrier falls, Rennala crashes to the floor and becomes vulnerable for a limited period.
- Repeat the cycle. The scholars restore the barrier, so the player must identify and attack the marked targets again until the phase is completed.
The main mistake in this phase is treating every scholar as equally important or spending too long attacking Rennala while the barrier is active. The scholars are the actual objective. Once the barrier drops, move decisively toward Rennala and use the brief opening before returning to the mechanic.
Rennala boss fight: phase two
The second phase shifts to a large, moonlit arena. Rennala uses ranged glintstone sorcery, summons creatures, and employs powerful lunar attacks, including a large moon projectile. The scene is presented in a way that strongly suggests magical mediation or projection rather than a straightforward continuation of the library battle. The game does not spell out the arena’s exact metaphysics, so calling it definitively “just an illusion” goes further than the text requires.
Useful general principles for this phase include:
- Close the distance when possible. Rennala is a magic-oriented opponent, and staying far away gives her more opportunities to cast.
- Favor physical damage when your build allows it. A melee approach can be effective because it pressures her casting windows, while relying exclusively on sorcery can make the matchup less comfortable.
- Watch for the moon projectile. Create distance or move away from its path rather than trying to remain directly in front of it.
- Do not overcommit to summons. Rennala can call creatures into the arena, but they generally function as distractions and hazards. The primary objective remains damaging Rennala.
- Use the arena. Keep moving around the open space, avoid standing in the center of incoming spells, and punish the moments after her larger casts.
There is no universally optimal build for the encounter. The most reliable approach depends on the player’s equipment and familiarity with the attack patterns, but the matchup generally rewards aggression during her vulnerable windows and caution during large-area magic attacks.
Rennala’s rewards
Great Rune of the Unborn
Defeating Rennala grants the Great Rune of the Unborn. Unlike the Great Runes associated with several other major bosses, it is not a conventional stat-boosting rune that the player equips and activates for a combat bonus. Its function is connected to rebirth.
That difference is important. Rennala’s reward does not simply make the Tarnished stronger in the usual numerical sense. It gives access to a system that lets the player rebuild their character.
Rebirth and respec
After the battle, speak with Rennala in the Grand Library. She offers rebirth, which allows the player to reallocate attribute points spent during character development. Each rebirth requires a Larval Tear.
Rank #4
This makes Rennala unusually valuable even after her story encounter is over. A player can use her service to change from a strength-focused character to a sorcerer, adjust a build for a weapon, correct an early leveling decision, or experiment with a different balance of vigor, endurance, intelligence, faith, and other attributes. The player must still respect the minimum requirements of their starting class and the total number of points originally available; rebirth redistributes existing points rather than creating new ones.
Rennala also provides cosmetic character alteration. Appearance changes do not serve the same function as rebirth and should not be confused with a stat reset.

Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen
The fight also grants the Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen. It can be exchanged for one of two notable rewards:
- Rennala’s Full Moon, a powerful moon-themed sorcery.
- Carian Regal Scepter, a staff associated with Carian royalty and sorcery.
The choice depends on the build. A sorcery-focused character may value the spell, while a player building around intelligence and staff casting may prefer the Carian Regal Scepter. The Remembrance can also be duplicated through the game’s remembrance-duplication system, subject to that system’s restrictions.
Is Rennala required to finish Elden Ring?
Rennala is not required in exactly the same way as every mandatory progression gate. However, defeating her has substantial practical and narrative value. It unlocks rebirth, provides the Great Rune of the Unborn and her Remembrance, and forms an important part of the Carian and Ranni-related progression surrounding Liurnia.
Whether she is necessary for a particular route can depend on the player’s progression choices. Her fight is best viewed as a major regional and character encounter with valuable build-changing rewards, rather than as a boss whose only purpose is to block the main path.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat Rennala represents
Rennala combines several images that Elden Ring normally keeps separate: academic authority, queenship, motherhood, mourning, and dangerous magical experimentation. Her crescent-like crown and ceremonial robes present her as a monarch, while the library places her amid the institution she once ruled. The amber egg and the crawling sweetings reveal the cost of her attempt to restore what has disappeared.
The contrast between gold and moonlight is central to her presentation. The golden barrier protects Rennala during the first phase, while the second phase is dominated by blue lunar magic and a celestial landscape. This opposition echoes the historical conflict between the Golden Order and Caria, but it is not a simple good-versus-evil division. Rennala is sympathetic, yet the rebirth she pursues harms the very beings she seems to regard as her children.
One reading of the encounter is that Rennala embodies the impossibility of reproducing an idealized past. She has lost Radagon, her political position, and the identity she once possessed as a confident scholar-queen. Her response is repetitive and unstable: create another life, try again, and repeat the process. The game’s broader suspicion of systems that promise permanence through endless repetition makes her story particularly unsettling. This is an interpretation of the imagery, not a literal developer explanation of every detail.
Rennala’s design and fan culture
Rennala’s visual identity is built from a few immediately recognizable elements: the large crescent-shaped crown, the formal queen’s robe, the amber egg, Carian ornamentation, and the shift from gold protection to blue lunar sorcery. Her costume communicates both status and collapse. She still looks like a queen, but the surrounding library, the dependent scholars, and the repeated rebirths show that the authority of her former life has become hollow.

It is an art reference, not a substitute for an in-game lore guide or boss walkthrough.
There is also a licensed humorous manga treatment of the setting. Elden Ring: The Road to the Erdtree, Vol. 4 features Raya Lucaria and identifies Queen Rennala in its official synopsis. It should be approached as a comedic supplementary story rather than as a source for definitive game canon.

What does Rennala’s Great Rune do?
The Great Rune of the Unborn is tied to rebirth rather than a conventional combat stat bonus. After defeating Rennala, it enables her rebirth service, which lets the player reallocate attributes by spending a Larval Tear.
What is the best reward from Rennala’s Remembrance?
The Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen can be exchanged for Rennala’s Full Moon sorcery or the Carian Regal Scepter. The better choice depends on the build: spellcasters may prefer the sorcery, while intelligence-focused staff users may want the scepter.
Why does Rennala keep the amber egg?
The egg was given to her by Radagon and became the focus of her grief after he left. Rennala uses it in an attempt to perform rebirth, but the resulting sweetings are fragile and malformed. The game leaves some of the egg’s exact metaphysical rules unexplained.
The Bottom Line
Rennala is compelling because the boss fight is also a portrait of emotional and political ruin. The Tarnished defeats a former queen surrounded by the remains of her academy and her failed attempts at renewal, then inherits a reward that turns transformation into a useful player system. Her moonlight opposes the visual language of the Golden Order, but her story is not a simple rebellion narrative: it is about abandonment, grief, and the danger of trying to recreate a lost past.
