Epic Games Launcher, GOG GALAXY, Ubisoft Connect, the EA app, and Battle.net are also worth keeping because some games require their publisher’s own client for installation, updates, authentication, cloud saves, or DRM.
The important distinction is that a library manager does not necessarily replace the stores and publisher launchers behind your games. Playnite can present games from several services in one interface, and Steam can create shortcuts for non-Steam games, but the original launcher may still be required to install, update, authenticate, or run a particular title.

Quick comparison
| Launcher | Best for | Operating systems | What it does best |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playnite | Organizing multiple PC libraries | Windows 10/11 | Combines libraries from many storefronts and supports desktop and controller-oriented Fullscreen modes |
| Steam | Most PC players | Windows, macOS, Linux | Large storefront, community features, controller support, Workshop, achievements, broadcasts, and chat |
| Epic Games Launcher | Epic Store purchases and free-game promotions | Windows and macOS | Installing and launching Epic Games Store titles, with per-game launch arguments |
| GOG GALAXY | GOG’s DRM-free catalog and library aggregation | Windows and macOS | Importing connected libraries, extensive organization tools, GOG cloud saves, updates, and rollbacks |
| Ubisoft Connect | Ubisoft games and Ubisoft services | Desktop app for PC; supported games also work on consoles | Managing Ubisoft games, friends, rewards, cross-progression where supported, and Ubisoft+ access |
| EA app | EA games | Windows 10/11 64-bit and macOS Catalina or newer | EA’s current PC and Mac client, including EA games purchased through Steam or Epic |
| Battle.net | Blizzard and Activision games supported by the service | Windows and macOS | Game updates, news, social features, account security, and Blizzard’s storefront |
There is no single launcher that legitimately replaces every other client. Your best setup depends on whether you prioritize one storefront, a unified library, DRM-free games, controller-friendly navigation, or access to a specific publisher’s catalog.

Playnite is the strongest choice if your main problem is a scattered PC library. It is a free, open-source Windows game library manager and launcher rather than a storefront. It can aggregate libraries from Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Xbox PC, Humble, itch.io, Amazon Games, emulators, and manually added games.
#1 Best Overall
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Instead of opening several clients to find a game, you can browse one catalog and launch titles from a common interface. Playnite offers a conventional desktop mode and a separate Fullscreen mode designed for controller-oriented browsing, making it a useful option for a living-room PC or handheld-style setup.
Why Playnite is the best organizer
- Broad library aggregation: it can combine games from major PC stores, publisher clients, emulators, and local additions.
- Flexible presentation: filters, metadata, themes, and sorting can make a large collection easier to browse.
- Controller-friendly Fullscreen mode: useful when the PC is connected to a television or used from the couch.
- Portable option: the portable build can run without a traditional installation and starts with
Playnite.DesktopApp.exe. - Open extension ecosystem: community plugins and themes add functionality, although they also introduce compatibility risks.
Playnite does not take ownership of games or turn separate storefront licenses into one Playnite license. The source launcher can still be necessary for authentication, installation, updates, DRM, cloud saves, or platform-specific functions. Think of Playnite as the dashboard in front of your services, not a replacement for those services.
Troubleshooting Playnite startup problems
If an extension, custom theme, or third-party script prevents Playnite from starting correctly, launch it with the exact argument --safestartup. Safe Mode disables extensions, custom themes, and third-party scripts. If Playnite opens normally, you can also use Help → Restart in Safe Mode.

Plugin compatibility problems can occur after a Playnite update because plugins and themes are community-developed. The current official site lists Playnite version 10.51 and supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. Playnite is currently Windows-only; planned future Linux support through Playnite 11 and Avalonia UI should not be treated as available support today.
2. Steam: best all-around PC game launcher
Steam remains the best general-purpose launcher for most PC players because it combines a large store with a mature set of library and community features. It provides automatic game updates, community hubs, user reviews, achievements, Steam Workshop support, broadcasts, chat, and broad controller support.
Steam is especially convenient if most of your games were bought through Steam. Its library, download management, controller configuration, cloud-related features where supported, and social tools are integrated into one established client. The Steam Workshop is also a major advantage for games that support user-created maps, mods, or other content through that system.
Adding a non-Steam game to your library
Steam can create a library shortcut for a game or application purchased elsewhere:
- Open Steam and select Games from the top menu.
- Choose Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
- Select the application from the list, or use the browse option to find its executable.
- Click Add Selected Programs.
This gives the program a Steam library entry and may let you use Steam’s overlay or controller features, depending on the game and configuration. It does not convert an external purchase into a Steam-owned game. Steam will not take over that title’s licensing, store updates, achievements, cloud saves, or ownership records. A game that requires EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Epic Games Launcher, or another publisher client may still open that client when launched.
The commonly repeated claim that adding an Epic, EA, or Ubisoft game to Steam eliminates the original launcher is therefore incorrect. You are adding a shortcut, not migrating the game.
Who should choose Steam?
- Players buying most games from one PC storefront.
- Anyone who values reviews, community hubs, Workshop content, achievements, broadcasts, or chat.
- Players who want broad controller support and a mature download library.
- Users who want to add locally installed tools or games as shortcuts without moving them into Steam.
Steam is less useful as a true universal library manager than Playnite. A non-Steam shortcut is manual and limited, whereas Playnite is designed to aggregate multiple services.
3. GOG GALAXY: best for GOG games and flexible library organization
GOG GALAXY is the best fit for players who buy from GOG and want a polished way to organize connected game libraries. It is available for Windows and Mac. A GOG account and acceptance of the GOG GALAXY EULA are required.
GALAXY can import games through official and community-created integrations. Connecting another platform automatically imports the games associated with that platform, and individual games can also be added manually. Its library can show owned games that are not installed locally, which makes the catalog useful as an ownership index rather than merely a list of files currently on the computer.

Organization features
GOG GALAXY supports filters, sorting, search queries, user-created tags, saved views, and manually edited game metadata. Those tools are useful for building views such as “short games,” “co-op,” “installed,” “controller-friendly,” or “play next,” although the quality of imported information can vary between integrations.
GOG-specific features include automatic updates, cloud saves, multiplayer and matchmaking for supported games, and rollbacks to previous game versions. Rollbacks can be valuable when an update breaks a mod or changes compatibility, but availability depends on the individual game and GOG’s support for it.
What GOG GALAXY cannot replace
GOG is more transparent than many launchers about the limits of aggregation: other clients remain necessary for platform-specific operations such as installing or automatically updating games and using that platform’s cloud saves. Connecting a Steam, Epic, or console account does not turn GALAXY into that service’s complete replacement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo report a problem, open the app’s settings icon and choose Report an issue. The same settings menu includes Share feedback.
4. Epic Games Launcher: best for Epic Store purchases
The Epic Games Launcher is the required home for games purchased through the Epic Games Store. It is a straightforward choice if your library is primarily Epic’s catalog or if you want access to games and promotions exclusive to that store.
Installing an Epic game
- Open the launcher and select Library.
- Select the game you want to install.
- Choose the installation directory.
- Click Install.
- After the download finishes, select the game icon to launch it.
Do not assume that Epic will automatically adopt files already installed by another copy of the launcher or by a previous Windows installation. Epic’s current supported procedure, if the launcher was removed or Windows was reinstalled, is to reinstall the games from the Library tab. Community file-detection workarounds are unsupported and may not work consistently across games.
Skipping an additional publisher launcher
Some games start an additional publisher client before the game itself. Where the game supports it, Epic documents the -skip_launcher argument as a way to bypass that extra launcher. To add it:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Click your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Open Settings.
- Expand the affected game’s row using its arrow.
- Enable Additional Command Line.
- Enter
-skip_launcherin the command-line field.
This is not a universal switch. Epic says it generally works with publishers whose games have their own launcher, and the game itself must support the behavior. If the title still needs a publisher client for authentication or online features, skipping its visible startup window may not remove that underlying requirement.
Important ownership limitation
A game purchased on Steam, Origin/EA, or Ubisoft Connect cannot simply be linked or imported into Epic so that Epic launches it as an Epic purchase. Epic’s support documentation says the game must have been purchased from the Epic Games Store to play it through Epic’s launcher.
5. Ubisoft Connect: best for Ubisoft games
Ubisoft Connect is Ubisoft’s current desktop service and the successor to the old Uplay name. If you own Ubisoft games or subscribe to Ubisoft+, this is the client you should expect to use on PC.
Ubisoft Connect requires a Ubisoft account and is accessible through the desktop application and from supported games on PC and console. Ubisoft Connect PC is used to access and manage Ubisoft games, organize and customize the library, import Steam friends, and receive personalized recommendations.
Features beyond launching
The service includes cross-platform chat, friends, rewards, personalized recommendations, free games, trials, betas, and Ubisoft+ access. Cross-play and cross-progression are not universal: their availability varies by game and platform, so check the individual title before assuming that progress or multiplayer access will carry across devices.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Ubisoft games purchased through another storefront may still require Ubisoft Connect. Adding a shortcut to Steam or another organizer can make a game easier to find, but it does not remove Ubisoft account linking or the publisher client when the title requires them.
Ubisoft’s current product page does not provide a stable, text-indexed menu path for manually adding installed games or changing individual library folders. Because the client interface can change, it is safer to use the labels shown by your installed version rather than follow an old guide that claims a specific current sequence.
6. EA app: required client for EA games on PC
The EA app is EA’s current PC and Mac client; it replaced Origin. This matters because guides that tell readers to install or troubleshoot Origin are outdated for current EA app support.
On Windows, the EA app requires a 64-bit PC running Windows 10 or Windows 11. On Mac, it requires macOS Catalina or newer. You can sign in with an EA Account ID and password.
The EA app is used to download and play EA games, manage your collection, discover releases, and connect an EA Account with other gaming platforms to import friends lists. It is also required for EA games launched from Steam or Epic on PC. Buying an EA title through Steam does not necessarily remove the EA-app requirement; EA explicitly says its app is required to play EA games on PC, including games launched from Steam or Epic.
When EA app is the right choice
Choose it when your library is mainly EA’s catalog or when a Steam or Epic purchase directs you to install it. You can place shortcuts in Steam or Playnite for convenience, but keep the EA app installed and signed into the correct EA Account when a game depends on it.
7. Battle.net: best for Blizzard’s PC ecosystem
Battle.net is Blizzard’s current desktop client, replacing the outdated “Blizzard App” wording found in older guides. It is available for Windows and Mac and is used to launch supported games, connect with friends, receive news, shop for games and expansions, and keep games up to date.
Recommended Free Tools
Battle.net combines game management with a social and account hub. It includes messaging and voice chat, friends lists, real-time updates, news, sales, trailers, and patch notes. Account two-factor authentication is also supported, which is worth enabling for a library tied to paid games and in-game purchases.
Battle.net is the practical choice when a game belongs to its ecosystem. A third-party library manager can list and launch the title, but Battle.net may still be needed for authentication, patching, entitlements, or online services.
As with Ubisoft Connect, Blizzard’s current download page does not expose a stable, text-indexed exact menu path for importing manually installed games or changing an individual game’s installation directory. Avoid relying on old instructions unless they match the labels in your installed client.

Choose Playnite if your priority is one unified library
Playnite is the clearest answer for a collection spread across Steam, Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, Xbox PC, itch.io, Amazon Games, Humble, emulators, and local games. It reduces the need to remember where a title was purchased and offers a single controller-friendly interface. Keep the underlying clients installed because Playnite does not replace their account, update, DRM, or cloud-save systems.
Choose Steam if you want the best single storefront experience
Steam is the best default for players who want one mature store and a deep set of community features. Its Workshop, achievements, reviews, chat, broadcasts, and controller support make it more than a basic downloader.

Choose GOG GALAXY if you value GOG’s catalog or version control
GOG GALAXY stands out for GOG-specific support such as rollbacks, cloud saves, and automatic updates, alongside useful library filters and tags. It is also a good aggregator, but connected services may still be required for their own installation, updates, and cloud saves.
Keep publisher clients when the game requires them
Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, EA app, and Battle.net are not redundant if you own games tied to those ecosystems. A front-end such as Playnite or a Steam shortcut can improve discovery, but it cannot change how a publisher’s license and services work.
A practical multi-launcher setup
- Install the clients for the games you actually own. Do not install every launcher merely because it exists.
- Use the original storefront or publisher client for installation and updates. This is the most reliable way to preserve licensing and platform-specific features.
- Use Playnite as the front-end if you want one searchable catalog across services.
- Use Steam’s non-Steam shortcut for occasional external games or applications, but treat it as a shortcut rather than an ownership migration.
- Leave required publisher clients available. If a title depends on EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Epic, or Battle.net, closing or uninstalling that client can prevent the game from launching or updating.
- Keep account credentials and two-factor authentication organized. Multiple launchers mean multiple account relationships, especially for games bought on one storefront but linked to a publisher account.
- Check cloud-save behavior per game. A launcher’s general feature list does not guarantee that every title supports cloud saves or that saves synchronize between different storefront versions.
Common launcher myths corrected
“One launcher can replace all the others.”
Not reliably. Playnite organizes and launches games from many services, but the original clients may still handle authentication, installation, updates, DRM, and platform-specific features. GOG GALAXY also explicitly says other clients remain necessary for some platform operations.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

“Adding a game to Steam makes it a Steam game.”
No. Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library creates a shortcut. It does not transfer the license or provide Steam achievements, Workshop support, Steam cloud saves, or Steam-managed updates for that external purchase.
“Epic automatically finds files from an old installation.”
Epic’s current supported guidance says previously installed files are not detected automatically. Reinstall from the Library tab; unofficial file-adoption methods are not guaranteed.
“Origin, Uplay, and Blizzard App are the current names.”
The current names are EA app, Ubisoft Connect, and Battle.net. Older names still appear in search results and old troubleshooting posts, but they can send you to obsolete instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playnite launch games from Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, and Battle.net?
Yes. Playnite is designed to aggregate libraries from those services and launch games from a unified Windows interface. The original launcher may still open or remain necessary for authentication, installation, updates, DRM, cloud saves, or online features.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I play a Steam game through Epic Games Launcher?
No. Epic says games purchased from Steam, Origin/EA, or Ubisoft Connect cannot be played through Epic merely by linking or importing them. The game must have been purchased from the Epic Games Store for Epic to manage it as an Epic game.
Does adding a non-Steam game remove its original launcher?
No. Steam adds a library shortcut. If the game requires EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Epic Games Launcher, or another publisher client, that client may still be required.
Is Playnite available for Mac or Linux?
No. Playnite is currently Windows-only and supports Windows 10 and 11. Planned Linux support for a future Playnite version is not current platform support.
What replaced Origin?
The EA app replaced Origin on PC and Mac. Current EA app requirements are 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 on Windows, and macOS Catalina or newer on Mac.
The Bottom Line
For one unified library, choose Playnite. For one primary storefront, choose Steam. Keep Epic Games Launcher, GOG GALAXY, Ubisoft Connect, the EA app, or Battle.net when your games depend on those ecosystems. The most reliable PC setup is usually a library manager in front of the original clients—not an attempt to eliminate every launcher.
