A NorthbridgeFix repair technician estimated that the shop receives about 20 RTX 4090 cards with melted power connectors each week—or 80 to 100 a month. That figure, reported by HotHardware on June 11, 2024, describes one technician’s estimate of one shop’s incoming work. It is not an audited count or an industry-wide failure rate.
What does the 80–100 figure actually count?
HotHardware quoted Alex, identified as a NorthbridgeFix repair technician, saying the shop was still receiving about 20 cards a week and that he had first worked on an RTX 4090 card in January 2023. He estimated the monthly volume at 80 to 100 cards. HotHardware’s June 11, 2024 report attributes the estimate to Alex; it does not provide a fuller name or job title.

The claim is about the shop’s reported intake of cards with melted or burned power connectors. It does not say that every RTX 4090 is affected, establish how many cards were sold or in use, or show what share of the installed base failed. No independent audit of the shop’s volume is cited, and the report does not establish the present-day workload at NorthbridgeFix.

It shows that Alex said the shop was continuing to receive affected cards when the report was published in June 2024. It does not establish how frequently connector damage occurs across RTX 4090 owners, whether the number has changed since then, or why any particular card’s connector melted. The available figures cannot support a current, industry-wide failure rate.

How does the CableMod recall fit in?
A separate U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall covered CableMod 12VHPWR angled adapters, models V1.0 and V1.1, including 90-degree and 180-degree versions. CPSC said the manufacturer had received 272 reports of the adapters loosening, overheating, and melting into GPUs. The agency also reported at least $74,500 in U.S. property-damage claims and no reported injuries. About 25,300 adapters were recalled. These figures concern the recalled adapters—not all RTX 4090 connector damage.
CPSC’s notice, “GPU Angled Adapters Recalled Due to Fire and Burn Hazards; Manufactured by CableMod,” tells consumers to stop using the recalled adapters and contact CableMod for instructions on safe removal and the recall remedy. The figures in that notice should not be treated as a count of RTX 4090 failures generally.

What does NVIDIA’s setup guide instruct?
NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090 quick-start guide instructs users to connect the 16-pin plug of the NVIDIA power connector adapter to the power receptacle on top of the graphics card. That is the guide’s connection instruction; it is not a guarantee that connector damage cannot occur.
