Windows 10 can repair many startup and system-file problems without third-party software. Start in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) with Startup Repair; if that does not solve the problem, run DISM followed by System File Checker, try System Restore or update rollback, and use Reset this PC or installation media only after protecting your data. These tools can correct damaged Windows components and configuration errors, but they cannot fix failed hardware.

What Windows 10 can repair automatically

WinRE and Windows’ built-in servicing tools are designed for software faults that stop Windows from starting or make core components unreliable. Startup Repair can diagnose and attempt to correct missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data, a damaged master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers and certain registry errors. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while System File Checker (SFC) replaces corrupted protected files with cached copies.

Automatic repair is not a universal recovery mechanism. A failing SSD or hard drive, defective memory, overheating, a dead power supply, a broken display, or other physical fault requires hardware diagnosis or replacement. If the computer repeatedly returns to recovery after the steps below, treat hardware failure as a serious possibility rather than repeatedly resetting Windows.

Protect your files and recovery information first

  • Back up accessible files. Copy documents, photos, game saves and other irreplaceable data to an external drive or cloud storage before using Reset this PC or installation media.
  • Find your BitLocker recovery key. WinRE, Startup Repair and reset operations may ask for it when the system drive is encrypted. Do not begin a reset until you can retrieve the key.
  • Disconnect unnecessary devices. Remove external drives, docks, printers and USB accessories while troubleshooting. Leave the keyboard, mouse and display connected.
  • Record important app and account details. Resetting or reinstalling Windows removes applications, so note license information and make sure you know the passwords needed to restore accounts.

Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft’s free support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. Once the computer is stable, plan a move to supported hardware and Windows 11 where the device meets the requirements.

Enter the Windows Recovery Environment

Use Settings when Windows still starts

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Choose Update & Security > Recovery.
  3. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  4. After the restart, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options.

Let Windows enter recovery after failed starts

If Windows cannot complete startup, it can launch WinRE automatically after repeated failed starts. Allow the recovery screen to load rather than powering the computer off during the diagnostic process. If WinRE never appears, use a Windows installation or recovery USB as described later.

Run Startup Repair first

Startup Repair is the least-destructive automatic repair for a computer that will not boot. Microsoft describes it as a tool that automatically diagnoses and repairs common issues that prevent Windows from starting.

  1. In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
  2. Choose the Windows 10 account if prompted and enter its password.
  3. If BitLocker asks for a recovery key, enter the complete key.
  4. Select Restart when prompted and let the scan finish without interrupting power.

Startup Repair reports problems it cannot fix. If Windows boots afterward, test a normal restart and open the applications that previously failed. If it returns to the same recovery screen, continue with the next option rather than running Startup Repair repeatedly.

If Windows is stuck in an Automatic Repair loop

An “Automatic Repair” message means WinRE has detected startup trouble; it does not mean every problem has been repaired. Select Advanced options instead of repeatedly choosing Restart, then work through the least-destructive choices in this order:

  1. Run Startup Repair once.
  2. Try System Restore if a restore point is available.
  3. Use Uninstall Updates to remove a recently installed quality or feature update when the loop began immediately after updating.
  4. Open Command Prompt and run the DISM and SFC checks below.
  5. Use Reset this PC only after backing up data and confirming the BitLocker key.

Do not choose a destructive reset simply because the loop is inconvenient. The earlier options preserve more of your existing setup.

Repair corrupted system files with DISM and SFC

When Windows starts but shows missing-file errors, crashes, or unexplained component corruption, run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) before SFC. DISM supplies the files that SFC needs to repair the component store and protected system files.

Run the commands from an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Sign in to Windows, or in WinRE choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
  2. When Windows is running normally, open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for DISM to complete. It may appear to pause while checking and repairing the component store. Do not close the window or shut down the computer.

  1. After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow

Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files with cached copies. Restart Windows after the command completes, then check whether the original error or startup behavior has changed.

Roll back a recent change with System Restore

System Restore returns system files, drivers, registry settings and installed-program state to an earlier restore point. It does not remove personal documents, pictures or other personal files, but applications and drivers installed after the selected point may be removed.

  1. Open WinRE and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
  2. Select an administrator account and provide its password if requested.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the failures began. Use Scan for affected programs when offered to review software that will be changed.
  4. Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.

Do not turn off the computer while the restoration is running. If no restore points exist, use Startup Repair, DISM/SFC or the reset options instead.

Isolate software conflicts with a clean boot

A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so you can determine whether a background application or service is causing crashes or freezes. This is appropriate when Windows starts, but an app or service fails during normal use.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account and press Windows key + R.
  2. Type msconfig and press Enter.
  3. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all.
  4. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled third-party startup items.
  5. Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration and restart.

If the problem disappears, re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting between groups, until the conflicting program is identified. Restore normal startup afterward by opening msconfig, selecting Normal startup, and restarting.

Reset this PC without choosing the wrong option

Reset this PC reinstalls Windows and offers two file choices and two installation sources. It is more disruptive than Startup Repair, System Restore or DISM/SFC, so back up first and keep the BitLocker key available.

Choice What it does When it fits
Keep my files Preserves personal files but removes installed apps and resets settings. Windows is badly corrupted and your files are backed up or still accessible.
Remove everything Erases personal files, apps and settings while reinstalling Windows. You are preparing the device for a new owner or need a completely clean system.
Cloud download Downloads a fresh Windows copy. Local recovery files may be damaged and a reliable internet connection is available.
Local reinstall Uses Windows files already stored on the PC. You want to avoid a large download and the local image is usable.

Start the reset

  1. In Windows, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and select Get started under Reset this PC. From WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
  2. Select Keep my files or Remove everything.
  3. Select Cloud download or Local reinstall, review the summary and confirm.
  4. Keep the computer connected to power. If the display remains black for an extended period, do not manually restart it; Microsoft warns that interrupting the reset can cause it to fail.

Use a recovery USB or installation media as the last resort

When the internal recovery tools are unavailable or Windows is severely damaged, create bootable Windows media on another working PC. Use Microsoft’s Windows download process to create a USB drive, connect it to the affected computer, and boot from USB using the device’s boot-menu key.

  1. On the working PC, download Windows installation files and create a bootable USB drive.
  2. Connect the drive to the affected computer and select it in the firmware boot menu.
  3. At Windows Setup, choose your language and keyboard options, then select Repair my PC instead of installing immediately.
  4. Use the WinRE tools, including Startup Repair, System Restore, Command Prompt or Reset this PC.
  5. If repair is impossible, perform a reinstall only after verifying your backup and confirming that you accept data loss.

A reinstall from installation media removes everything on the device. Manufacturer recovery media may additionally restore hardware-specific drivers and factory applications, but it is still destructive unless the manufacturer’s process explicitly says otherwise.

Choose the next step by symptom

Symptom Least-destructive next step Escalate to
Windows will not boot WinRE > Startup Repair System Restore, Uninstall Updates, then Command Prompt
Missing or corrupted system files DISM followed by SFC Reset this PC if corruption persists
An app or background service conflicts with Windows Clean boot or the app’s Repair/Reset option System Restore or Reset this PC
Severe corruption or no usable internal recovery Recovery USB and a verified backup Reinstall Windows

Know when automatic repair is not enough

  • A drive that disappears from firmware, reports repeated read errors or makes unusual noises may be failing physically.
  • Repeated blue screens after clean Windows installation can indicate memory, storage, graphics, power or motherboard problems.
  • Startup Repair, DISM, SFC and Reset this PC repair software and configuration; none can restore a physically failed component.
  • A single crashing application may require an update, reinstallation, the publisher’s support process or help-desk assistance even when Windows itself is healthy.

After recovery, install available drivers from the computer or component manufacturer, reconnect peripherals one at a time, and keep a current backup. Because Windows 10 is no longer receiving free security fixes, use the recovered system as a bridge to a supported Windows release rather than as a long-term unsupported installation.

As an optional shortcut after trying Windows’ built-in tools, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check settings and potentially unwanted applications, and provide features such as a real-time boost and crash log. It runs on Windows 10, offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription, complements rather than replaces antivirus software, and cannot repair every crashing app.
