Resident Evil Village FPS drops usually come from a graphics setting that exceeds your GPU, ray tracing, an outdated or conflicting driver, shader-cache damage, background software, or heat-related throttling. The fastest reliable approach is to work through those causes in order rather than immediately buying hardware. Steam and Capcom describe the published figures as targets for an estimated 1080p/60fps experience, and Steam warns that frame rate can fall in graphics-intensive scenes. Use the steps below to identify whether your problem is GPU load, CPU or memory pressure, inconsistent frame times, corrupted data, or a thermal limit.
What causes Resident Evil Village FPS drops?
Village can run acceptably in one area and stutter in another because average FPS does not tell the whole story. A scene that suddenly increases lighting, geometry, effects, or streaming work can create a long frame, which feels like a hitch even when the displayed FPS counter still looks high. Ray tracing raises the GPU workload substantially. Drivers, overlays, recording applications, damaged shader data, and a hot laptop or desktop can create the same symptom on hardware that otherwise meets the game’s requirements.

First note where the drop occurs: during normal exploration, combat, menus, cutscenes, loading transitions, or only in a particular location. Also note whether GPU usage is near 100 percent, whether one CPU core is saturated, whether VRAM or system RAM is full, and whether clock speeds fall as temperatures rise. Those observations determine which fix is most likely to help.

The Steam/CAPCOM listing from 2021 gives targets, not a guarantee that every scene will hold a fixed frame rate. It lists an estimated 1080p/60fps experience and explicitly warns that “Framerate might drop in graphics-intensive scenes.” Compare your actual CPU, graphics card, dedicated VRAM, system memory, Windows version, and DirectX installation with the figures below.

If any component is below minimum, lower resolution and quality settings before considering an upgrade. If the system is below recommended but above minimum, begin at low or medium settings and raise one option at a time. A “good PC” in general terms may still be below Village’s ray-tracing tier or may be limited by a laptop’s power and cooling configuration.
Fix Resident Evil Village stuttering step by step
1. Turn off ray tracing when the GPU is near its limit
Disable ray tracing first, then restart the game and test the same area. Steam lists an RTX 2060 or RX 6700 XT as the ray-tracing floor, so a card below that level should not be expected to maintain the same workload. Even a card that meets the floor may need lower resolution or other quality settings for consistent frame times. If disabling ray tracing removes the hitch, you have identified a GPU-load limit rather than a damaged installation.
2. Update Windows and perform a clean graphics-driver installation
- Install pending Windows updates, restart, and test Village before changing several other variables.
- Download the current driver for your exact GPU from its manufacturer and choose the clean-install option when the installer offers one.
- Restart again after installation. Capcom notes that a clean installation can remove leftover DLLs and old profiles that conflict with the game.
Do not diagnose a driver problem solely from the date shown in Device Manager; use the manufacturer’s installer and record the driver version you tested. If the drops began immediately after a driver update, testing the previous stable driver is reasonable, but keep one known version installed rather than repeatedly layering packages.

- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics in Windows.
- Add the Resident Evil Village executable if it is not listed, select it, choose Options, and set High performance.
- On a laptop, connect the AC adapter while playing and select the Windows High performance power plan (or the equivalent maximum-performance mode supplied by the laptop maker).
A laptop that silently switches to integrated graphics or battery-saving limits can show low GPU usage and severe drops. After changing the setting, confirm in Task Manager or your GPU’s monitoring panel that the intended adapter is rendering the game.

4. Remove competing background work while testing
Close recording software, browser windows with heavy pages, performance overlays, chat overlays, and other resource-intensive applications. Disable one overlay at a time so you know which change mattered. Security software can also interfere: Capcom’s troubleshooting guide, updated July 22, 2026, says that some launch issues and frame drops may be caused by security software blocking the executable because of a false positive. Do not leave protection disabled permanently; instead, consult the security product’s documented game-exclusion procedure and restore normal protection after testing.
5. Verify the Steam installation
- In Steam, open your Library, right-click Resident Evil Village, choose Properties, and open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Allow Steam to reacquire files whose checksums are missing or changed, then relaunch the game.
This step addresses incomplete or altered files without deleting your entire installation. It will not correct an underpowered GPU or overheating, so continue with the other branches if the same area still stutters.
6. Rebuild the shader cache
Capcom states that damaged shader-cache files can cause graphical problems. Exit the game, open its installation folder, and look for shader.cache or shader.cache2. Delete the cache file that exists, then start Village and allow it to rebuild the required data. The first run after deletion can behave differently while shaders are regenerated; judge performance after revisiting the same scene rather than during the initial rebuild.

- Right-click the game executable and Steam shortcut, open Properties > Compatibility, and clear Run this program in compatibility mode unless you have a specific reason to use it.
- Make sure DirectX and Windows components are current through Windows Update and the game’s supported installation.
- Confirm that Village is using the monitor’s intended resolution and refresh rate. Test exclusive full-screen and borderless modes separately, changing only one option per test.
- Apply a frame-rate limit below the level your system can sustain if frame times oscillate sharply. A stable cap is often smoother than an uncapped counter that repeatedly hits a thermal or power limit.
8. Reduce heat and check for throttling
Capcom warns that gameplay may be less smooth when a PC generates too much heat. Clean blocked vents, leave space around a laptop’s intake and exhaust, and make sure fans are operating. Monitor GPU and CPU temperature, clock speed, and utilization while reproducing the drop. If clocks fall as temperatures rise, lower resolution, ray tracing, or other GPU-heavy settings and limit the frame rate; those changes reduce sustained heat. Do not treat a temperature limit as a file or driver fault, and do not obstruct a laptop’s vents while testing.

9. Reset Village’s graphics configuration safely
Use this Village-specific reset when settings changes have left the game unstable or it will no longer launch:
- Close Village.
- In the game’s configuration folder, rename
config.initoconfig_backup.ini. - Copy
config_default.iniin the same folder. - Rename the copy to
config.ini. - Relaunch the game and reapply settings gradually.
Keeping the backup preserves your previous configuration if you need to restore a particular control or display setting. Capcom cautions that graphics options set above a PC’s specifications can make operation heavy or even prevent launch.

Change one setting at a time and test the same route. The useful comparison is not only average FPS but also frame-time consistency, image quality, temperature, and reversibility.

If the GPU is not busy but one CPU thread is saturated, lowering GPU quality will not solve the bottleneck. Close background applications, check for recording or overlay hooks, and use a sensible frame-rate cap. If system RAM is nearly full, close memory-heavy applications before changing in-game quality.

Should you upgrade the GPU or RAM?
Upgrade only after completing the software, file, driver, and thermal checks. A new GPU is relevant when your card is below the published minimum or when you specifically want ray tracing but are below the RTX 2060/RX 6700 XT tier. An RTX 2060-class card is the directly stated starting point for ray-tracing support, not a guarantee of a fixed FPS in every scene. Additional RAM is relevant when the machine has less than the recommended 16 GB and routinely exhausts available memory; the listing’s minimum is 8 GB.
Hardware cannot repair damaged shader data, a wrong-GPU selection, driver conflicts, overlays, or overheating. Conversely, software tuning cannot create graphics performance that a below-minimum card does not have. Make the purchase decision from measured utilization, memory usage, temperatures, and the requirement tier rather than from the game’s average FPS counter alone.
When to contact Capcom support
If drops remain after the sequence above, record a reproducible example instead of describing the problem only as “bad performance.” Note the area, activity, whether it occurs in menus, cutscenes, or gameplay, and whether it happens every time. Include:
- CPU and GPU models, dedicated VRAM, and installed system RAM
- Windows and DirectX versions
- Graphics-driver version and whether the installation was clean
- GPU and CPU temperatures and clock behavior during a drop
- Monitor resolution and refresh rate, selected display mode, and ray-tracing status
- Security software, overlays, recording tools, and other background applications
- Your country or region and the exact game edition or platform
That information lets support distinguish a reproducible game issue from a local power, driver, configuration, or thermal problem.

There is no universal Village setting preset or guaranteed FPS value that applies to every processor, GPU, driver, monitor, and scene. The official listing’s 1080p/60fps wording is an estimate with an explicit intensive-scene warning. Treat your measured frame times, temperatures, and utilization as the deciding evidence. Start with ray tracing and GPU selection, then work through drivers, files, shader data, background software, display configuration, airflow, and the configuration reset before spending money.
