Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute“The program can’t start because repbrui.dll is missing from your computer.” The repbrui.dll file is the Microsoft Repository Browser UI component, a legacy file used by Microsoft Repository and SQL Server 2000 Meta Data Services.
It is not a normal Windows system DLL. The safest repair is to restore the complete SQL Server 2000 tools or Meta Data Services installation that originally supplied it, rather than downloading one loose DLL and copying it into System32.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list before changing anything:
- The error appears when opening Enterprise Manager, an MMC snap-in, DTS, Visual Basic, Visual Studio, or an old repository tool: reinstall or repair the original SQL Server 2000 tools and Meta Data Services components.
- The problem started after upgrading from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005: restore the SQL Server 2000 repository components or migrate the old DTS and repository workload.
repbrui.dllexists, but the application still fails: check companion files, especiallyrepbrui.rll,repbr.dll,repodbc.dll, anddbscan.dll.- The error says “The specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing even if
repbrui.dllis present. - The file disappeared after antivirus activity: inspect quarantine and restore the parent application from trusted installation media.
- The error occurs in an ordinary modern application with no SQL Server or repository history: verify the calling program before doing anything. A random file with the same name is not a safe replacement.
- You are considering
System32,SysWOW64, or a DLL download site: do not start there. This file normally belongs in the legacy shared repository folder.
What repbrui.dll is and where it belongs
repbrui.dll is commonly described as Microsoft Repository Browser. It is associated with Microsoft Repository, also called Meta Data Services, which stored metadata used by SQL Server and older development tools.
Microsoft documentation identifies the repository components under:
#1 Best Overall
- STREAMLIMED AND INTUITIVE UI | Intelligent desktop | Personalize your experience for simpler efficiency | Powerful security built-in and enabled.
- JOIN YOUR BUSINESS OR SCHOOL DOMAIN for easy access to network files, servers, and printers.
- OEM IS TO BE INSTALLED ON A NEW PC WITH NO PRIOR VERSION of Windows installed and cannot be transferred to another machine.
- OEM DOES NOT PROVIDE PRODUCT SUPPORT | To acquire product with Microsoft support, obtain the full packaged “Retail” version.
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedRepostry
Repostry is the historical spelling of the directory name. Do not correct it to Repository.
On 64-bit Windows, an old 32-bit installation may instead use a path under:
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesMicrosoft SharedRepostry
That path is an architecture-based possibility, not a guarantee for every installation. The correct location is the one used by the original Microsoft installer and the application that calls the file.
The repository package can include several related files:
repbrui.dll— Repository Browser UIrepbr.dll— Repository Browserrepodbc.dll— Meta Data Services repository enginedbscan.dllinsrepim.dllmsmdcxml.dllrepbrui.rlland other resource files- Additional repository and OIM model files
That is why replacing only repbrui.dll often produces a different error rather than a working application.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall SQL Server 2000 tools
This is the most likely and most reliable fix when the error involves Enterprise Manager, DTS, Meta Data Services, or an old SQL Server workflow.
Microsoft documented cases where upgrading to SQL Server 2005 removed the SQL Server 2000 Meta Data Services files. Removing SQL Server 2000 tools after an upgrade can have the same result.

- Identify the program producing the error.
- Write down the complete error message.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit.
- Locate your properly licensed SQL Server installation media or approved internal installation source.
- Back up DTS packages, repository data, and configuration files before modifying the installation.
Do not use an isolated repbrui.dll downloaded from an unknown source. The installer must restore the matching DLLs, resource files, registration entries, and dependencies together.
Repair from Windows Settings
If the SQL Server tools appear as an installed program:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the SQL Server 2000 tools or related repository installation.
- Select the ** three-dot menu** on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Select the tools, Meta Data Services, repository, or client components associated with the failed application.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the original program again.
If there is no repair option, uninstalling and reinstalling the complete legacy tools package may be necessary. Export or back up any old DTS packages before removing it.
Repair from installation media
The wording varies between SQL Server releases, but the process is generally:
- Insert or mount the original SQL Server installation media.
- Open This PC in File Explorer.
- Open the media and start the SQL Server setup program.
- Choose the option to modify, maintain, or install SQL Server components.
- Select the SQL Server 2000 client tools or Meta Data Services components.
- Include the repository and browser components rather than selecting only a single visible DLL.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Enterprise Manager, DTS, or the affected repository application.
If the installer refuses to run on Windows 10 or Windows 11, do not bypass security controls by downloading replacement files. Use a supported migration or an appropriately isolated legacy environment for the old tool, then move the data or packages to a maintainable platform.
How to tell whether this worked
Check for the legacy repository directory and its companion files. Then start the application that originally failed.

A successful repair should restore the application without a missing-file prompt. If the message changes to a registration, resource, or dependency error, the installation is still incomplete. Continue with the checks below instead of downloading another individual DLL.
Fix 2: Check for missing companion files
A repository installation can fail even when repbrui.dll is present.

- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
text
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedRepostry
- If that folder is absent, also check:
text
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesMicrosoft SharedRepostry
- Look for
repbrui.dll. - Look for
repbr.dll,repodbc.dll,dbscan.dll, and the relevant.rllresource files. - Confirm that the files came from the same SQL Server or repository installation.
- Do not mix files from unrelated downloads or different product packages.
A missing repbrui.rll file can cause a repository browser or MMC snap-in failure even when the DLL itself is present. A “specified module could not be found” message may also mean that a dependency of repbrui.dll is missing.
If one or more companion files are absent, return to Fix 1 and repair the complete package.
Fix 3: Register the repository components when required
Registration is relevant here because the repository browser uses legacy COM components. It is not a universal repair method for every missing DLL.
Register files only after restoring them from the original Microsoft installation package.
Register the UI file
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run the command that matches the actual installation path:
cmd
regsvr32 "C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedRepostryrepbrui.dll"
Or, for a 32-bit installation under Program Files (x86):
cmd
regsvr32 "C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesMicrosoft SharedRepostryrepbrui.dll"
- Read the result dialog.
- Restart the affected application.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s purpose and syntax.
A successful registration message confirms only that this file accepted registration. It does not prove that the whole repository package is complete.

Register the complete supplied set
Microsoft’s preserved SQL Server guidance identifies several repository files for registration, including:
Recommended Free Tools
repbrui.dll
repbr.dll
repodbc.dll
dbscan.dll
insrepim.dll
msmdcxml.dll
The exact registration order and file list should come from the original installation instructions or package. If the installer normally registers these files, rerun the installer rather than manually guessing.
Do not repeatedly run regsvr32 against arbitrary DLLs. If registration reports that a module, entry point, or dependency is missing, repair the package instead of forcing the command.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a legacy DLL because old repository components are uncommon or lack modern signing information. That does not prove the file was malicious, and restoring an unverified file is not safe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries matching
repbrui.dll, the SQL Server tools, or the repository directory. - Verify that the detected file is associated with your known SQL Server installation.
- If your organization manages antivirus, ask an administrator to verify the detection.
- Restore the file only when its source and expected path are confirmed.
- Prefer repairing the parent SQL Server tools installation instead of restoring a single quarantined DLL.
- Run another security scan after the repair.
Do not disable antivirus simply to install a DLL obtained from an untrusted source.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The repository technology is generally associated with old 32-bit software. A 32-bit Enterprise Manager or DTS tool may not work correctly with an incomplete or incorrectly placed installation.
Check the following:
- Is the calling application 32-bit?
- Was the SQL Server tools package installed as a 32-bit component?
- Is the file under the expected
Microsoft SharedRepostrydirectory? - Did someone copy it into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64? - Are the companion files from the same architecture and installation?
System32 is not a universal location for every DLL. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains the operating system’s 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 is associated with 32-bit compatibility. Copying a legacy repository DLL into either directory can create path conflicts and does not install its COM registration or dependencies.
Remove manually copied files only after confirming that the original installer does not require them there. Then reinstall the complete repository package to its intended location.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall the affected application or drivers
If the error is being raised by an older development tool, database utility, or packaged application rather than SQL Server itself, use the application’s official installer or repair option.

- Install its matching database tools or repository components if offered.
- Test the program again.
For software that communicates with specialized hardware, update the related driver only through Windows Update, the hardware manufacturer, or your organization’s approved source. Open Device Manager, expand the relevant device category, right-click the device, select Update driver, and follow the prompts.
Manually hunting compatible driver versions can take longer than diagnosing the original application, especially on older hardware. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and reinstalling the affected program remains the definitive fix for repbrui.dll.
Do not expect a modern driver update to recreate SQL Server 2000 Meta Data Services. Drivers are relevant only when the calling application also depends on damaged or obsolete hardware software.

repbrui.dll is a legacy application component, so SFC and DISM normally will not recreate it. These tools are appropriate when other Windows files are failing, Windows servicing is damaged, or several unrelated applications show corruption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun DISM

- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run:

- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.

Running these commands repeatedly without knowing what changed will not normally restore a removed SQL Server repository file. The manual process can also make it difficult to tell whether the actual application installation was repaired. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what it found; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version, and the SQL Server tools still need to be reinstalled when their files are missing.
Fix 8: Use Windows Features only for related Windows components
Windows Features do not normally install repbrui.dll, SQL Server 2000 Meta Data Services, or the Repository Browser. However, checking them can help when an old program also depends on a Windows compatibility component.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the enabled features.
- Enable only a feature specifically required by the application’s documented installation instructions.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not expect enabling .NET Framework, legacy components, or another Windows feature to replace the SQL Server repository package. If the application needs Meta Data Services, obtain that component from the complete licensed SQL Server tools installation.
Why downloading repbrui.dll separately is a bad repair
A loose DLL download can have the wrong:
- Version
- Architecture
- Companion files
- Registration data
- Resource files
- Dependency set
- Provenance
It may also contain malware or be altered after distribution. Even a genuine-looking file will not repair a missing repbrui.rll, repodbc.dll, COM registration, or repository installation.
Do not copy repbrui.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 unless the original Microsoft installer explicitly does so. The expected repository directory is normally under Microsoft SharedRepostry, not a Windows system directory.
When migration is the better fix
SQL Server 2000 Meta Data Services is obsolete. If the failing workflow is an old DTS package, Enterprise Manager task, or repository-dependent development project, restoring it may be necessary for short-term access, but it may not be the best long-term plan.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →After recovering access:
- Back up the DTS packages and repository data.
- Document the old server, tools, dependencies, and connection details.
- Determine whether the packages can be exported or migrated.
- Rebuild the workflow in a maintained database or integration platform.
- Test the replacement independently.
- Retire the legacy repository dependency when the replacement is confirmed.
This avoids keeping an obsolete 32-bit toolchain alive solely because one DLL is missing.
FAQ
Is repbrui.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a legacy Microsoft Repository Browser component associated with Meta Data Services and SQL Server-era tools. It should not normally be treated like a current Windows DLL.
Is repbrui.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe. A genuine copy should come from the known Microsoft repository installation and appear in the expected Microsoft SharedRepostry directory. Verify the parent installation and security history rather than trusting the name.
Should I register repbrui.dll?
Only when it was restored from the complete repository package and the application requires COM registration. Registering one copied DLL usually does not repair a damaged Meta Data Services installation.
Why does the error say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The message can refer to a missing dependency, an absent .rll resource file, an architecture mismatch, or an incomplete repository installation. Check the companion files and repair the complete SQL Server tools package.
Can SFC or DISM restore repbrui.dll?
Normally no. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components, not removed SQL Server 2000 repository files.
Is repbrui.dll used by modern SQL Server?
It belongs to the old Meta Data Services and Repository Browser technology. Current SQL Server versions do not provide it as a drop-in modern replacement.
What information should I collect if the repair fails?
Record the exact error, calling application, Windows architecture, SQL Server or tools version, full path of any existing repbrui.dll, antivirus quarantine result, and whether repbrui.rll and repodbc.dll are present. That information identifies whether the remaining problem is a missing file, dependency, registration entry, or obsolete application workflow.
