What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
rm.dll is a genuine Microsoft Outlook component, so a missing-file error usually means that the Office installation is damaged, incomplete, or being blocked. Repair Microsoft 365 or Office first, rather than downloading rm.dll and copying it into System32.
What this file actually does
rm.dll is an Outlook component developed by Microsoft Corporation. Its historical description is Outlook to DataViz API; newer file inventories may describe the related function as Outlook import/export or conversion support.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Outlook uses this component for parts of its import, export, and data-conversion features. It is an Office file, not a normal Windows system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, driver, or game library.
Microsoft has shipped Rm.dll in both 32-bit and 64-bit Outlook packages. The correct copy must match the installed Office package. A 32-bit version of Office running on 64-bit Windows is normal, so match the Office architecture rather than the architecture of Windows alone.

- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
The file normally belongs inside the Office installation, often in a CONVERT folder. Its exact location varies with the Office release, installation technology, language, and architecture. It should not normally be placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A random application folder
- A folder containing downloaded DLL files
Microsoft’s Outlook update packages include Rm.dll for both x86 and x64 editions, confirming that it is delivered with Outlook rather than as a separate Windows redistributable. Historical package examples have different file versions and sizes, so an old version found online is not a universal replacement.
Causes matched to symptoms
| Symptom or recent change | Most likely explanation | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears when Outlook starts | Damaged or incomplete Office installation | Run Quick Repair, then Online Repair |
| Problem began after an Office update | Interrupted or mismatched Office update | Update or repair Office using its normal channel |
| File disappeared after antivirus activity | rm.dll may have been quarantined |
Check Protection history before restoring anything |
| Outlook was uninstalled or reinstalled recently | Missing files or leftover installation entries | Repair, then reinstall the intended Office product |
| Error says “specified module could not be found” | rm.dll or one of its dependencies may be missing |
Repair Office rather than copying one DLL |
| Error says “not designed to run on Windows” | Wrong, damaged, or wrong-bitness Office file | Repair the matching Office installation |
| File is found outside the Office directory | Unrelated or suspicious copy may be present | Scan the file and reinstall Office from Microsoft |
| Several Windows applications are failing | Possible broader Windows corruption | Use DISM and SFC after repairing Office |
| Problem follows an old Outlook upgrade | Legacy profile or migration issue is possible | Test with a fresh Outlook profile after Office repair |
The wording alone does not prove that rm.dll is the only problem. For example, “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency required by rm.dll, not necessarily the file itself.
Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Office
This is the safest and most likely solution because Office repair restores the files, dependencies, and servicing information that a loose DLL cannot provide.
Windows 11
- Close Outlook and every other Office application.
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
- Select Quick Repair.
- Select Repair and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Outlook and check whether the error has disappeared.
Quick Repair is the faster, more limited repair option. It may restore a missing file without downloading the complete Office installation.
Windows 10
- Close Outlook and all Office applications.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Choose Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Run Quick Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Outlook.
If rm.dll is still missing, repeat the process and choose Online Repair instead. Microsoft describes Online Repair as the more complete option because it replaces the Office installation, while Quick Repair performs a faster, more limited repair. Online Repair requires an internet connection and may take longer.
After Online Repair:
- Open Outlook.
- Confirm that the original error no longer appears.
- Test the Outlook feature that previously failed, such as importing or exporting data.
- Open another Office application to confirm that the wider installation is working.
If Modify is unavailable, the Office installation may be managed by an organization, installed through a different method, or already damaged. Continue with the reinstall steps below.

Installing or repairing the wrong architecture can leave Outlook with incompatible files. Do not assume that 64-bit Windows means that Office is 64-bit.
Identify 32-bit or 64-bit Office
In Outlook:
- Open Outlook if it starts.
- Select File.
- Select Office Account.
- Select About Outlook.
- Read the information in the About window. It identifies the Office version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If Outlook will not start, open another Office application such as Word and use File > Account > About Word. The Office architecture is shared by the installed Office suite.
Identify the installation method
In an Office application:
- Select File.
- Select Account.
- Look under Product Information.
- If Update Options appears, the installation is generally Click-to-Run.
- If Update Options does not appear, the installation may be MSI-based or managed by an organization.
This distinction matters because Click-to-Run installations normally update through Office itself, while older MSI installations may use separate Microsoft update packages.

For MSI-based Office 2016, Microsoft provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit Outlook updates. Install only the package matching the installed Office architecture. Do not apply an x86 update to x64 Office or an x64 update to x86 Office.
Microsoft’s Outlook 2016 update documentation lists Rm.dll in both architectures and provides the applicable package information: Microsoft’s Outlook update documentation.
Fix 3: Update Office through Microsoft
A failed or interrupted Office update can leave Outlook files incomplete.
For Microsoft 365:
- Open Word or another Office application.
- Select File > Account.
- Select Update Options.
- Choose Update Now.
- Wait for Office to finish checking and installing updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Outlook again.
If Outlook and the other Office applications will not start, use Office repair instead of trying to update from inside Outlook.
For Microsoft 365 or Office 2024, Microsoft provides installation and reinstall instructions through its official account and installation page: Microsoft 365 and Office installation instructions.
For Office 2016, 2019, or 2021, use the version-specific Microsoft installation guidance: Microsoft Office 2016, 2019, and 2021 installation instructions.
After reinstalling, open Outlook and verify that the error is gone. If you have more than one Office version installed, remove obsolete versions before reinstalling the intended product.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a file after detecting suspicious behavior or a damaged file. Do not restore a file solely because its name is rm.dll.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the Office installation.
- Expand a detection to view its location and details.
If the item is clearly the genuine Office file and Microsoft Defender identifies it as a mistaken detection, Microsoft documents a Restore action. Restore only a verified Office file from the expected Office directory. Do not restore a file that is unsigned, located in a temporary folder, or recently downloaded from an unknown source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter restoring a verified file:
- Update Microsoft Defender.
- Run a full scan.
- Repair Office if Outlook still reports the file as missing.
- Do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion just to suppress the error.
If Defender repeatedly detects the file, treat that as a security issue. Scan the computer and reinstall Office from Microsoft instead of repeatedly restoring the same file. Microsoft’s instructions are available in Protection history in Windows Security.

Fix 5: Reinstall Office cleanly
Use a reinstall when Online Repair fails, Modify is unavailable, or multiple Office versions are interfering with one another.
Before starting, make sure you know which Microsoft account or product license is associated with Office.
- Close Outlook and every Office application.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to Microsoft’s official Office installation page.
- Download and install the licensed Office product.
- Restart Windows again.
- Open Outlook and test it.
If the normal uninstall leaves Office components behind, use Microsoft’s Office uninstall guidance and removal troubleshooter: Microsoft Office uninstall instructions.

It is also safer than copying rm.dll from another computer, because the reinstall restores the correct version, architecture, dependencies, and servicing metadata together.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are secondary steps for this error. They repair Windows components and protected Windows files; they do not normally reinstall an Office-owned DLL.
Use them when other Windows applications are also failing, Windows updates are damaged, or Office repair reports broader system problems.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait until the command completes.
- Restart Windows.
The process can pause for a while. Do not close the window simply because the percentage appears unchanged.

Run SFC
After Windows restarts:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Outlook.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Outlook afterward. If it cannot repair some files and rm.dll is still missing, return to Office Online Repair or reinstall Office. These commands are not a replacement for repairing the application that owns the DLL.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can show detected system issues in a scan; its full version performs the repair, but it is optional and does not replace Office repair when Outlook itself is damaged.
Microsoft’s reference material for these commands is available for DISM and System File Checker.
Fix 7: Check drivers only for wider system problems
A driver is not the normal cause of an Outlook-owned rm.dll error. Do not use Device Manager as the first repair method for this file.

Investigate drivers only if Windows is also showing hardware errors, Office crashes coincide with display or storage failures, or Device Manager reports a device problem.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, and Network adapters.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click an affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under the General tab.
- Use Driver > Update Driver only for the affected device.
- Restart Windows and test the original hardware-related problem.
Do not remove or replace unrelated drivers just because Outlook reports rm.dll. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; driver installation through its full version is optional, and it is not a substitute for repairing Outlook.
Windows Features are also not a normal fix for rm.dll. Enabling .NET Framework, Visual C++ components, DirectX, or another optional feature has no verified connection to this Outlook DLL.
Why downloading rm.dll separately is unsafe
Avoid DLL download repositories and copied files from another computer. A loose file may be:
- The wrong Office generation
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Intended for a different language or installation channel
- Modified or malicious
- Missing required dependencies
- Incompatible with the Office build that loads it
Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64 does not recreate Office’s installation records, update servicing, dependencies, or expected directory structure. It can also create DLL search-order conflicts.
The safe sources are Microsoft Office repair, Microsoft Office updates, Microsoft’s official Office installation pages, and a verified antivirus quarantine entry. The definitive repair is to restore the Office installation that owns the file.
Why regsvr32 rm.dll usually does not help
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not download a missing file, repair Office, replace dependencies, or make an incompatible DLL correct.
Running:
regsvr32 rm.dll
is therefore not a general solution. It may produce an error if the file is absent, if the command is run from the wrong directory, or if the DLL is not designed for self-registration. Microsoft’s command reference explains how regsvr32 works.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Historical Outlook profile issue
Very old Outlook versions had documented profile-upgrade problems involving Outlook information services and Rm.dll. Creating a new Outlook profile was used as a workaround for a historical Outlook 2002 issue.
That does not make profile recreation the normal fix for a modern missing-file error. Repair Office first. If Outlook opens but only one profile fails:
- Close Outlook.
- Open Control Panel.
- Search for Mail.
- Open Mail (Microsoft Outlook).
- Select Show Profiles.
- Select Add.
- Create a test profile.
- Configure the account.
- Choose the new profile for testing.
- Open Outlook.
A new profile can help identify profile corruption, but it cannot replace a missing Office file.

Is rm.dll a Windows system file?
No. rm.dll is an Office and Outlook component. It should generally be located within the Office installation, not in System32 or SysWOW64.
Does rm.dll belong to Outlook?
Yes. Its historical description is Outlook to DataViz API, and it supports Outlook import, export, and conversion functionality.
Is there a 32-bit and 64-bit version?
Microsoft has shipped both x86 and x64 Outlook versions. Match the file and repair process to the architecture of Office, not simply to the architecture of Windows.
Should I download rm.dll from the internet?
No. Use Office Quick Repair, Online Repair, an official Office reinstall, or a verified Defender restoration. A standalone DLL can be wrong, modified, or incompatible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould I copy the file to System32?
No. Copying it there does not repair Outlook and can create conflicts. Restore the Office installation instead.
Should I run regsvr32 rm.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 does not restore missing Office files and is not a general repair command for this component.
Will SFC fix rm.dll?
Usually not directly. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It is useful when broader Windows corruption is suspected, but Office Repair is the primary fix for an Office-owned DLL.
Why does Windows say that the specified module could not be found?
The message may mean that rm.dll is missing, or that a dependency required by it is missing. Office repair is the correct first response in either case.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is a new Outlook profile the fix?
Only in a narrow, profile-specific situation. A new profile does not normally fix a missing or corrupted Office file, so repair Office first.
