resedit.dll errors usually mean that a legacy Microsoft development tool cannot find its resource-editor component. The exact message may say “resedit.dll is missing,” “resedit.dll was not found,” or “resedit.dll could not be loaded.”
The important detail is that two different Microsoft products can use this filename. The older copy belongs to the 32-bit Visual Basic 6 Resource Editor, while another copy belongs to Visual Studio’s Visual C++ Resource Editor Package. Repairing the wrong product will not solve the error.

The 60-second answer
If the error comes from Visual Basic 6, look for:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioVB98Wizardsresedit.dll
On older 32-bit Windows installations, the path may be:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioVB98Wizardsresedit.dll
The safest repair is to run the original Visual Studio 6 or Visual Basic 6 installer in maintenance or repair mode and restore the Resource Editor component. Do not download an isolated DLL from a random website.
#1 Best Overall
If the file is already present, the problem may be per-user add-in registration. In that case, register the VB6 copy with the 32-bit regsvr32.exe, then enable it through Add-Ins > Add-In Manager.
If the path contains Common7IDEVCvcpackages, the file belongs to Visual Studio’s C++ tooling instead. Use Visual Studio Installer to modify or repair that installation.
What is resedit.dll
resedit.dll is associated with the Visual Basic 6 Resource Editor, published by Microsoft Corporation. It is an IDE add-in used to work with application resources in Visual Basic 6 projects.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is not normally a Windows system DLL, and it is not part of the ordinary VB6 runtime used to run compiled Visual Basic applications. The VB6 runtime and the VB6 development environment are separate components. Microsoft’s support documentation also distinguishes the supported VB6 runtime from the older VB6 IDE.
A commonly associated VB6 file has these properties:
| Property | Known information |
|---|---|
| Description | Visual Basic 6 Resource Editor |
| Product | Visual Basic 6 Resource Editor |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Architecture | 32-bit |
| Known version | 6.0.0.8450 |
| Approximate size | 368,640 bytes, about 360 KiB |
These values are useful for checking a restored file, but they are not universal fingerprints. Service-pack level and installation source can affect the exact version. Check the file’s own properties rather than rejecting a legitimate copy solely because its version differs.
First identify which application is failing
Before replacing anything, identify the program that displays the error and the location of the DLL.

The likely symptoms include:
- VB 6 Resource Editor is missing from Add-Ins > Add-In Manager.
- The Resource Editor toolbar or command is unavailable.
- VB6 reports that an add-in cannot load.
- VB6 reports an object-library or registration problem.
- The file is absent from the
VB98Wizardsdirectory.
This is the usual resedit.dll case.
If the error appears in Visual Studio
Visual Studio may report:
The 'Visual C++ Resource Editor Package' package did not load correctly.
That is a different component, even though it uses the same basename. Its file is typically under:
Common7IDEVCvcpackagesresedit.dll
Repair or update Visual Studio rather than copying the VB6 file into that directory.
If another application reports the error
Do not assume it needs the VB6 DLL. Check the application’s installation folder, startup configuration, and recent uninstall history. A private copy may belong to another legacy program.
The correct repair follows the calling application and its installation path:

Check the file before repairing it
Open File Explorer and inspect the likely VB6 directory:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioVB98Wizards
If that folder does not exist, check:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioVB98Wizards
If resedit.dll is present:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check File description, Product name, File version, and Company.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is available.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the VB6 installation rather than a temporary or download folder.
A file in the correct folder may still fail because it is damaged, blocked by security software, registered for another Windows user, or being loaded by the wrong application.
If the file is absent, proceed to repair or reinstall the owning product.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the VB6 Resource Editor
This is the most likely and safest fix when the error comes from Visual Basic 6.
The Tool Desk

- Sign in with an account that can install or repair software.
- Insert the original Visual Studio 6 media or open the authorized installation source.
- Start Setup.
- Choose maintenance, change, or repair mode if the installer offers it.
- Select the Visual Basic 6 components.
- Select the Resource Editor or related VB6 wizard and add-in component if it is listed.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Check for:
text
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioVB98Wizardsresedit.dll
- Start VB6.
- Open Add-Ins > Add-In Manager.
- Select VB 6 Resource Editor.
- Choose the appropriate load behavior, such as loading it when VB6 starts.
- Confirm that the Resource Editor command or toolbar is available.
The component name can vary slightly between installation media and maintenance screens. The objective is to restore the VB6 IDE add-in, not merely the VB6 runtime.
Microsoft’s VB6 Service Pack 6 cumulative update is an official x86 package named VB60SP6-KB2708437-x86-ENU.msi. It is useful for supported VB6 service-pack updates, but Microsoft’s public documentation does not establish that running this update alone restores a missing Resource Editor. Use the original IDE installation source when the add-in itself is absent.
If the file disappeared after cleanup or quarantine
Check whether antivirus software or disk-cleanup software removed it.

- Run a full security scan.
- If the file is a verified false positive, restore it according to your security product’s instructions.
- Repair the VB6 installation afterward if the file or related registration is damaged.
The installer remains preferable to a quarantine restore because it can restore associated resources and registration data as well as the DLL.
If Setup does not list the Resource Editor
The installer may be running from incomplete media, or the original installation may use a custom component layout. Try the authorized full installation source and select the VB6 IDE components rather than only runtime files.
Do not substitute vbrun60sp6.exe for the IDE installer. The VB6 runtime is intended to run compiled VB6 applications. It does not necessarily contain the Resource Editor add-in.

Fix 2: Register the restored VB6 add-in for the affected user
Registration is relevant to the VB6 Resource Editor, but it is not a general solution for every DLL named resedit.dll. Use this step only after verifying that the file is the VB6 copy in VB98Wizards.
On 64-bit Windows
VB6 is a 32-bit IDE. Use the 32-bit registration utility:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioVB98Wizardsresedit.dll"
- Select OK if registration succeeds.
- Close the command window.
- Start VB6.
- Open Add-Ins > Add-In Manager.
- Select VB 6 Resource Editor and choose its load behavior.
On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64regsvr32.exe is the 32-bit registration tool. The directory name is confusing, but it is the correct utility for a 32-bit VB6 add-in.
On 32-bit Windows
Use:
C:WindowsSystem32regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioVB98Wizardsresedit.dll"
If VB6 was installed in a different directory, replace the path with the actual location. Keep the quotation marks around paths containing spaces.
If registration succeeds but VB6 still cannot load it
The registration message only confirms that the registration utility completed. It does not prove that every VB6 dependency, registry setting, or user permission is correct.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTry these checks:
- Sign in as the Windows user who receives the error.
- Run the registration command again from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Start VB6 under that same account.
- Recheck Add-Ins > Add-In Manager.
- Confirm that the selected load behavior is enabled.
- Check whether security software is blocking the add-in.
- Confirm that the file is still in
VB98Wizards. - Do not merge registry files copied blindly from another computer.
Microsoft documented cases where VB6 add-ins were registered only for the account that installed VB6. A different Windows user may therefore see no Resource Editor entry even though the DLL exists.
If regsvr32 reports a missing entry point
Stop and recheck the file path. You may be registering the Visual Studio C++ copy, a damaged file, or a DLL from an unrelated application. Do not force registration of an arbitrary same-named file.
Fix 3: Repair Visual Studio’s C++ resource editor
Use this branch when the error mentions the Visual C++ Resource Editor Package or the path contains Common7IDEVCvcpackages.
- Open Start.
- Search for Visual Studio Installer.
- Open it.
- Find the affected Visual Studio installation.
- Select Modify.
- Ensure the relevant C++ desktop-development and resource-editor components are selected.
- Apply the changes.
- Restart Visual Studio.
- If the package still fails, return to Visual Studio Installer.
- Select More next to the installation.
- Choose Repair.
- Start Visual Studio and test the resource editor again.
For Visual Studio 2017, Microsoft documented a resource-editor package-loading issue fixed in version 15.8.2. If the installation is an older servicing level, update it through Visual Studio Installer where an applicable update is offered.
Do not copy the VB6 VB98Wizardsresedit.dll into Visual Studio’s vcpackages directory. The two files have different product roles and may have different dependencies.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM are not the normal way to restore a missing VB6 IDE add-in. The file is not ordinarily part of the Windows component store. Use these commands when you also have broader Windows integrity symptoms, such as damaged built-in components, failed servicing, or repeated system-file errors.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Then run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the original application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but resedit.dll is still missing from VB98Wizards, that result is expected. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not normally missing files from a Visual Basic 6 IDE installation. Return to the VB6 installer repair path.

Running these commands repeatedly without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slower. If you prefer a guided scan while checking Windows components manually, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it identifies; its repair actions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the VB6 Resource Editor.
Fix 5: Check compatibility and architecture
The VB6 IDE and Resource Editor are 32-bit. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run 32-bit applications through its compatibility layer, but it cannot use a 64-bit replacement as a substitute for this add-in.
Check the following:
- The file is in the 32-bit VB6 installation tree.
- On 64-bit Windows, you use
SysWOW64regsvr32.exe. - You are not using a Visual Studio C++ DLL in place of the VB6 file.
- The application requesting the file is actually VB6 or a program installed with VB6.
- The file has not been renamed, copied from a different product, or placed in
System32.
Do not copy the DLL into:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
as a default fix. The VB6 add-in belongs in its product directory.
Installing a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable is also not a first-line solution. Consider a runtime dependency only when the error identifies a specific missing runtime or entry point. A plain resedit.dll not-found message normally points first to the owning IDE installation.

Fix 6: Investigate a stale startup reference
If no installed program currently needs VB6, but Windows reports the error at every login or startup, the request may come from old software that was partially removed.
Check:
- Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Task Scheduler for entries belonging to removed legacy software.
- Recently uninstalled development tools or applications.
- Shortcuts in the Startup folder.
Remove or repair the application that is making the request rather than placing an unrelated DLL on the system. If the error appears only after launching a particular shortcut, inspect that application’s installation and configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When manual copying is acceptable
Manual copying is reasonable only when all of these conditions are true:
- The source is an original or authorized matching VB6 installation.
- The source file’s product identity and architecture match the affected installation.
- The destination is the correct
VB98Wizardsdirectory. - The file has been checked for signature, version, and malware.
- You understand that registration may still be required for the affected user.
After copying, use the correct 32-bit regsvr32.exe command and check Add-Ins > Add-In Manager.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not copy a file from:
- A random DLL download page.
- A different Visual Studio release.
- Another computer without verifying its VB6 version and service-pack state.
System32orSysWOW64.- A game or unrelated application directory.
A standalone download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or no related resources and registry data. It may also conceal the real problem, such as an incomplete VB6 installation or a stale Visual Studio reference.
Why common fixes often fail
Installing the VB6 runtime
The runtime is for executing compiled VB6 programs. resedit.dll is an IDE add-in. Installing the runtime does not normally restore the Resource Editor.
Best Value
Installing Visual C++ Redistributables
These packages do not install the VB6 Resource Editor. They are relevant only when a separate dependency error specifically identifies a C or C++ runtime problem.
Running SFC alone
SFC does not normally restore a missing file from the VB6 IDE directory. It repairs protected Windows components.
Registering the wrong copy
A successful registration message for a DLL under Common7IDEVCvcpackages does not repair the VB6 add-in. Always confirm the path before running regsvr32.
Using the 64-bit registration tool
On 64-bit Windows, the VB6 add-in needs the 32-bit registration utility under SysWOW64.
Installing Windows Features
Windows Features does not normally contain the VB6 Resource Editor. Do not expect enabling .NET Framework, legacy components, or another optional Windows feature to recreate a missing VB6 IDE add-in.
Updating drivers
A driver update is not a normal fix for a missing IDE DLL. Driver troubleshooting belongs to a separate hardware or device failure. If the same computer also has unresolved driver problems, Outbyte Driver Updater can identify stale drivers; its full-version driver installation is optional and will not replace the VB6 Resource Editor.

Verification checklist
After repairing the correct product, confirm:
- The error no longer appears when launching the affected application.
- The file is in the expected product directory.
- File properties identify the correct Microsoft product.
- The architecture is 32-bit for the VB6 copy.
- VB6 shows VB 6 Resource Editor under Add-Ins > Add-In Manager.
- The add-in loads for the Windows account that needs it.
- Visual Studio’s C++ package, if applicable, opens without a package-load error.
- Antivirus has not quarantined the restored file again.
- You have not placed the file in a Windows system directory.
If the error returns after every repair, identify which program requests it, check the antivirus history, inspect per-user add-in registration, and verify that the repaired application is not being partially removed by another installer or cleanup tool.
FAQ
Is resedit.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. The VB6 copy belongs to the Visual Basic 6 Resource Editor, not to the normal Windows system files. Another installed application may keep its own copy, so the calling product still matters.
Is resedit.dll part of the VB6 runtime?
No. It belongs to the VB6 IDE Resource Editor add-in. The runtime and the development environment are separate deliverables.
Can I download resedit.dll by itself?
Avoid random DLL download sites sites. Use the original Visual Studio 6 or VB6 installation media, an authorized installation source, or Visual Studio Installer for the separate C++ package.
Should I run regsvr32 resedit.dll?
Only after confirming that the file is the VB6 Resource Editor copy in VB98Wizards. On 64-bit Windows, use the 32-bit utility at C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe.
Why is the file missing from Add-In Manager even though it exists?
VB6 add-in registration can be per-user. Register the verified VB6 copy while signed in as the affected user, then reopen Add-Ins > Add-In Manager.
Will the known version always be 6.0.0.8450?
No. That is a known associated version, not a requirement for every legitimate installation. Check the file’s product details and installation source.
Is the VB6 IDE supported on current Windows versions?
Microsoft documents support for VB6 runtime compatibility on supported Windows versions. That does not mean the legacy VB6 IDE itself receives current product support. Repairing it may therefore require the original media and careful compatibility testing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if the message says “bad image” instead of “missing”?
A bad-image or entry-point error usually indicates a damaged, incompatible, or wrong-version module rather than a simple missing file. Identify the calling product, remove any mismatched replacement, and repair that product from its official installation source.
