btwizard.dll Missing: Restore Broadcom Bluetooth on Windows

Length11 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

btwizard.dll is a Broadcom Bluetooth Software component, not a normal Windows system file. When Windows reports that btwizard.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the safest repair is to restore the complete Broadcom or WIDCOMM Bluetooth package for your specific computer or adapter.

The file is identified as BtWizard Module and is associated with Bluetooth Software from Broadcom Corporation. Older Broadcom packages used WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software for Windows, including packages from the BTW product family. The exact package varied by laptop, motherboard, USB adapter, and Windows version.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Do not download an isolated copy of btwizard.dll and place it in System32. That can leave the wrong version, architecture, or dependent files on the computer while the original startup or Bluetooth installation remains broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the error means

You may see one of these messages:

  • “The program can’t start because BtWizard.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “This application failed to start because BtWizard.dll was not found.”
  • “The file BtWizard.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “RUNDLL Error loading btwizard.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “BtWizard.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The error commonly appears when:

  • A Broadcom or WIDCOMM Bluetooth installation was damaged.
  • A Bluetooth driver was removed during another uninstall.
  • An update replaced or disabled part of the Bluetooth software.
  • Antivirus software quarantined the file.
  • A startup entry still points to software that has already been removed.
  • The DLL is present but one of its dependent files is missing.
  • The installed package does not match the adapter or Windows architecture.

If Bluetooth still works and only a startup popup appears, the problem may be an obsolete startup command rather than a missing Bluetooth driver.

Before repairing anything

First identify whether the computer actually uses Broadcom Bluetooth hardware.

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth.
  3. Select the Bluetooth adapter, right-click it, and choose Properties.
  4. Open the Details tab.
  5. Select Hardware Ids from the Property list.
  6. Record the adapter or manufacturer information.

Also check the installed software:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps.
  4. Search for Broadcom, WIDCOMM, Bluetooth Software, or the computer or adapter manufacturer’s Bluetooth utility.

On Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features, or open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

Do not assume that every Bluetooth adapter needs Broadcom software. Windows can provide its own Bluetooth stack, and another vendor’s package may be correct for the hardware.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Bluetooth package

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes, plus any download time

This is the most likely fix because btwizard.dll belongs to Bluetooth Software rather than Windows itself.

Find the correct installer

Use the support page for the exact:

  • Laptop or desktop model
  • Motherboard model
  • USB Bluetooth adapter
  • Windows edition and architecture

If the computer was built by an OEM, start with that manufacturer’s driver page. If Bluetooth is provided by an add-in adapter, use the adapter manufacturer’s support page. Look for a package named Bluetooth driver, Bluetooth Software, WIDCOMM Bluetooth, or Broadcom Bluetooth.

Do not choose a package only because its filename contains btwizard.dll. Historical file inventories report different versions and builds, but those reports are not a current Broadcom package manifest and should not be treated as download targets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove the damaged installation

If Bluetooth software is listed:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the Broadcom, WIDCOMM, or Bluetooth Software entry.
  3. Select the three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. Restart Windows when prompted.

If the uninstaller fails, use Control Panel > Programs and Features, select the same program, and choose Uninstall.

Do not remove unrelated Bluetooth packages from other vendors unless you have confirmed that they belong to the same adapter. Installing competing Bluetooth stacks can create additional service and startup conflicts.

Amazon Basics Bluetooth 5.4 USB Adapter Dongle for PC, USB Receiver for Bluetooth Mouse, Keyboard, Laptop, Works with Windows 11/10/8.1
  • INSTANT BLUETOOTH ACCESS: Bluetooth dongle adapter receiver for PCs converts non-Bluetooth devices into Bluetooth-capable with simple USB connection
  • WIDE COMPATIBILITY: Supports Bluetooth 5.4 and is backwards compatible with Bluetooth 5.3/5.2/5.1/5.0/V4.2/4.0/3.0/2.1/2.0/1.1; ONLY works with Windows 8.1, 10, and 11
  • MULTI-DEVICE CONNECTION: Connect up to 6 devices simultaneously; Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Nano bluetooth receiver can be plugged in via any standard USB port
  • ENHANCED PERFORMANCE: EDR and BLE technology offers enhanced data rate/transfer speed and low energy consumption
  • SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Disable any built-in Bluetooth of the device before use this product, refer to the user manual for detail

Install the manufacturer package

  1. Close running applications.
  2. Run the downloaded installer.
  3. Approve the administrator prompt.
  4. Follow the setup instructions.
  5. Restart Windows even if the installer does not require it.
  6. Test Bluetooth from Settings > Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices on Windows 10.

A successful repair normally removes the direct btwizard.dll error, restores the Bluetooth adapter in Device Manager, and allows Bluetooth settings or the Broadcom utility to open.

If the installer says that the hardware is unsupported, stop there. That usually means the package is for a different adapter, computer model, or Windows architecture. Return to the manufacturer’s support page and identify the hardware again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Update or reinstall the adapter in Device Manager

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

Use this repair when Bluetooth is listed but does not start correctly, or when the error began after a driver update.

Search automatically for a driver

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Bluetooth.
  4. Right-click the adapter.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows after the process completes.

Windows may install a compatible Bluetooth driver, but that does not guarantee that it will restore every older Broadcom utility component, including btwizard.dll. If the DLL error remains, install the complete package from the computer or adapter manufacturer.

Reinstall the device

If the adapter has a warning icon or the update did not help:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth.
  3. Right-click the affected adapter.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. Confirm the removal.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Open Device Manager again.
  8. Select Action > Scan for hardware changes if the adapter does not return automatically.

If Windows does not detect the adapter after the restart, check Other devices in Device Manager. If it is absent there too, the issue may involve a disabled wireless device, a USB connection, a hardware switch, BIOS or UEFI settings, or an incorrect driver. Replacing btwizard.dll will not make undetected hardware appear.

Manually hunting through several driver packages can be tedious when the hardware ID is unclear. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the problem, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the exact OEM Bluetooth package remains the definitive fix when this file belongs to a Broadcom-specific utility.

Fix 3: Check Windows Update

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

Windows Update can repair the underlying Bluetooth driver or install a compatible replacement.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Open Advanced options.
  6. Select Optional updates if the option is present.
  7. Expand Driver updates.
  8. Install a Bluetooth-related driver if it matches your hardware.
  9. Restart Windows.

On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.

Windows Update may restore Bluetooth operation without restoring the old Broadcom configuration utility. If the device works but btwizard.dll still appears in a startup error, continue to the startup-entry repair below.

Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender Protection history

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes

Antivirus quarantine is possible when the error began immediately after a security scan or cleanup.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review recent quarantined items.
  5. Look for an entry involving the Broadcom Bluetooth installation.
  6. Open the entry and review its file path, detection name, and action.

Do not restore a file merely because its name is btwizard.dll. Restore it only when you can confirm that it came from the manufacturer’s official Bluetooth package and that its location and digital signature are consistent with that installation.

If the file was quarantined, the safer approach is usually to reinstall the complete verified Bluetooth package rather than restore an isolated item. If Defender continues to detect the file, leave it quarantined and scan the computer. A detection does not automatically prove that every copy is malicious, but it does mean the source and signature need to be verified before allowing it.

Fix 5: Remove an obsolete startup reference

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

A RUNDLL message at startup can remain after the DLL has been replaced because Windows is still trying to launch an old Broadcom command. A missing dependency can produce the same message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Bluetooth works normally and the only symptom is a popup, first inspect startup applications:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for Broadcom, WIDCOMM, Bluetooth, or an entry with an unavailable publisher.
  4. Select the entry.
  5. Choose Disable.
  6. Restart Windows.

If the popup disappears and Bluetooth remains functional, the obsolete startup command was likely the problem.

Next, remove the old software properly:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Uninstall the unused Broadcom or WIDCOMM utility.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Check Task Manager again.

Do not delete random registry values. If the entry does not appear in Startup apps, inspect Task Scheduler only when you can identify the task and its executable:

  1. Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
  2. Open Task Scheduler Library.
  3. Review tasks that clearly belong to Broadcom or WIDCOMM.
  4. Check the Actions tab before changing anything.
  5. Disable the task only when its path is clearly obsolete.
  6. Restart and test.

An old startup reference can be left behind after an incomplete uninstall. Replacing the DLL alone does not necessarily repair that reference or restore the dependencies it expects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

DISM and System File Checker are useful when Windows has broader corruption, update failures, or damaged system components. They are not the primary repair for a third-party Broadcom DLL, but they can rule out Windows corruption affecting driver installation.

  • Plug and Play: The Bluetooth receiver is developed for Windows systems only and does not support other systems. No driver installation is required under Windows 11/10/8.1. NOTE: Linux and MacOS , Win 7 System are NOT supported.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test Bluetooth again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the manufacturer driver repair rather than copying btwizard.dll manually.

If repeatedly running these commands without knowing what changed is becoming a dead end, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what is wrong; its free scan identifies issues, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Broadcom program remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.

Fix 7: Check architecture and dependencies

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

A 32-bit application needs the matching 32-bit component, while a 64-bit program needs a compatible 64-bit installation. A file with the correct name can still fail if it belongs to the wrong package or depends on other missing files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check your Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > About.
  3. Review System type.

On Windows 10, use Settings > System > About.

Use the installer supplied for the exact computer or adapter rather than selecting a DLL based on a reported version or file size. Public inventories have reported historical versions and architectures, but those details are not a guarantee that the same build belongs on your system.

A message saying the file is “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate corruption, incompatible architecture, or a missing dependency. It does not by itself prove that the file is malware.

Do not use Windows Features or regsvr32 as a shortcut

There is no Windows Features checkbox that generally restores Broadcom’s btwizard.dll. You can open Settings > Apps > Optional features or Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off, but enabling unrelated Windows components will not rebuild a missing third-party Bluetooth installation.

regsvr32 is also usually the wrong command:

regsvr32 btwizard.dll

This command registers DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore missing dependencies, repair a damaged Bluetooth package, or recreate a deleted startup installation. It may simply return an entry-point error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the vendor installer instead. Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor’s documentation specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL.

Common causes and the correct response

Likely cause What usually fixes it
Damaged Broadcom or WIDCOMM installation Reinstall the complete OEM Bluetooth package
Bluetooth software removed incompletely Reinstall it, or uninstall the remaining software cleanly
Driver update or rollback issue Update or reinstall the adapter in Device Manager
Antivirus quarantine Verify the source, then reinstall the official package
Orphaned startup command Disable the startup entry or remove the obsolete utility
Wrong architecture or package Install the driver matched to the adapter and Windows
Missing dependency Repair the complete application, not only the DLL
General Windows corruption Run DISM, then SFC
Hardware not detected Check Device Manager, connections, wireless controls, and firmware settings

Why standalone DLL downloads usually fail

Downloading btwizard.dll from a random DLL site creates several problems:

  • The file may contain malware or tampering.
  • The version may not match the Bluetooth utility.
  • The architecture may be wrong.
  • Required dependent files may still be missing.
  • Windows may continue launching an obsolete startup command.
  • The file may not have a verifiable Broadcom signature.
  • Placing it in System32 can damage other software or conceal the real installation problem.

The safe source is the official support package for your computer, motherboard, or Bluetooth adapter. If the hardware manufacturer no longer provides the old WIDCOMM utility and Windows Bluetooth works without it, removing the obsolete utility may be safer than forcing an old DLL onto a newer Windows installation.

FAQ

Is btwizard.dll a genuine Windows file?

It is a genuine file associated with Broadcom Bluetooth Software, but it is not established as a standard Windows system DLL. Treat it as third-party application software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is btwizard.dll malware?

The filename alone cannot answer that. Verify the file’s source, location, digital signature, and relationship to an installed Broadcom or WIDCOMM package. A copy in an unusual directory or one detected by security software should not be restored blindly.

Should I copy it into System32?

No. Public file databases do not establish one universal location, and the correct location depends on the installed package. Use the complete manufacturer installer.

Will installing Visual C++ Redistributable fix the error?

Do not make that the default diagnosis. btwizard.dll is documented as Broadcom Bluetooth software, not as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Restore the Bluetooth package first.

Why does the RUNDLL error remain after I replaced the DLL?

The startup command may point to an old installation, or another dependency may be missing. Disable the obsolete startup entry and repair or uninstall the complete Bluetooth software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Windows Update restore this exact file?

Windows Update may install a compatible Bluetooth driver, but that does not establish that it will restore this particular legacy Broadcom utility DLL. Use the OEM or adapter manufacturer’s package when the file itself is required.

What if Bluetooth is not listed in Device Manager?

A missing btwizard.dll cannot repair undetected hardware. Check hidden devices, USB connections, wireless controls, BIOS or UEFI settings, and the manufacturer’s hardware driver.

Should I use System Restore?

System Restore can help when the problem began immediately after a known uninstall or update. Try the correct driver reinstall and clean uninstall path first, then use System Restore if those steps fail and a suitable restore point exists.
