Use Billy with the shotgun if you have it, take a position with a broad view of the church, and aim upward when the giant bat comes within range. Smaller bats can disrupt your aim, but they are optional: focus on killing the large bat, then use Rebecca and the Hookshot to reach the roof.
When the Church Bat fight starts
The encounter begins when you return to the church’s main hall after searching the side room with the typewriter. That room is a useful place to prepare before triggering the fight. A walkthrough lists a typewriter, Ink Ribbon, Shotgun Ammo, Napalm Grenades, and First Aid Spray there, but supplies and quantities can vary by difficulty and version; check what is actually available in your run. Gamepressure’s church walkthrough describes the encounter and room, while a GameFAQs walkthrough covers the post-fight route.

Prepare and choose a character
Use Billy as the default fighter
Gamepressure recommends Billy because it describes him as stronger and more resilient than Rebecca, and advises bringing the shotgun. Rebecca can fight the boss under a different setup, but Billy is the safer default if both characters and the weapon are available. This is a recommendation, not a requirement.

- Take the shotgun and its ammunition if available.
- Keep a healing item accessible in case Billy takes damage.
- Do not assume a particular amount of ammunition or healing supplies; the available inventory depends on your difficulty and run.
How to fight the giant bat
- Take a position with a clear view. Stand near the altar or elsewhere in the church where you can see much of the room. The fixed camera can make the flying target hard to track, so adjust your position if the bat is obscured.
- Aim up and fire when it is in range. With Billy and the shotgun, point toward the ceiling and shoot when the large bat comes close enough. The walkthroughs do not establish a guaranteed shot count or hit rate, so conserve ammunition when you can rather than relying on a fixed number of rounds.
- Deal with smaller bats only if they are getting in the way. They arrive shortly after combat begins and can make it harder to aim. If ammunition is tight and they are disrupting your shots, switch to the pistol and remove some; otherwise, keep your attention on the large bat. The smaller bats do not need to be killed to end the fight.
- Try to interrupt the grab and heal when needed. If the large bat grabs your character, it can drop them and cause HP loss. Shoot before the grab completes if you have an opportunity, and heal Billy if his health requires it.
- Keep attacking the large bat. The fight ends when the boss is killed; eliminating the smaller bats is not a victory condition.
Other ammunition options
The GameFAQs walkthrough describes Napalm Grenades as a way to kill the boss quickly, but that option depends on having them available. It is not a required tactic, and the walkthrough recommendations do not provide head-to-head performance testing against the shotgun. Choose based on your loadout, ammunition, and whether the smaller bats are interfering with your aim.

After the fight: reach the roof
Once combat ends, switch to Rebecca and bring her into the church. Use the Hookshot to reach the roof through the opening left by the bat. Make sure the Hookshot is available before relying on this route; the GameFAQs walkthrough describes it as the next progression step.

The encounter tactics above are walkthrough guidance, not firsthand test results. Gamepressure’s church walkthrough was updated in 2016, and the GameFAQs walkthrough is older; neither supports a universal ammunition count, boss health value, or guaranteed fight duration. Capcom provides an official manuals page, but the tactics in this guide come from the walkthroughs rather than an official boss strategy.
