The original 2005 game and the 2023 remake are separate games; ports, HD editions and VR adaptations have their own platform-specific histories and review listings. The clearest score figures available here are 96/100 for the original GameCube and PlayStation 2 releases, as reported by a secondary reference, and 84/100 from 36 critic reviews for Metacritic’s 2011 Resident Evil 4 HD listing. Those figures should not be treated as scores for every edition.
Resident Evil 4 versions and the scores that can be verified
Metacritic attaches a Metascore to a particular listing, platform and set of critic reviews—not to a game across every release. The table separates major releases while distinguishing the few scores available from entries whose release-specific scores are not established here. Release dates and platforms not independently confirmed in the cited sources are identified as unverified rather than filled in by inference.

The 2011 figure applies to the Resident Evil 4 HD listing, not to every HD port or later release. Metacritic’s base game listing and secondary coverage report 96/100 for the GameCube and PlayStation 2 originals, but the available information does not establish a complete platform-by-platform score table. Scores and review totals can change; check the linked listing and record the platform and access date when comparing them.
Which Resident Evil 4 version has the highest Metacritic score?
Among the figures established here, the original GameCube and PlayStation 2 releases are reported at 96/100, while the 2011 HD listing has an 84/100 Metascore based on 36 critic reviews. The 96 figures come from secondary historical coverage and should not be mistaken for a verified, current score matrix across all platforms. A reliable comparison needs the individual Metacritic platform pages, their review counts and the date checked.
#1 Best Overall
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Is the 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake the same game as the original?
No. Capcom calls the 2023 release a remake of the original 2005 title and says it reworks the story and gameplay. PlayStation describes it as retaining the original’s core while modernizing its game feel. It is therefore a distinct game, not simply another port or a higher-resolution edition. Capcom announced it for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a March 24, 2023 launch; PlayStation’s product information also discusses PS4 and PS5 availability.
How do the editions differ?
The release label is a useful starting point, but it does not tell you every practical difference. A port brings the game to another system; an HD re-release updates presentation; a VR adaptation changes the way you play; and a remake reworks the original game. Controls, technical presentation and content can differ between versions, so check the features of the specific platform edition you intend to play.

- Reimagined Story – Resident Evil 4 dials up the original release’s key feelings of loneliness and the fear of enemies blinded by zealotry, while providing more nuanced depictions of the character motivations and relationships that defined the 2005 survival horror icon.
- Original releases: The 2005 GameCube game and PlayStation 2 edition are original-era releases, not the 2023 remake.
- Ports and HD editions: Later releases include PC, Wii, HD versions, Ultimate HD Edition, PS4, Xbox One and Switch editions. The PS4 listing specifically notes 1080p HD and an increased frame rate.
- VR: The Oculus Quest 2 edition is a VR adaptation; its control experience is not equivalent to a conventional controller-based port.
- Remake: The 2023 game reworks story and gameplay while drawing on the original’s core.
What platforms can you play Resident Evil 4 on?
The release history spans GameCube, PlayStation 2, PC, Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 HD releases, Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Oculus Quest 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Apple-platform releases and later VR availability should be checked against current official platform and store listings before treating this as a complete list. Availability can vary by edition and region, and a game’s presence in the series does not guarantee that a particular version remains available digitally or will run on a newer console.
For a purchase or compatibility check, match the exact edition to the system and region you own. PlayStation’s listing, for example, identifies a distinct PS4 release dated August 29, 2016, while its remake page covers the remake’s PS4 and PS5 availability. Do not assume that a PS5 remake listing is the same product as the PS4 port.
