Rest in Peace Windows? Gamers Nexus Tests Gaming Performance on Linux With Bazzite

Linux gaming is now a serious alternative for Steam-focused players, but Gamers Nexus' Bazzite testing does not prove Linux universally beats Windows. Here is what the results mean for GPU buyers and PC gamers.

Windows is not dead, but Linux gaming has crossed an important threshold. In testing published by Gamers Nexus, Bazzite—a Fedora-based, gaming-focused Linux distribution—delivered excellent results across demanding PC games. The most revealing result was not a universal Linux performance victory, however. It was that a slower Radeon card could feel substantially smoother than a much faster GeForce card because of frame-time behavior.

For Steam-focused players, single-player gamers, indie fans, and people building a secondary gaming PC, Bazzite is now a credible Windows alternative. For competitive multiplayer players dependent on unsupported anti-cheat, Windows remains essential. For most people moving from Windows, dual-booting or using a separate SSD is still the safest answer.

The short verdict

  • Linux gaming is viable for many Steam games, single-player releases, indie games, older titles, and some multiplayer games.
  • Bazzite lowers the setup barrier with a curated gaming environment, Steam integration, Proton support, HDR/VRR features, and rollback-oriented updates.
  • AMD is the lower-risk choice for a Linux-first gaming build, although the advantage is not universal.
  • Anti-cheat remains the hard boundary. Some competitive games still require Windows regardless of how well the game itself runs through Proton.
  • Dual-boot or a spare SSD is the best migration strategy for most users.

What Gamers Nexus actually tested

Gamers Nexus published its original video on November 25, 2025, followed by a written article dated December 5, 2025 and updated February 2, 2026. The test used Bazzite, an immutable Fedora-based Linux distribution designed to provide a SteamOS-like gaming experience on broader PC hardware. Bazzite is not SteamOS, and its results should not automatically be treated as representative of Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora Workstation, or every other Linux distribution.

The documented software stack included KDE Plasma 6.4.4, KDE Frameworks 6.17.0, Qt 6.9.2, Wayland, and Proton 10.0-2e. Some Radeon and GeForce cards used earlier experimental Proton builds. That detail matters: Linux gaming performance can change with the kernel, Mesa, NVIDIA driver, Proton release, game patch, compositor, and display protocol.

The hardware included modern discrete GPUs from AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel, with the most notable comparison involving NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090 and AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT. The games included demanding titles such as Black Myth: Wukong, Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Resident Evil 4. Gamers Nexus described the work as exploratory and noted that reliable Linux benchmarking methodology is still developing. It was not a definitive, game-by-game Windows-versus-Linux ranking.

Read the Gamers Nexus test and methodology.

The result that matters: average FPS is not the whole experience

In one Black Myth: Wukong example, the RTX 5090 averaged roughly 9% more frames than the RX 9070 XT. On paper, that makes the GeForce the faster card. Gamers Nexus nevertheless judged the Radeon experience substantially smoother because the NVIDIA card exhibited severe frame-time spikes.

Frame time is the amount of time the GPU takes to produce each frame. When frame times are consistent, motion feels steady. When individual frames take much longer than the surrounding frames, players perceive hitching or stutter—even if the average FPS number looks impressive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is why a useful gaming comparison should consider more than average FPS:

  • Average FPS: the overall rendering rate.
  • 1% lows: a rough indication of how slow the worst sustained moments become.
  • Frame-time consistency: whether frames arrive at regular intervals.
  • Input latency: how quickly controls appear on screen.
  • Shader-compilation stutter: pauses caused when the game or compatibility layer prepares shaders.
  • Reliability: whether the game launches, stays connected, and survives updates.

The lesson is not that the RTX 5090 is bad on Linux or that the RX 9070 XT always beats it. The observed behavior belonged to a particular game, driver, Proton release, and Bazzite configuration. It does show why “Linux is slower” and “Linux is faster” are both too simplistic.

Why AMD looked better in this Bazzite configuration

AMD’s advantage in the test is best understood as a software-stack result, not proof that Radeon hardware is inherently faster. Linux graphics support for AMD relies heavily on open-source kernel and Mesa drivers. NVIDIA’s Linux experience depends more heavily on proprietary drivers and their interaction with Vulkan, Wayland, Gamescope, Proton, and the rest of the desktop stack.

In the specific software combination tested, Radeon cards produced more consistent frame times in the highlighted game while NVIDIA cards showed repeated spikes. That makes AMD an appealing lower-risk option for a Linux-first gaming build, particularly for someone who values driver integration and smooth frame pacing over a particular vendor feature.

There are still reasons to choose NVIDIA. Buyers may prioritize CUDA, specific ray-tracing workloads, DLSS features, or the broadest Windows compatibility. Bazzite’s documentation warns that open-source NVIDIA driver paths have performance and stability limitations compared with official drivers, and that NVIDIA support is less mature than AMD support in some modes, including certain Game Mode configurations.

That is a reason to investigate current support—not a reason to replace an NVIDIA card before trying Bazzite. A Linux-first buyer choosing new hardware should favor AMD when the rest of the requirements are equal, but an existing NVIDIA owner should test the software before spending money on a new GPU.

What “Linux gaming” means in practice

Linux gaming is not one technology. It is a collection of different paths:

Native Linux games

A native Linux game is built for Linux and normally avoids Windows compatibility translation. Native support can be excellent, but major AAA releases increasingly rely on Windows builds instead.

Proton

Proton is Valve’s Steam-integrated compatibility layer, based on Wine and related projects. It translates Windows game behavior and graphics APIs so many Windows titles can run on Linux. Depending on the game, Proton may use technologies such as DXVK or VKD3D-Proton to translate DirectX workloads to Vulkan.

Most Steam games do not require the player to understand those layers. Steam can select a compatibility tool automatically. If a title needs a different version, open the Steam Library, right-click the game, select Properties, open Compatibility, and enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. Test one Proton version at a time rather than changing several settings together.

Non-Steam launchers

Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, and Battle.net games may require tools such as Lutris, Heroic, Bottles, or launcher-specific workarounds. Bazzite supports and integrates with several gaming utilities, but “supported” does not mean every launcher or game will work without configuration. Non-Steam games are usually a more hands-on experience than Steam titles.

Which games are likely to work?

Bazzite is a strong candidate when a library is dominated by:

  • Single-player Steam games.
  • Indie releases.
  • Older Windows games.
  • Co-op games without restrictive anti-cheat.
  • Games with well-established Proton community reports.
  • Titles using well-supported DirectX 11, DirectX 12, or Vulkan rendering paths.

Before installing, check the actual games you play—not just a general compatibility list. Look at recent reports on ProtonDB, the game’s Steam discussions, Bazzite’s gaming documentation, and Are We Anti-Cheat Yet?. ProtonDB is community-maintained, so a high rating is useful evidence rather than a permanent guarantee. A game update, driver release, or Proton change can improve or break compatibility.

Anti-cheat is still the biggest reason to keep Windows

Linux gaming is no longer defined by “nothing works,” but anti-cheat still creates a hard boundary: a game can run perfectly in every technical respect and remain unavailable because its publisher does not permit Proton.

Some anti-cheat systems require Windows kernel integration. Others can support Linux or Proton only when the developer explicitly enables that mode. Compatibility can also change after a game or anti-cheat update. This is especially important for competitive multiplayer players, because a title may launch successfully yet refuse matchmaking or block the account once its anti-cheat system runs.

Do not assume that another Proton version or launch option can solve a publisher-side restriction. If a must-play competitive game is unsupported, Windows is the practical solution.

Where Windows remains the safer platform

Windows remains the better choice for readers who need:

  • Competitive multiplayer games with unsupported or unstable anti-cheat.
  • Adobe and other professional creative applications.
  • Specialized hardware utilities, RGB software, fan-control tools, or peripheral features.
  • Some corporate VPN, security, and device-management software.
  • Particular VR or mixed-reality configurations.
  • Day-one compatibility with every major release.
  • The least surprising experience with NVIDIA’s proprietary ecosystem.

These are not merely comfort issues. A game can have excellent frame rates on Linux and still be unsuitable if voice chat, overlays, a controller utility, a VR headset, or a required launcher fails.

Bazzite versus installing generic Linux

Bazzite’s appeal is that it removes much of the initial assembly work. It offers gaming-focused images, Steam integration, support for alternative launchers, HDR and variable-refresh-rate features, and a maintenance model designed around atomic updates and rollback. Its Fedora Atomic base also makes the system more opinionated than a conventional Linux installation.

That convenience does not eliminate troubleshooting. Some Steam games will not work out of the box, and a user may still need to select a Proton version, inspect logs, adjust launch options, rebuild a shader cache, or wait for a driver and game combination to mature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bazzite also offers a Steam Gaming Mode or Deck-style variant. The installation documentation recommends ordinary desktop images for typical desktop PCs; the Deck/Game Mode variant is aimed primarily at handheld, living-room, and HTPC-style use unless the user specifically wants a console-like interface.

Who should switch?

Player profile Best choice Why
Mostly Steam single-player, indie, or older games Try Bazzite Proton compatibility is often strong, and the gaming-focused setup reduces initial work.
Competitive multiplayer with strict anti-cheat Stay with Windows Publisher support, not hardware performance, determines whether the game is available.
Linux-first new PC build Consider AMD AMD is generally the lower-risk graphics choice for driver integration in Bazzite.
Existing NVIDIA system Test before replacing hardware The Gamers Nexus findings were configuration-specific and do not prove all NVIDIA cards are poor on Linux.
Unsure whether every application works Dual-boot or spare SSD Windows remains available for unsupported games, software, VR, and peripherals.

How to try Bazzite without immediately removing Windows

  1. Back up personal files. Do this before repartitioning or installing to an existing drive.
  2. Choose the right image. The installer asks for the GPU vendor, desktop environment, and whether Steam Gaming Mode is wanted.
  3. Create an installer USB. Bazzite lists Fedora Media Writer as the recommended method.
  4. Boot the USB and test hardware. Check display output, networking, audio, Bluetooth, controllers, and suspend/resume.
  5. Do not benchmark the live session. Bazzite warns that live-session performance is not representative of a proper installation.
  6. Install to a spare SSD or set up dual-boot. A separate drive is often the least disruptive way to experiment.
  7. Install Steam and test must-play games. Verify multiplayer, voice chat, overlays, VR, and peripheral controls—not just whether a game reaches its menu.
  8. Keep Windows until verification is complete. Do not wipe a working Windows installation until the replacement has passed your real-world checklist.

What to do when a game breaks

Bazzite’s atomic design provides rollback capability if a system update introduces a regression. Keep a known-working Proton version available and record the Proton, driver, kernel, game, and launch-option versions whenever troubleshooting.

If a previously working game stops launching, test changes in this order:

  1. Try the previous Proton version.
  2. Try Proton Experimental.
  3. Rebuild or remove the game’s shader cache if the symptoms suggest shader-related stutter.
  4. Remove custom launch options.
  5. Roll back Bazzite if the problem began after a system update.

Avoid changing the driver, Proton version, launch options, and graphics settings simultaneously; otherwise it becomes difficult to identify what fixed or caused the problem. If the issue is an unsupported anti-cheat system, stop looking for Proton tweaks and use Windows for that title.

So, is Windows dead?

No. The Gamers Nexus results show something more useful than a sensational operating-system replacement story. Linux, particularly a gaming-focused distribution such as Bazzite, can now provide excellent performance and smooth gameplay for a substantial category of PC games. In the highlighted Black Myth: Wukong result, frame-time consistency mattered more than the highest average FPS, and AMD looked especially strong in that Bazzite configuration.

But performance is only one part of a gaming platform. Anti-cheat, launchers, VR, professional software, hardware utilities, and day-one compatibility still give Windows a decisive advantage for many players.

Linux has crossed the threshold from “interesting project” to “credible gaming platform.” It has not crossed the threshold to “Windows replacement for everyone.”
