The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is a compact Android handheld that makes PSP and older PlayStation-era games especially appealing to revisit. It can also run many PS2 games, but performance depends on the title, emulator, and settings; it is not a guarantee of full-speed play across the PS2 library. Its 4.7-inch screen and portable design are part of the appeal, while Android setup and small interface text are meaningful trade-offs.

What the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is—and what it isn’t

Retroid released the Pocket 4 Pro in January 2024. It is an Android handheld built around a MediaTek Dimensity 1100 platform, intended for gaming through Android apps and emulators rather than native PlayStation compatibility. Emulator availability, configuration, and game compatibility all affect what works. Retroid’s product page lists the Pro alongside the less powerful base Pocket 4, so check the model name carefully when comparing specifications or shopping. iFixit’s device reference identifies the Pro as model D1100.

Pocket 4 Pro specifications

Feature Retroid Pocket 4 Pro specification
Processor 4×A78 at 2.6GHz plus 4×A55 at 2.0GHz
Graphics G77 MC9 at 836MHz
Memory and storage 8GB LPDDR4x RAM; 128GB UFS 3.1 storage plus TF card slot
Operating system Android 13
Display 4.7-inch touchscreen, 750×1334 resolution, 60Hz; 500-nit specification
Battery 5000mAh
Controls and cooling 3D Hall-effect sticks, analog L2/R2 triggers, active cooling
Wireless Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2

These specifications are from Retroid’s product listing. The listing includes selectable Pocket 4 and Pocket 4 Pro variants; the figures above refer to the Pro.

How well does it handle PlayStation games?

The strongest case for the Pocket 4 Pro is PSP and earlier systems. An independent review synthesis describes PS1 and PSP, along with N64 and Dreamcast, as full-speed in its listed configuration. Retroid’s hosted review also presents PSP at two to three times internal resolution as a practical use. These are reviewer assessments rather than guarantees for every game, emulator build, or setting. The independent review synthesis and Retroid’s hosted review offer broader context.

PS2: many playable games, not a universal compatibility promise

PS2 emulation is within reach, and reviewers describe most PS2 games as playable, but the sources do not provide comprehensive title-by-title results or specific PS2 frame rates. A demanding game may need different settings or may not perform acceptably. Treat compatibility lists as starting points, not as a promise that your own game will run smoothly.

Other later systems

The manufacturer-hosted review describes Wii and 3DS results as variable, with frame-rate limits or graphical errors depending on the game and emulator. The independent synthesis characterizes GameCube and Wii as playable without publishing specific frame-rate figures, and says 3D Switch titles can be choppy. Retroid’s reviewer also cautions that Switch compatibility is narrower on this MediaTek/Mali platform than on some Qualcomm devices with open-source driver support. For a handheld focused on PSP or PS2, these are secondary capabilities—not a sound reason to expect broad Switch support.

Screen, controls, and portability

The 4.7-inch, 750×1334 display is small enough to support a compact handheld, but Android menus and text can feel cramped. That is a reviewer’s usability assessment, not a universal measured limitation. Retroid specifies a 60Hz refresh rate and 500 nits; the manufacturer-hosted reviewer measured about 695.6 nits maximum brightness and reported 90% DCI-P3 coverage. Those measurements belong to that review and should not be treated as standardized guarantees for every unit.

The manufacturer-hosted reviewer reports dimensions of 184.8×82.6×15.8mm and a weight of about 261g before that reviewer’s screen-protector estimate. They found the size and weight comfortable compared with larger handhelds, while noting that people who stream games may prefer a larger screen. Retroid lists Hall-effect sticks and analog L2/R2 triggers, useful features for games that benefit from analog input; they do not establish game performance. The reviewer praised the layout and stick feel, while noting a printing-clarity issue on one colorway.

Battery life, cooling, and streaming

The 5000mAh battery has no official runtime figure on Retroid’s cited product page. In the manufacturer-hosted review, the reviewer estimated roughly 4–5 hours under one relatively light workload and roughly 2.5–3 hours in a demanding Switch test, based on observed current draw and battery capacity. These are estimates for those particular scenarios, not standardized battery tests or a promise of runtime for other games.

Retroid lists active cooling, which is relevant to sustained workloads but does not guarantee a particular frame rate. The same reviewer tested Moonlight streaming from a desktop PC and reported about 4ms average network latency and 16.51ms average decode latency in HEVC mode, with roughly a 30–40ms display-to-display difference. Those figures describe one setup and are not a general latency expectation.

Android setup and expandable storage

Android 13 gives the Pocket 4 Pro access to Android apps, but emulation requires third-party software and configuration. Retroid’s hosted review says its software integrates a curated selection of emulators, which may reduce initial searching for beginners. That does not mean every emulator is preinstalled, setup is automatic, or game content is included. The cited sources do not establish a guaranteed upgrade to a later major Android version. The independent review notes that Android-only operation may be a drawback for players who prefer a dedicated Linux retro-gaming system.

The 128GB internal storage and TF card slot make expandable storage an option if a game collection needs more room. The available product information does not specify a recommended card capacity, speed class, or brand.

Is the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro still worth buying?

That depends on the price and stock you can verify, as well as the systems you want to play. Retroid’s product page displayed a $159 listing marked “Sold out” when accessed on October 8, 2026; that is a dated snapshot, not a current offer or lasting price. Check the current listing and confirm that it is the Pro rather than the base Pocket 4 before buying. No current third-party offer or warranty terms are established here.

For a buyer whose priority is PSP and older systems, the Pocket 4 Pro’s performance profile and analog controls make it a compelling compact Android option. For PS2, expect a game-by-game experience rather than blanket compatibility. If a larger screen, simpler dedicated operating system, or dependable later-system emulation matters more, compare those needs directly before choosing.
