How much does the fun depend on figuring things out?
A great deal. Animal Well rewards you for treating its objects and surroundings as parts of a puzzle system. An item may be useful in more than one situation, and an obstacle that first seems like a dead end can become legible once you understand more about the world. The satisfaction is in making those connections yourself, rather than being led through a chain of explicit instructions.
This makes it a strong fit if you like experimentation and unguided exploration. It is a less natural fit if you want steady combat, frequent narrative explanation, or a clear marker for every next step. The game asks you to tolerate uncertainty and to try possibilities without knowing in advance which observation will matter.
Can you stop after the first ending?
Yes. The first ending marks the end of a main journey, not a demand to uncover every secret. The official site describes Animal Well as a puzzle box with multiple layers, and an interview with Basso explains that the first layer leads to an ending, followed by a new area and further mysteries. Those deeper layers are best understood as optional rewards for curiosity. If you are content with the journey to the first ending, you can stop there; if the world has left you wondering what else is hidden, there is more to investigate. Basso told GamesRadar+ that he wanted “another layer beside what you are doing, in the background, to tease you” with the sense that more is there. That is an invitation to keep looking, not a completion requirement.

Should you play without guides?
Start without them if solving things independently is part of the appeal, but do not turn that preference into a rule. Basso’s release message encourages players to find a small group of friends, avoid looking up secrets until they reach their own limit, and then compare discoveries with the wider community. In practice, decide what kind of help preserves your enjoyment. You might trade observations with a friend, ask for a nudge rather than a full solution, or look something up when being stuck has stopped feeling rewarding. Animal Well’s later secrets can be unusually obscure; there is no need to prove you can solve every one unaided.
