There is no single best roguelike for every player: the right pick depends on whether you want fast action, platforming, deckbuilding, or procedural shooting—and on the platform and edition you own. This shortlist focuses on those distinct play styles, with platform claims limited to the store listings cited here.

How to choose a roguelike

Players use roguelike in different ways. Some reserve it for traditional games with stricter rules; many current listings and recommendations also use roguelite for run-based games built around repeated attempts, changing encounters, and some persistent progress. The games below span that broader usage rather than claiming to represent one definitive genre test.

Start with the kind of play you want. Reflex-driven combat, careful turn-based decisions, platforming, and third-person shooting feel very different even when each game structures play around changing runs. Also check the exact platform edition: a title’s appearance in one store or catalog does not establish availability on every console generation or in every region.

Best roguelikes by play style

Game Best fit What changes between attempts What persists or carries forward Platform evidence
Hades Fast action with an unfolding story Challenges, story discoveries, and combinations of Olympian powers vary across playthroughs. Supergiant describes persistent story progression; the cited sources do not itemize a complete set of mechanical unlocks. Supergiant describes the game as a rogue-like dungeon crawler, and Steam lists it for PC. [Supergiant Games; Steam]
Dead Cells Action-platforming and branching exploration Runs take you through branching paths and levels, with exploration and combat at the center. Death ends a run, while unlocks and progress such as paths, levels, mutations, abilities, and weapons can carry between attempts. Steam lists it for PC and Xbox lists the game. Confirm the current edition in your regional store. [Steam; Xbox]
Slay the Spire Turn-based planning and deckbuilding You build a deck, face encounters, and find relics over the course of a run. The cited listing describes the run’s deckbuilding and relics, but does not specify a full persistence system. Steam lists it for PC; Nintendo’s roguelike catalog includes it. Check the Nintendo store page for the precise edition and console compatibility. [Steam; Nintendo]
Returnal Procedural third-person action and shooting The world, items, and challenges change across cycles, making each expedition different. PlayStation’s description emphasizes repeated cycles after defeat; the cited page does not give a complete inventory of what persists. PlayStation presents Returnal as a PS5 game. [PlayStation]

Which game fits your preferred kind of run?

Choose Hades for action tied to story

Hades pairs quick dungeon-crawling combat with narrative progression. Supergiant says playthroughs vary in their challenges, Olympian power combinations, and story discoveries, so repeated attempts advance more than a combat build. Its studio page calls it a rogue-lite; the studio’s Hades FAQ, updated July 16, 2025, describes it as a rogue-like dungeon crawler. Those are the developer’s genre descriptions, not a universal boundary for the term.

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Choose it if you want action and a continuing story in the same loop. Its official site is Supergiant Games’ Hades page, and its PC listing is on Steam.

Choose Dead Cells for platforming and carried unlocks

Dead Cells is an action-platformer with Metroidvania elements, interconnected exploration, and branching paths. Its Steam description explicitly uses the word roguelite and describes permadeath alongside progress that can carry forward, including paths, levels, mutations, abilities, and weapons. That distinction matters if you want failure to reset a run without erasing every longer-term unlock.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - US Version
  • New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
  • Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
  • Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
  • Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer

Steam lists the PC version, and Xbox has a Dead Cells listing. Store availability, prices, and subscription inclusion can change, so check the relevant regional page for the edition you intend to play.

Choose Slay the Spire for deliberate strategy

Slay the Spire swaps real-time combat for turn-based deck decisions. Its Steam listing describes a single-player deckbuilder that combines card games and roguelikes: you craft a deck, face encounters, and discover relics during a run. That makes it the clearest pick here if you prefer evaluating choices over testing reflexes.

It appears on Steam, and Nintendo includes it in its roguelike game catalog. The catalog is a useful lead, not a substitute for checking the exact regional listing, Switch generation, and compatible edition.

Choose Returnal for changing expeditions and shooting

Returnal is the option here for third-person action built around procedural cycles. PlayStation describes a world that changes from cycle to cycle, with shifting items and evolving challenges; defeat sends you back to try again. Its official page presents the game for PS5: check PlayStation’s Returnal page for the edition and regional availability relevant to you.

Other catalog-listed games to investigate

Nintendo’s roguelike catalog also lists The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ and Risk of Rain 2. That establishes their presence in the catalog, but the source used here does not provide enough detail to compare their mechanics, multiplayer support, or other platform editions. Check the individual listing before choosing one, especially if you need a specific Switch generation or compatible edition.

Check platform and edition before buying

  • PC: The cited Steam listings establish PC store presence for Hades, Dead Cells, and Slay the Spire. They do not establish current prices or availability in every region.
  • Switch: Nintendo’s catalog includes Slay the Spire, The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, and Risk of Rain 2. Verify the individual listing for generation, compatibility, and region.
  • Xbox: The cited Xbox listing supports Dead Cells. Check the store directly for current availability and any subscription terms.
  • PlayStation: PlayStation’s cited page presents Returnal as a PS5 game. Confirm the relevant regional edition and current availability on the store.

These listings are evidence for the specific games and platforms named, not proof that every recommendation is available on PC, Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. Store catalogs and subscription offers can change. The sources cited here do not provide a consistent statistical dataset for comparing game quality, so the recommendations are organized by player fit rather than review counts or a numerical ranking.
