Review: Thousand Hells Feels More Random Than Six Ages

Thousand Hells feels more volatile because randomized encounters and dice checks put uncertainty up close. Six Ages also varies, but through a longer clan simulation.

Thousand Hells: The Underworld Heists can feel more random than Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind, but not because one game is random and the other is not. Both vary their stories. The difference is where uncertainty lands: Thousand Hells puts it close to the player, in the mix of party traits and dice checks that decide short, dangerous missions; Six Ages uses simulation-driven events to shape a longer clan story. That distinction makes Thousand Hells the more volatile-feeling game, rather than statistically “more random.”

What “more random” means in these two games

There is no published head-to-head measure of randomness for the games, so “more random” is best understood as a judgment about play feel, not a numerical result. Both games use systems that make playthroughs differ. Thousand Hells foregrounds randomized narrative assembly and uncertain checks; Six Ages describes procedural generation and simulation-driven scenes.

The practical distinction is how that variation meets the player. In Thousand Hells, a four-hero party brings traits to dynamic encounters, and dice resolve challenges. In Six Ages, the player leads a clan through encounters and decisions whose effects build across a multi-generational story. The first makes uncertainty feel immediate; the second embeds it in a wider strategic simulation.

How uncertainty works in Thousand Hells

Randomized story pieces and party checks

Its official Steam listing describes four heroes, dynamic narrative encounters, multiple paths through encounters, changing helpers, and an anthology of mythic journeys.

Designer David Dunham told PC Gamer that the game assembles story elements in changing combinations: “We sometimes call it a kaleidoscopic game, because lots of pieces come together and they’re randomized.” He also called it “a story generator.” That describes variation in what the player encounters, not a claim that every outcome is arbitrary.

Challenges add a second kind of uncertainty. PC Gamer’s launch review describes traits as tiles used in turn-based trials: a better match between a trait and a challenge improves the roll. The player can prepare by choosing relevant party skills, but the available traits and the roll still matter.

Why the odds can feel hard to read

PC Gamer’s reviewer found that badly timed trait availability could make a run feel doomed and that defeats could be brutal. That is one reviewer’s account, not a guarantee of how every run will go. It does, however, help explain why the game may feel more volatile than a strategy game whose uncertainty plays out across a longer chain of decisions.

In September 2026, Kitfox acknowledged player concerns about difficulty and limited information for character actions and dice rolls in a Steam Community update. The publisher said it understood that more in-game information could ease frustration, while also wanting to preserve risk and uncertainty. That is a dated statement, not confirmation of the game’s current state; later updates may have changed how clearly it communicates checks.

How Six Ages uses variation differently

Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind, also developed by A Sharp and published by Kitfox Games, released on Steam on October 17, 2019. Its Steam listing describes a storybook strategy game about leading a clan, managing resources, making long-term decisions, and navigating more than 400 interactive story scenes. The listing says scene appearances and outcomes are driven by deep simulation systems.

A Sharp’s official announcement says procedural generation makes each playthrough different. So Six Ages is not a fixed, non-random counterexample to Thousand Hells. Rather, its variation is framed around clan circumstances and interconnected choices over generations. Individual encounters matter, but their context is the evolving state of the clan, not just the immediate success or failure of a short mission.

What the difference means when choosing between them

What to compare Thousand Hells Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind
Where variation shows up Randomized narrative assembly, changing encounters and helpers, plus dice-based trials. Procedurally varied playthroughs and simulation-driven clan scenes and outcomes.
Player preparation Party traits can be matched to challenges to improve a roll, according to PC Gamer’s review; the available options and check information may make the odds feel unclear. Clan leadership includes resource management and long-term decisions; the listing does not specify a shared numerical odds system for comparison.
Cost of failure The official listing describes life-or-death choices and persistent consequences, including risk of injury; PC Gamer’s reviewer found some defeats brutal. The listing emphasizes long-term consequences for clan decisions; it does not provide a directly comparable failure measure.
Intended scale The 2026 product listing says a run takes about an hour; Dunham told PC Gamer he aimed for a complete story of roughly one or two hours. The official listing frames it as a multi-generational clan tale.

The figures above describe different kinds of content and pacing. A Sharp and Kitfox’s 2026 Thousand Hells listing advertises more than 280 unique dynamic narrative encounters, while the Six Ages listing advertises more than 400 interactive story scenes. Those counts are not a like-for-like comparison: the listings do not establish that an encounter and a scene represent the same unit of content.

Verdict: a more volatile run, not a randomness contest

Thousand Hells is the better fit if you want compact, repeatable mythic missions where party composition, story variation, and dice checks combine into uncertain outcomes. Preparation can help, but the game’s risk is part of its design, and PC Gamer’s review and Kitfox’s September 2026 response show why unclear odds can make that risk feel frustrating.

Choose Six Ages if you want variation to unfold through a broader clan simulation, with resource management and decisions carrying across a generational story. Calling Thousand Hells “more random” is fair as a description of its immediate, volatile feel; it is not evidence that Six Ages lacks randomness or that one game has been proved more random by a common measurement.
