Identify the problem before changing settings
“Bad mic quality” can mean several different things. The symptom usually points to the right troubleshooting branch:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Symptom | Likely causes |
|---|---|
| No microphone detected | Mute control, retracted boom, permissions, wrong input, USB or wireless connection, driver, or Sonar routing |
| Very quiet voice | Low input level, poor microphone position, a wireless problem, or the boom being too far away |
| Muffled or dull voice | Poor placement, an obstruction, excessive noise reduction, an aggressive noise gate, or duplicate processing |
| Robotic or metallic voice | Overactive AI cancellation, multiple noise suppressors, wireless interference, or an application codec/network issue |
| Clipping or distortion | Input level or gain is too high, or compression is too aggressive |
| Keyboard noise | Mic placement, room noise, insufficient noise reduction, or a missing noise gate |
| Words are cut off | Noise-gate thresholds or automatic input sensitivity are too high |
| Echo or self-monitoring | Sidetone, duplicate monitoring, speaker feedback, or duplicated Discord/OBS routing |
| Delay | Sonar virtual-device processing, Discord processing, wireless latency, or stream routing |
The key diagnostic question is whether the microphone sounds bad everywhere or only in one application. A bad recording in Windows points toward placement, level, hardware, drivers, or wireless connectivity. A clean Windows recording but poor Discord audio points toward Discord’s device or processing settings. A clean Discord signal but poor OBS result usually indicates an OBS source or monitoring problem.

1. Check the headset itself first
- Extend the microphone boom fully. Retractable microphones may ship pushed into the headset. Slide the boom outward into its operating position. Some Nova manuals specifically instruct users to extend the microphone before use (SteelSeries microphone instructions).
- Turn hardware mute off. Check the headset’s mute button and indicator. A muted microphone cannot be repaired with Windows or Sonar settings.
- Remove obstructions. Check for shipping film, debris, a damaged windscreen, or anything covering the microphone opening.
- Position the boom beside the corner of your mouth. Keep it close enough for a strong signal, but slightly to the side rather than directly in front of your lips. This reduces breath blasts and popping.
- Reseat detachable microphones. If your model uses a removable microphone, disconnect and firmly reconnect it.
- Test the connection. For USB or wireless models, try another USB port. Connect a wireless transmitter directly to the PC instead of an unpowered hub. If supported, compare wired and wireless operation and check the battery.
Do not compensate for a badly positioned or damaged microphone simply by raising gain. More gain also raises background noise and can cause clipping.
2. Confirm Windows detects the right microphone
Use Windows as the baseline before tuning Discord, OBS, or Sonar.
- Open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Allow access for desktop applications.
- Open Settings → System → Sound → Input.
- Select the physical SteelSeries microphone for a direct test. If you are already using Sonar, the processed choice will normally be SteelSeries Sonar – Microphone.
- Speak and watch the input meter. It should respond consistently without immediately reaching the maximum.
- Make a short recording with Windows Sound Recorder or the built-in microphone test.
Set the input level conservatively. Raise it until normal speech is clearly audible, then stop before loud words clip. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide also recommends checking permissions, reconnecting the device, and reviewing drivers when Windows fails to detect a microphone.
If Windows does not detect it
- Disconnect and reconnect the headset or wireless transmitter.
- Restart SteelSeries GG and the application using the microphone.
- Restart Windows.
- Try another USB port, preferably with the transmitter or headset connected directly to the computer.
- Check Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers and Audio inputs and outputs.
- Test the headset on another computer if possible.
If another computer also fails to detect the physical microphone, the likely problem is the headset, cable, transmitter, USB connection, or driver—not Discord.
3. Configure SteelSeries GG and Sonar without overprocessing
SteelSeries Sonar is a Windows software layer. SteelSeries currently lists compatibility with Windows 10 RS5 or newer and describes Sonar as a free download. It can work with any headset or microphone connected to the PC, not only SteelSeries hardware (official Sonar download).
- Install or update SteelSeries GG.
- Open GG and choose Sonar.
- Confirm Sonar is switched ON.
- Open the Microphone tab.
- Select the actual physical SteelSeries microphone as the hardware input.
- Adjust the microphone level while speaking normally.
- Test the result before opening Discord or OBS.
Sonar must remain active in GG for its microphone enhancements to work. If Sonar is on in an application but disabled in GG, the expected processing will not be applied.
What the microphone controls do
- Noise Reduction: Reduces steady background sounds such as room noise, keyboard clicks, and mouse movement.
- Impact Noise Reduction: Targets sharper mechanical sounds, particularly keystrokes.
- Noise Gate: Stops transmission when the signal falls below a threshold. Too much gate removes quiet syllables and word endings.
- Automatic Noise Gate: Adjusts the threshold dynamically, but can still mistake quiet speech for noise.
- Compressor: Narrows the difference between quiet and loud speech. Excessive compression can sound unnatural and bring up background noise.
- ClearCast AI Noise Cancellation: Applies stronger artificial-intelligence-based background-noise reduction. It can create metallic or underwater artifacts when pushed too far.
- Microphone EQ: Can improve intelligibility. Too much high-frequency boost adds hiss or harsh “s” sounds.
- Microphone volume or gain: Raises signal strength. Too much produces clipping and distortion.
SteelSeries warns that high noise-gate, automatic-gate, and noise-reduction settings can make speech unclear or distorted, especially in a quiet room (Sonar settings guidance).

A safe starting configuration
There is no universal “best” Sonar preset because the right setting depends on your room, voice, keyboard, headset, and microphone position. Start with processing off or at low intensity, then add only what solves the problem:
- Record the same 10–15 seconds of speech before changing anything.
- Add a small amount of Noise Reduction if keyboard or room noise is audible.
- Use a low noise-gate threshold in a quiet room. If words lose their first or last syllables, lower the threshold or disable the gate.
- Add moderate compression only if your speech level varies substantially.
- If your voice becomes metallic, robotic, or underwater, reduce AI and noise processing before raising gain.
- If speech clips, lower the input level or gain.
- Compare each change using the same recording.
Changing one control at a time makes it possible to identify the setting that helped—or caused the new problem.
4. Fix Discord microphone quality
For a normal Sonar setup, open Discord → User Settings → Voice & Video and use:
- Input Device:
SteelSeries Sonar - Microphone - Output Device:
SteelSeries Sonar - Chat
Inside Sonar, assign your physical headset as the output device for the relevant channel. Check Discord’s input and output volumes as well as the input meter.
Do not stack Sonar ClearCast AI and Discord noise suppression
Choose one primary noise-processing system while diagnosing the signal:
- Use Sonar ClearCast AI and turn Discord’s noise suppression off; or
- Use Discord’s noise suppression and leave ClearCast AI off.
SteelSeries specifically warns that using both can interfere with the signal or make speech sound overprocessed (SteelSeries’ Discord setup guide). Discord also recommends disabling Noise Suppression temporarily as a diagnostic step in its voice and video troubleshooting guide.
If Discord cuts off quiet speech, review its input sensitivity and test with automatic sensitivity disabled or adjusted. If the voice is delayed or distorted only when Sonar is selected, switch Discord temporarily to the physical microphone. A clean direct signal with a bad Sonar signal identifies Sonar routing or processing as the problem.

5. Prevent echo and doubled audio in OBS
Streaming adds several separate paths: the microphone, your personal headset monitoring, Discord chat, game audio, and the stream output. Treat them as separate signals.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →SteelSeries’ current streaming guidance uses Sonar for Streamers and the SteelSeries Sonar – Stream device for the stream mix (Sonar streaming setup).
- Do not monitor the microphone in both Sonar and OBS.
- Do not add the same microphone separately if it is already included in the Sonar stream mix.
- Check that OBS is not capturing both SteelSeries Sonar – Stream and a separate microphone source containing the same signal.
- If you do not want to hear yourself, avoid sending the microphone to the personal mix.
- Temporarily disable duplicate noise suppression in Sonar, Discord, OBS, and other audio tools while diagnosing.
- If Discord screen sharing creates an echo, review its stream-audio sharing option and Sonar’s routing.
A doubled voice usually means the same signal is being captured twice, not that the microphone capsule suddenly became defective.
6. Targeted fixes for common symptoms
Quiet voice
Extend and reposition the boom first. Then check the Windows input level, the Sonar microphone level, and Discord’s input volume. Raise gain only after the microphone is correctly positioned. If the signal remains quiet in every application and on another computer, suspect the microphone, cable, transmitter, or headset hardware.
Muffled, dull, or underwater voice
Move the microphone beside the mouth and check for obstructions. Reduce Noise Reduction, ClearCast AI, and the noise gate. Disable Discord noise suppression if Sonar is processing the signal. Excessive processing often causes more muffling than it solves.
Robotic or metallic voice
Turn down or disable AI cancellation first. Make sure Discord and Sonar are not both suppressing noise. Then test the physical microphone directly. If the direct signal is clean but the Sonar signal is robotic, the issue is processing or virtual routing. If only wireless mode sounds robotic, test the transmitter, battery, USB port, and wired mode where available.
Clipping or distortion
Lower Windows input volume or Sonar gain before changing the compressor. Ask someone to listen while you speak at normal and loud volume. The input meter should not remain pinned at maximum. A compressor cannot repair an already overloaded input.

Keyboard and mouse noise
Move the boom closer to your mouth so your voice is stronger relative to the keyboard. Add only enough Noise Reduction or Impact Noise Reduction to reduce the unwanted sound. A low noise gate can silence the microphone between words, but a high gate may cut off speech. Mechanical noise cannot always be removed without affecting voice quality.
Voice cuts out
Lower or disable the noise gate and automatic noise gate. Also check Discord’s input sensitivity. Quiet speakers and soft word endings are the first sounds aggressive gates remove.
Recommended Free Tools
Echo or hearing yourself
Check sidetone, Sonar personal-mix routing, OBS monitoring, Discord monitoring, and speaker volume. Use headphones rather than speakers. In OBS, make sure the microphone is not monitored twice and is not present both as an independent source and inside the Sonar stream mix.
Delay
Switch temporarily to the physical microphone in Windows or Discord. If the delay disappears, Sonar or another virtual audio path is responsible. Also test with Discord processing and OBS monitoring disabled. Direct physical input is usually the simplest low-complexity diagnostic path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Bypass Sonar when it causes the problem
Sonar is useful, but it is not mandatory. To isolate it, select the physical SteelSeries microphone directly in Windows → Settings → System → Sound → Input, then select that same physical device in Discord or OBS. Make a short recording.
Interpret the result this way:
- Direct input is clean; Sonar input is bad: Sonar processing or virtual-device routing is the likely cause. Leave Sonar off while troubleshooting or use the direct device.
- Both are bad: Check placement, Windows level, wireless or USB connection, drivers, and hardware.
- Neither is detected: Focus on permissions, ports, transmitter, cable, drivers, and cross-device testing.
Using the direct microphone sacrifices Sonar’s centralized routing and enhancements, but it removes a software dependency and can reduce delay or compatibility problems.

Sonar is a Windows PC software layer. Its effects do not automatically become a console-wide microphone enhancement system. On Xbox or PlayStation, use the headset’s hardware controls, console audio settings, and model-specific SteelSeries device options where supported. If the microphone is bad only on console, Sonar is not the relevant fix. SteelSeries’ acoustic-system information explains the distinction (SteelSeries Arctis Nova acoustic system).

Software also cannot turn every headset microphone into a studio microphone. It can improve level consistency, routing, and background-noise control, but it cannot fully correct a damaged capsule, severe wireless interference, poor acoustic placement, or a microphone with inherently limited bandwidth.
If the microphone remains poor after correct placement, Windows testing, direct-device testing, and a second-computer test, replacement may be justified. Consider a replacement cable or transmitter when those components fail. Consider a different headset or a dedicated USB microphone when the headset microphone itself is the limiting factor. A dedicated microphone may offer better potential voice quality, but it needs suitable placement, a stand or boom arm, room-noise control, monitoring, and additional desk space. It is not automatically better in a noisy room.
Diagnostic decision tree
- No meter movement in Windows: check mute, boom position, permissions, USB/wireless connection, ports, drivers, and hardware.
- Windows recording is bad: fix placement and input level, then test direct hardware operation on another computer.
- Windows recording is good but Discord is bad: select the correct Discord device and disable duplicate processing.
- Discord is good but OBS is bad: review OBS sources, monitoring, Sonar Stream routing, and duplicate capture.
- Direct microphone is good but Sonar is bad: reduce processing or bypass Sonar.
- Only wireless mode is bad: inspect battery, transmitter placement, USB port, interference, firmware, and wired operation.
- Only console use is bad: troubleshoot the console and headset hardware path; Sonar is not involved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does SteelSeries Sonar work with non-SteelSeries microphones?
Yes. SteelSeries describes Sonar as working with any headset or audio device connected to a Windows PC, although results still depend on the microphone, room, placement, and processing settings.
Should Discord noise suppression be enabled with Sonar ClearCast AI?
Not while troubleshooting. Choose one primary system: Sonar ClearCast AI or Discord noise suppression. Running both can create artifacts or overprocessed speech.
Can software fix a poor headset microphone?
Software can improve routing, level consistency, and background-noise control, but it cannot fully repair a damaged microphone, severe wireless interference, poor placement, or inherently limited microphone hardware.
Why does my SteelSeries microphone work in Windows but not Discord?
Discord is probably using the wrong input device, lacks permission, or is applying conflicting voice processing. Check User Settings → Voice & Video, compare the physical microphone with SteelSeries Sonar – Microphone, and test with Discord noise suppression disabled.
Does Sonar improve microphone quality on Xbox or PlayStation?
No. Sonar is a Windows PC software layer. Console users must rely on the headset’s hardware controls, console settings, and supported model-specific device options.
