“ The program can’t start because rewire.dll is missing from your computer.”

You may instead see “The code execution cannot proceed because rewire.dll was not found,” “Error loading rewire.dll,” “Unable to open ReWire subsystem,” or “ReWire system not installed.” The message can also report that rewire.dll is not designed to run on Windows or that ReWire installation failed because access to a file or directory was denied.

The 60-second answer

rewire.dll is the ReWire audio component associated with Propellerhead Software products, including ReBirth RB-338. It is not a Windows system DLL and should not be downloaded from a random DLL website or copied into System32.

The safest repair is to identify the audio application that installed ReWire, then repair or reinstall that application from its original installer, official vendor account, or installation media. Close every DAW and ReWire device first, restart Windows, and check whether antivirus software quarantined the file.

If the application is an older Reason, ReBirth, or DAW installation, also check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility. ReWire requires the host and device to use matching architecture.

What is rewire.dll

The internal description of rewire.dll is ReWire. ReWire was Propellerhead Software’s audio and MIDI synchronization technology for connecting a host application, such as a DAW, to another compatible audio application.

ReWire could be installed or used by more than one product. ReBirth RB-338 is an important historical association, but the presence of rewire.dll alone does not prove which program owns the copy on your computer. Reason and compatible DAWs could also install or use ReWire components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters because reinstalling a random DLL does not repair the application that needs it. A missing file may be the result of:

  • An incomplete ReBirth, Reason, or DAW installation
  • A failed uninstall or application update
  • Antivirus quarantine
  • A cleanup utility removing a shared component
  • A damaged or overwritten ReWire installation
  • A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
  • Multiple old ReWire copies conflicting
  • A ReWire feature that the current application no longer supports
  • A missing dependency of rewire.dll
  • A counterfeit or damaged DLL

ReWire is legacy technology. It was deprecated, and current Reason releases no longer include it. Reason 11 and later use the Reason Rack Plugin instead of ReWire. If you need to open an old ReWire project, you may need an older compatible Reason and DAW installation rather than a current installer.

Find the application that owns the error

Before repairing anything, determine which program is calling rewire.dll.

Check the error window

Look at the title bar and the text around the error. The application name may identify ReBirth, Reason, Cubase, Ableton Live, FL Studio, REAPER, Pro Tools, Max, or another DAW.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error appears immediately after starting a DAW, that DAW may be attempting to load a ReWire device. If it appears while starting Reason or ReBirth, that application may be missing or unable to replace its ReWire component.

Check recent changes

Ask what changed immediately before the error appeared:

  • Was the audio application updated or reinstalled?
  • Was it moved to another drive or another PC?
  • Was an antivirus alert shown?
  • Did a cleanup or uninstall tool run?
  • Did a 32-bit application get replaced with a 64-bit version?
  • Was another DAW installed or removed?
  • Did the problem begin after a failed installation?

The answer usually identifies the correct repair path. Do not start with Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or Windows driver updates unless a separate error specifically names those components.

Inspect the file if a copy exists

If Windows can find a copy of rewire.dll, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The General tab for its location.
  2. The Details tab for the description and version information.
  3. The Digital Signatures tab, if present.
  4. The signing publisher and signature status.

An expected location is normally inside the owning application’s installation area or a vendor-managed shared application directory. A copy with no trustworthy provenance in a temporary folder, download folder, or unexpected system location deserves suspicion.

Do not assume that a file in System32 is a Windows component. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory and SysWOW64 is used for many 32-bit system components, but neither directory is a safe source for an application DLL.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning audio application

This is the most likely and safest fix.

Use the application’s repair option

Some installers provide Repair, Modify, Verify files, or Verify integrity.

  1. Close the DAW, Reason, ReBirth, and every other audio application.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Open the application’s installer or launcher.
  4. Choose Repair, Verify files, or the equivalent option.
  5. Allow the installer to restore the application’s original files.
  6. Restart Windows again.
  7. Launch the same application that displayed the error.

If the program starts and the ReWire device becomes available, the repair worked. Test the project that originally failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uninstall and reinstall from a legitimate source

If repair is unavailable or fails:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  4. Find ReBirth, Reason, the affected DAW, or the other application named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu or the application entry.
  6. Choose Uninstall.
  7. Follow the vendor’s uninstaller.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Download the installer from the vendor account or use the original installation media.
  10. Install the same product edition and architecture required by the project.
  11. Restart Windows.
  12. Start the host DAW first, then test the ReWire device if that is how the application requires it to be opened.

Use the vendor’s installer rather than copying a replacement file into an application folder. The installer should place the correct ReWire component and any related files together.

If the installer reports that access was denied, close all DAWs and temporarily pause antivirus protection only during the trusted installation, if your security policy permits it. Re-enable protection immediately afterward.

What success looks like

A successful repair normally produces one of these results:

  • The application opens without the missing-file message.
  • The DAW detects the ReWire device.
  • The ReWire subsystem opens without an installation error.
  • The old project loads, subject to compatibility limits.
  • The application’s installer completes without an access-denied message.

If the reinstall succeeds but the error remains, continue with the architecture and antivirus checks below. The problem may be an incompatible host or a stale copy being loaded from another location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Match 32-bit and 64-bit architecture

A 32-bit ReWire host requires a 32-bit ReWire device. A 64-bit host generally requires a compatible 64-bit device. Installing a file with the correct name but the wrong architecture can produce a missing, bad-image, or unable-to-load error.

Windows itself can be 64-bit while the audio software is 32-bit. Do not use the Windows edition alone to decide which ReWire build is correct.

Check the application architecture

Look at the application’s documentation, installer options, or executable location. You can also inspect the executable:

  1. Open the application’s installation folder.
  2. Right-click its main .exe file.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open Details and note the product information.
  5. Check the vendor’s documentation for whether the installed release is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Some older applications provide separate executables or installation choices. Select the architecture supported by both the host DAW and the ReWire device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use matching versions

Do not replace a 64-bit rewire.dll with a 32-bit copy, or the reverse. Do not combine a file from an unrelated ReWire-era product with a different host.

If the host is 32-bit, install the 32-bit version of the ReWire device from the application’s original installer. If the host is 64-bit, use the compatible 64-bit application where the vendor supports it.

Reason’s older releases had different architecture support. Some older versions could run in either mode, while later Reason 8 releases were 64-bit only. The exact choice depends on the application version and the DAW.

Check for duplicate copies

Multiple audio applications may have installed different ReWire versions. Do not delete every search result for rewire.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instead:

  1. Close all audio applications.
  2. Search File Explorer for rewire.dll.
  3. Record each full path.
  4. Note which application installed or uses each path.
  5. Use the affected application’s uninstall and reinstall process.
  6. Avoid manually moving, renaming, or deleting copies from shared directories unless the vendor’s instructions specifically require it.

A stale copy can remain after an incomplete uninstall, but removing the wrong copy may break another legacy project.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Defender or another security product may have quarantined the file, blocked an installer, or prevented a replacement.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections around the time the error began.
  5. Open the relevant detection.
  6. Inspect the detected file path, threat name, source, and action.
  7. Compare the path with the official application installation location.
  8. Restore or allow the file only if it came from a trusted, legitimate installer and has been independently scanned.
  9. Reinstall the owning application after confirming the file’s provenance.
  10. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.

Do not restore a file merely because its name is rewire.dll. Malware can use a familiar filename, and an altered DLL may be unsafe even if the application used to contain a legitimate file with that name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Remove a blocked installation state

A ReWire installation can fail when a DAW or device still has the component open.

  1. Save work in every audio application.
  2. Close all DAWs, plug-in hosts, Reason, ReBirth, and related launchers.
  3. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  4. Select Processes.
  5. End only audio processes that you recognize and that are no longer responding.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Run the trusted application installer again.
  8. If it offers Run as administrator, right-click the installer and select that option.
  9. Complete the installation.
  10. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not disable User Account Control permanently and do not grant broad permissions to an unknown installer. If the installation still reports access denied, examine antivirus, backup, controlled-folder-access, and file-locking activity rather than copying a DLL manually.

Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair

regsvr32 is not a universal DLL fixer. It calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer entry point, which is intended for certain self-registering components such as some COM libraries.

A runtime or application library may not provide that entry point. Running:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 rewire.dll

can therefore produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found,” without repairing anything.

ReWire is installed and managed by the audio application. Use the application’s repair or reinstall process instead. Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor explicitly instructs you to register that exact file.

Fix 6: Do not copy rewire.dll from the internet

Avoid DLL download repositories, file-sharing sites, forum attachments, and replacement files sent by unknown sources. A manually downloaded DLL can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to another product version, or omit dependencies that the application also needs.

Manual copying can also create version conflicts between applications. Copying the file into System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder can make troubleshooting harder and may cause crashes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe sources are:

  • The original ReBirth, Reason, or DAW installer
  • The application vendor’s official account or download area
  • Original installation media
  • A verified backup of the complete application installation
  • The vendor’s documented legacy support channel

There is no current standalone ReWire redistributable that should be treated as a general Windows component. If you no longer have a legitimate installer for an obsolete application, the supported conclusion may be that the old software cannot be restored safely on that system.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged

rewire.dll is a third-party application file, so System File Checker normally will not recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself is malfunctioning, system files are damaged, Windows Update is failing, or other protected Windows components are also reporting errors.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Retry the audio application repair.

DISM repairs the Windows image, and SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command normally downloads or restores a third-party ReWire DLL.

Repeating these commands will not solve an application installation problem if the owning program is missing or unsupported. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork by showing what Windows repair issues it detects, but its free scan is diagnostic and the repair function requires the full version; reinstalling the owning audio application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 8: Reinstall drivers only for a separate audio-device problem

Drivers are not the first-line fix for a missing rewire.dll. However, if the same failure includes an audio device error, missing interface, distorted playback, or a DAW that cannot see the hardware, check the audio driver separately.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the audio interface or sound device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the General tab for a device-status error.
  7. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
  8. Obtain the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
  9. Install it and restart Windows.
  10. Reopen the DAW and test the device.

Do not uninstall a working audio driver merely because rewire.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention, while the full version performs the driver installation; it is optional, and a driver update will not replace the application-owned ReWire file.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent installation failure

If ReWire worked until a specific installation, update, or cleanup operation, System Restore may roll back the relevant system state.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Choose a different restore point if that option appears.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the applications and drivers that may be removed or restored.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal documents, photos, or other personal files, but review the affected-program list before proceeding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application was never installed correctly or ReWire is no longer supported by that product, System Restore will not create a supported modern installer.

When the application no longer supports ReWire

ReWire was discontinued as a current technology. Reason 11 and later removed ReWire and moved toward the Reason Rack Plugin.

If a current Reason installation does not provide ReWire, that is not necessarily a missing-DLL problem. You may need to:

  • Keep an older, legitimately licensed Reason installation for legacy projects.
  • Use a compatible older DAW and matching architecture.
  • Migrate the project to the Reason Rack Plugin.
  • Export audio or MIDI from the older project where direct compatibility is unavailable.
  • Contact the vendor for guidance on legacy project conversion.

Do not force a modern installer to accept an old rewire.dll. A file that loads successfully is not proof that the host and device are compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to scan for malware

Treat the file as suspicious when:

  • It appeared in a download or temporary folder.
  • Its digital signature is missing or invalid.
  • Its path does not relate to an installed audio application.
  • Antivirus detected it as altered or malicious.
  • The error began after installing pirated or unofficial software.
  • Multiple unexplained copies appeared.
  • Other applications began crashing at the same time.

Run a full scan in Windows Security. If the file is detected, quarantine it and reinstall the legitimate application rather than restoring it blindly.

Advanced information to collect

If the problem continues, record:

  • The full error message
  • The application that displays it
  • The application and Windows versions
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether the host DAW and ReWire device match in architecture
  • Every full path found for rewire.dll
  • Digital-signature status
  • Antivirus detection details
  • The installer or uninstall log
  • The change that preceded the failure
  • Whether another DAW or ReWire application is installed

This information helps the vendor distinguish a missing file from a wrong-bitness file, dependency failure, access-denied installation, stale shared copy, or unsupported ReWire workflow.

FAQ

Is rewire.dll part of Windows?

No. rewire.dll belongs to legacy ReWire audio software associated with Propellerhead Software products. It is not a Microsoft runtime and should not normally be restored from System32.

Does rewire.dll belong only to ReBirth RB-338?

ReBirth RB-338 is a historical product associated with the file, but other ReWire-enabled applications could install or use the technology. Identify the application named in the error before repairing anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download rewire.dll by itself?

Do not use a random DLL download. Obtain it through the legitimate installer for the owning application, if that application still provides a supported installer.

Will regsvr32 rewire.dll fix the error?

Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs designed for self-registration, while ReWire is installed as part of audio software. Use the application’s repair or reinstall process.

Will SFC restore rewire.dll?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, not third-party application DLLs. Run it only when Windows itself has additional corruption symptoms.

Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?

The message can mean that a dependency of rewire.dll is missing, the file is corrupted, the wrong architecture is being loaded, or another required module cannot be found. Repair the complete application rather than replacing only the named file.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not as the first response to this error. Those components may matter for a separate application message, but rewire.dll is normally repaired through the owning audio application.

What if I only have an old installer?

Use it only if it came from a legitimate purchase, vendor account, original media, or verified backup. If no supported installer exists, do not substitute a downloaded DLL. The old software may simply be unsupported on the current system.
