Fix 1: Install the official RPG Maker VX RTP
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
This is the safest and most likely fix when one or more older RPG Maker VX games report a missing runtime file.
- Open a browser and go to the official RPG Maker support site operated by the publisher.
- Open the RTP or Run-Time Package downloads page.
- Select RPG Maker VX RTP.
- Do not select RPG Maker VX Ace RTP, RPG Maker XP RTP, or another RPG Maker package. These runtimes are engine-specific.
- Download and run the normal installer.
- Accept the default installation options unless your organization uses a managed software location.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Start the game again from its original shortcut or executable.
A successful installation usually allows the game to pass the missing-DLL check and begin loading its title screen. It may still display a separate missing-resource or script error if the game itself is incomplete.

#1 Best Overall
If the game specifically requests RGSS202J.dll, install or update the current RPG Maker VX RTP rather than renaming files. RGSS202J.dll and rgss200j.dll are different runtime files, and the official VX update history documents a change in the runtime DLL requested at launch.
Fix 2: Confirm that the game is really made with RPG Maker VX
Time needed: 5 minutes
RPG Maker VX, VX Ace, and XP do not use the same runtime family. Installing the wrong RTP can leave the original error unchanged.
Check the game folder:
- Right-click the game shortcut and select Open file location.
- Look for
Game.ini, a launcher readme, or documentation included with the download. - Open
Game.iniwith Notepad. - Review the game title, launcher notes, and any runtime references.
- Look for wording that identifies RPG Maker VX or RGSS2.
- Check the exact filename in the error message.
Do not treat similar names as interchangeable:
rgss200j.dllbelongs to the older VX/RGSS2 runtime family.RGSS202J.dllis another VX runtime file or revision.RGSS202E.dllis a related English-build filename.RGSS300J.dllbelongs to a different runtime generation.- VX Ace uses a different runtime family from VX.
If the game is made with VX Ace or XP, install that engine’s matching RTP instead. If the game documentation says that runtime files are embedded, the missing DLL points more strongly to a damaged or incomplete game folder.
Fix 3: Reinstall or re-extract the complete game
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A game archive may contain only game data and expect the player to install the correct RTP separately. Extraction can also fail when an archive is incomplete, nested, interrupted, or split into multiple parts.
- Delete the damaged game folder, or rename it to keep it as a backup.
- Re-download the game from its original publisher or distribution source.
- If the download contains multiple archive parts, obtain every part before extracting.
- Right-click the archive and choose Extract All.
- Extract it to a simple local folder such as
C:GamesGameName. - Avoid extracting directly inside
Program Files, a cloud-synced folder, or a temporary download folder. - Run the game executable again.
If the newly extracted copy works, the original archive or extraction was incomplete. If the same error remains, verify that the correct VX RTP is installed and that the game is not requesting a different runtime filename.

A game that starts and then displays RGSS-RTP Standard not found is reporting missing runtime assets rather than necessarily missing rgss200j.dll alone. Installing the matching VX RTP and reinstalling the game are the appropriate first steps.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
If rgss200j.dll existed and then disappeared, Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined it. This can happen with old game runtimes or self-extracting installers, but a detection cannot be called a false positive without examining the specific file and detection.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections related to the game folder, installer, or RPG Maker runtime.
- Open the detection details.
- Confirm that the affected file belongs to the expected game and came from a trusted source.
- If you trust the original source and the detection is appropriate to restore, follow the Windows Security option to restore the file.
- Reinstall the official VX RTP or re-extract the game afterward.
- Start the game and confirm whether the file remains present.
Do not disable antivirus protection globally. If the file is detected again, stop and investigate the source rather than repeatedly restoring it.

Fix 5: Check the game folder and permissions
Time needed: 5 minutes
rgss200j.dll is normally a private application or runtime file. It should be loaded by the game and its associated runtime, not copied into Windows system folders.
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Confirm whether the error names
rgss200j.dllor another filename such asRGSS202J.dll. - Right-click the game executable and select Properties.
- On the General tab, look for an Unblock checkbox or button. If present, select it and choose Apply.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Test Run this program as an administrator only if the game cannot write to its own folder.
- Move the game to a simple folder such as
C:GamesGameName. - Start it again.
Do not copy the file to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. A 32-bit legacy game can run on 64-bit Windows, and the presence of a 64-bit operating system does not mean it needs a 64-bit replacement DLL.
Rank #3
Do not run:
regsvr32 rgss200j.dll
This is not normally a COM component that must be registered. RPG Maker runtime DLLs are loaded by the game executable, and registration will not repair a missing or mismatched game runtime.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the game crashes after loading
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A graphics driver is not the normal cause of a missing rgss200j.dll message. Check drivers only when the VX game launches successfully but crashes during graphics initialization, displays a blank window, or reports that RGSS2 Player has stopped working.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed graphics adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the driver provider and status.
- Select Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver supplied by the computer or graphics-card manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game from a clean installation.
Avoid removing a working display driver merely because a DLL error appeared. A driver update is a secondary compatibility step, not a replacement for the VX RTP.
If manually checking several hardware vendors and driver versions is becoming repetitive, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the game’s required runtime remains the definitive fix for a missing rgss200j.dll.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only if other programs are also failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use Windows repair commands when multiple unrelated applications have missing or damaged system components. They are not the primary repair for a missing third-party RPG Maker DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows components and protected system files; they do not reliably recreate a missing RPG Maker runtime file.
If you are repeatedly hunting through Windows repair steps without knowing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues; its free scan shows what it found, while repairs are handled by the full version. For this file, reinstalling the official VX RTP remains the definitive fix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Causes of rgss200j.dll errors
| Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| VX RTP is not installed | Install the official RPG Maker VX RTP |
| Wrong RPG Maker generation | Match the RTP to VX, VX Ace, XP, or the engine named by the game |
| Incomplete archive | Re-download and extract the complete original package |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection history and reinstall from a trusted source |
| Damaged installation | Remove or rename the game folder and install it again |
| Different runtime revision | Use the exact filename requested by the game and update the VX RTP |
| Crash after launch | Investigate scripts, assets, permissions, locale behavior, or compatibility |
| Broader Windows corruption | Run DISM followed by SFC only when other Windows components also fail |
Why random DLL downloads are a poor fix
Do not download rgss200j.dll from a random DLL website or copy a file from an unrelated computer. The file may contain malware, have the wrong runtime revision or architecture, or fail because the game is actually missing another dependency.
The safe source is the official RPG Maker VX RTP supplied through the publisher’s RPG Maker support pages. The other safe source is the original game installer or archive from its trusted developer or distributor. Manual copying can work only when the source is trusted and the exact runtime build matches, so it is not the preferred general repair.
FAQ
Is rgss200j.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with RPG Maker VX and its RGSS2 runtime. Windows does not normally supply it.
Do I need to install RPG Maker VX itself?
Usually not. A properly packaged game generally needs the official VX RTP, not the RPG Maker VX editor. The editor is required to create or modify projects, not merely to play them.
Can I use the VX Ace RTP?
No. VX and VX Ace use different runtime families. Install the RTP that matches the game.
Best Value
Why does the error mention RGSS202J.dll instead?
That is a different VX runtime filename or revision. Install or update the official VX RTP rather than renaming one DLL to another.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. Keep the runtime with the game or install it through the appropriate RTP. System32 and SysWOW64 are not general-purpose locations for application DLLs.
Does 64-bit Windows require a 64-bit version?
No. Many RPG Maker VX games are 32-bit legacy applications and can run on 64-bit Windows with the matching 32-bit runtime.
What if the game says “RGSS2 Player has stopped working”?
That indicates a broader launch or compatibility failure. Test a clean installation, verify the game’s assets and scripts, move it outside protected folders, and try compatibility settings. A missing DLL may not be the cause if the file is already present.
When should I use System Restore?
Only as a last resort when the game worked previously and its failure clearly coincided with a known system change. System Restore is not a targeted repair for this runtime file.
