richink.dll Is Missing: Trace the ActiveSync Converter Safely

richink.dll errors usually appear when Windows or an old application cannot find a Windows CE document-conversion component. The file is associated with Microsoft ActiveSync and Windows CE Services, not with the normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

You may see messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because richink.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “Error loading richink.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Failed to load richink.dll.”
  • “richink.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “Cannot Convert File.”

The 60-second answer

Do not download richink.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. First identify the program named in the error and check whether Microsoft ActiveSync, Windows CE Services, or an old Office installation is still present.

The expected legacy location is normally the parent program’s folder, historically:

The safest repair is to use Control Panel to repair or reinstall the application that originally supplied the file. If you no longer use ActiveSync, Windows CE, or Pocket Word files, removing the obsolete program or its leftover startup entry may be the correct solution.

Microsoft describes ActiveSync as handling document conversion when files move between a desktop computer and a Windows CE or Pocket PC device. Its documentation identifies Richink.dll as one of the document converters used with ActiveSync and Office.

What richink.dll is

richink.dll is part of the Windows CE Services Document Converter system. It was used to convert documents between desktop Office formats and Windows CE or Pocket PC formats, including legacy Pocket Word documents.

The file may have been installed or updated by:

  • Windows CE Services 2.0 or 2.1
  • Microsoft ActiveSync 3.x
  • Some ActiveSync 4.5 installations
  • Office XP or Word 2002

The Microsoft ActiveSync architecture documentation explains the desktop-to-device conversion process.

A public file record commonly identifies a 32-bit 3.1.1.0 build measuring approximately 0.21 MB. Treat that as a possible historical record, not as a universal requirement. Microsoft does not publish a complete current version table or hash for this file.

Windows Mobile Device Center replaced ActiveSync for supported Windows Vista-era workflows, but Microsoft now describes Windows Mobile Device Center as discontinued and says its downloads have been removed. There is no Microsoft-supported modern Windows 10 or Windows 11 package specifically intended to restore richink.dll.

Why the error appears

The most likely causes are:

Cause What usually fixes it
ActiveSync or Windows CE Services was incompletely installed or damaged Repair or reinstall the parent package
Office XP or Word 2002 replaced the converter Repair the Office installation
Antivirus quarantined the file Check Protection History, then reinstall from trusted media
A cleanup tool or manual deletion removed it Reinstall the application
An old startup entry still points to ActiveSync Remove the obsolete application or disable its documented startup entry
The file is in the wrong folder or has the wrong build Restore the matching file through the original installer
A dependency of richink.dll is missing Identify the dependent module rather than copying another DLL
A suspicious copy was planted by malware Scan the computer and reinstall from trusted media

The error may occur when starting an old synchronization tool, converting a Pocket Word file, opening a legacy .pwi file, repairing ActiveSync, or starting Windows with an orphaned legacy startup entry.

Fix 1: Identify the parent program

Before changing files, inspect the complete error and determine which executable requested richink.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the error window carefully and note the application name.
  2. If the message includes a path, record that path.
  3. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  4. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  5. Search for ActiveSync, Windows CE Services, Windows Mobile, Office, or Word.
  6. Also open Control Panel.
  7. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  8. Look for the same products in the installed-program list.

If the error points to an old synchronization executable, ActiveSync or Windows CE Services is the likely parent. If it appears while opening a Pocket Word document through an old Office installation, Office XP or Word 2002 may own the converter.

If no related program is installed, the message may come from a stale startup item or file association rather than an active Windows component.

Fix 2: Repair ActiveSync, Windows CE Services, or Office

Old ActiveSync packages generally use Control Panel rather than the modern Windows app-repair interface.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select Microsoft ActiveSync, Windows CE Services, or the relevant Office product.
  4. Select Change.
  5. Choose Repair, if available.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Repeat the action that produced the error.

If no repair option is available:

  1. Return to Programs and Features.
  2. Select the affected program.
  3. Choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Reinstall it from the original Microsoft installer or installation media.
  6. Restart again and test the application.

Microsoft’s ActiveSync 4.5 download page lists the package files and states that ActiveSync 4.5 is intended for Windows XP SP2 or earlier. It also warns that some database and font conversion was not supported. Installing it blindly on Windows 10 or Windows 11 is not guaranteed to restore this file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Office XP or Word 2002 is the relevant parent program, repair Office instead of copying a DLL:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and Features, or Add or Remove Programs on older Windows.
  3. Select the Office product.
  4. Choose Change.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Complete the wizard and restart Windows.

When the file was replaced by an Office installation, Office Repair is more reliable than manually replacing richink.dll, because the converter may depend on other Office files and integration settings.

Fix 3: Check the file location and architecture

A legitimate file name does not prove that a copy is safe or correctly installed.

Check the folder named in the error and look for the parent application’s directory. A copy in the ActiveSync or Windows CE Services folder is more plausible than one in:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
%TEMP%

Do not move the file between these folders. System32 is the normal location for 64-bit system components on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. That naming is confusing, but neither folder is the normal home for this application DLL.

The known historical record is 32-bit. A 32-bit application normally loads its application DLL from its own installation directory. Windows DLL search behavior can also involve dependent modules from other locations, so finding richink.dll somewhere on the disk does not prove that the installation is complete.

Microsoft explains this behavior in its documentation on dynamic-link library search order.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Antivirus software may remove an old or modified converter even when the original application is legitimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review entries from the time the error began.
  5. Expand any entry associated with ActiveSync, Windows CE Services, Office, or richink.dll.
  6. Do not restore the file solely because its name looks familiar.
  7. If the program came from trusted Microsoft installation media, use the parent program’s repair or reinstall process instead.
  8. Run a full scan if the file was found in a temporary or unrelated folder.

Microsoft documents these controls in Protection History in Windows Security.

A suspicious copy in %TEMP%, a user profile directory, or an unrelated application directory should not be copied into the ActiveSync folder. Scan it and reinstall the parent program from trusted media.

Fix 5: Determine whether a dependency is missing

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that richink.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load one of its dependencies.

This is especially relevant when:

  • richink.dll is visibly present in the correct application folder
  • The error says “specified module could not be found”
  • Repairing the parent program did not help
  • The file is rejected as invalid or incompatible

Do not respond by downloading several unrelated DLLs. Use the application installer to restore its complete set of files, or inspect the application’s installation and event logs. Microsoft discusses dependency and loading failures in its DLL troubleshooting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Remove a stale startup entry if the old program is gone

If you see the error immediately after signing in but no longer use ActiveSync or Windows CE software, Windows may be trying to launch an orphaned legacy component.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an entry clearly belonging to ActiveSync, Windows CE, or the removed application.
  4. Select it and choose Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

Also check Settings > Apps > Startup for the same entry.

Do not delete random registry values to suppress the message. If the entry is not identifiable, uninstall the obsolete parent application through Programs and Features, or use System Restore if the problem clearly began immediately after an uninstall and a suitable restore point exists.

Fix 7: Use Windows repair commands only for broader corruption

richink.dll is normally an application file, not a protected Windows system component. Therefore, System File Checker is unlikely to restore it. Use these commands when Windows has other corruption symptoms, such as broken system tools, update failures, or multiple Windows components failing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows and test the original application.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.

Repeating these commands will not recreate an application DLL that was never part of the Windows component store.

Manually hunting through system files and repeatedly rerunning DISM or SFC can be slow when the real problem is an old application installation. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling ActiveSync or Office remains the definitive fix for this application-specific file.

Fix 8: Do not install unrelated drivers or runtimes

richink.dll is not normally repaired by installing DirectX, Visual C++ Redistributables, .NET, a graphics driver, or a random Windows Feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Device Manager only when the error also identifies a separate hardware or device problem:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category for the affected device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows installs a driver.

Updating a driver will not normally restore an ActiveSync converter. If a separate device issue leaves you guessing among many outdated packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; the free scan shows what it finds, while installation is handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the program that owns richink.dll.

Do not enable optional Windows Features merely because a DLL error appears. ActiveSync and Windows CE Services are legacy application packages, not current Windows Features.

When a virtual machine is the practical answer

ActiveSync and Windows CE software may not function correctly on current Windows versions. If your goal is to convert an old Pocket Word document, an isolated Windows XP virtual machine containing the original legacy software may be more practical than forcing the converter into Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a compatibility workaround, not a current Microsoft-supported installation path. Keep the virtual machine isolated, use trusted installation media, and avoid downloading a loose DLL from an unknown source.

Should you download richink.dll?

No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, a modified file, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture. A loose copy may also fail because the application needs registry entries, companion converter files, Office integration, or another dependency.

Use the original Microsoft installer, trusted installation media, or the repair option for the parent application. Do not run:

regsvr32 richink.dll

regsvr32 only applies to DLLs that expose the required self-registration entry point. There is no Microsoft instruction to register richink.dll this way. See Microsoft’s regsvr32 reference for its actual scope.

FAQ

Is richink.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?

No. It is a legacy Windows CE Services and ActiveSync document-conversion component. A current Windows installation does not normally need it.

Should I put richink.dll in System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Keep it in the folder belonging to ActiveSync, Windows CE Services, or the application that installed it. Copying a 32-bit application DLL into a system directory can create conflicts without repairing the original installation.

Is the 3.1.1.0 version always correct?

No. That is a plausible historical 32-bit record, but Microsoft does not publish a complete version table or hash for every installation. The matching build is the one supplied by the parent program’s installer.

Can SFC restore richink.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while richink.dll is normally an application file. Repair or reinstall ActiveSync, Windows CE Services, or Office first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I delete richink.dll?

Do not delete it if an old application still uses it. If you have removed all ActiveSync, Windows CE, and legacy Office workflows and the error comes from a stale startup entry, remove the obsolete application or disable its documented startup entry instead.

What if the file exists but still will not load?

The file may be incompatible, damaged, in the wrong directory, or missing a dependency. Repair the parent program and inspect the full error path. The presence of a file with the right name is not proof that the installation is valid.
