Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou may see “The program can’t start because wudriver.dll is missing from your computer,” “The specified module could not be found,” or “The code execution cannot proceed because wudriver.dll was not found.” The message may also say that wudriver.dll is not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.
The 60-second answer
wudriver.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. Its embedded description is Windows Update WUDriver Stub, and it belongs to Windows Update and servicing packages rather than Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, a particular game, or a normal hardware-driver installer.

Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or a game folder. Repair Windows instead:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses to restore protected system files. If the commands fail on Windows 11, use Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now.

What causes a wudriver.dll error
The most likely causes are:
- A protected Windows file was deleted, corrupted, or replaced with a mismatched copy.
- A Windows servicing or update operation stopped partway through.
- The Windows component store is damaged.
- Windows Security quarantined the file.
- Windows is trying to load a file with the wrong architecture.
- The named DLL exists, but one of its dependencies is missing.
- Malware, disk corruption, or broader Windows damage is affecting system files.
The exact message does not always identify the real cause. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that Windows cannot find a dependency required by wudriver.dll, not necessarily that the named file itself is absent.
If only one game or application reports the error, record its executable path and when the message appears. A launcher may have its own damaged files, but wudriver.dll itself is a Windows Update component, so Windows repair should come before downloading or copying anything.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the best first repair for a missing or damaged system copy.
Recommended Free Tools
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- When DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected operating-system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired source.
A successful SFC scan may report that it found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. Try the application again after restarting. If the error remains, continue with Windows Update and the repair options below rather than repeating the same commands indefinitely.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting through Windows repair steps: its free scan shows what it finds, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands remain the direct repair path.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found
Windows may need a matching repair source when Windows Update is damaged or unavailable. Microsoft documents using DISM with /Source and /LimitAccess, but the source must closely match the installed Windows edition, version, and architecture.
Do not point DISM at an arbitrary Windows folder or an unrelated ISO. If you do not have a matching official installation source, use the Windows Update repair option or an in-place Windows repair instead.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
Because wudriver.dll is part of Windows Update and servicing packages, an incomplete update can leave related files out of sync.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart when Windows asks.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further update is offered.
- Test the program that produced the error.
Microsoft documents wudriver.dll in update-client and servicing packages for several Windows releases. Its version is tied to the Windows build, so there is no universal current DLL version that should be downloaded manually.

Fix 3: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Use the built-in troubleshooter if updates fail, remain pending, or repeatedly roll back.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update.
- Select Run.
- Apply any recommended repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Check for updates again.
The troubleshooter can correct common update-service and cache problems. It will not make an unofficial DLL safe, so do not combine this repair with a downloaded replacement file.
Fix 4: Reset Windows Update components
Use this when Windows Update repeatedly fails after the troubleshooter.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
- Rename the update data folders:
ren %windir%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %windir%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
- Restart the services:
net start wuauserv
net start bits
net start cryptsvc
- Close Command Prompt.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- After updates complete, run DISM and SFC again if the DLL error remains.
Renaming these folders makes Windows create fresh update caches. It does not delete your personal files, but Windows may need to rebuild update history and download update data again.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged-looking system file. Do not disable protection just to make the error disappear.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
wudriver.dll. - If the file was quarantined, verify its location and signature before restoring it.
- Run a full scan if the event is unexpected.
A legitimate system copy should be digitally signed by Microsoft and normally be located under %windir%. Restore a quarantined file only when its signature and location are trustworthy. If Defender detects it again, do not repeatedly allow it without investigating malware or file corruption.
Fix 6: Check the file location and digital signature
The expected location depends on Windows architecture and WOW64 redirection.
- On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit system files normally use
%windir%System32. - 32-bit system files normally use
%windir%SysWOW64.
Those names are counterintuitive: SysWOW64 generally contains 32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit and 64-bit copy are not interchangeable.
To inspect a copy:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%windir%System32
- Find
wudriver.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Check the Details tab for the file description.
You can also inspect %windir%SysWOW64 on 64-bit Windows. Do not copy a file between these folders. DISM and SFC are the correct way to restore the version matching your Windows build.

An unexpected copy beside a game, launcher, installer, or unrelated executable deserves extra scrutiny. Windows searches some executable directories when loading dependencies, so an attacker or broken application can cause the wrong DLL to load from a local folder.
Fix 7: Repair Windows 11 in place
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component store, Windows 11 has a stronger built-in option.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the computer connected to power and connected to the internet.
- Restart when prompted.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while retaining apps, personal files, and settings. It is not the same as resetting the PC and is usually preferable when the operating system is damaged but still usable.
If this option is not available, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair, making sure the edition and architecture match the installed system.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, utility installation, or other system change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Select OK.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and confirm.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs without removing personal files. It cannot help if no suitable restore point exists.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to reinstall a driver
Usually, no. Despite the name, wudriver.dll is not the hardware driver for your graphics card, sound device, printer, chipset, or other component. It is associated with Windows Update’s driver-update logic.
If the error appeared while installing a device driver, repair Windows first. Then reinstall the actual device driver from the PC or hardware manufacturer:

- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and device model.
- Use Update driver or uninstall the device and restart Windows.
- Install the matching driver from the manufacturer if Windows does not restore it.
- Avoid mixing 32-bit and 64-bit driver packages.
Outbyte Driver Updater can save time when you are checking many device drivers and are unsure which package is stale: its free scan identifies what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the manufacturer’s driver remains the safest choice for a specific device.
A hardware-driver reinstall will not directly replace a missing Windows servicing component. Do not treat the filename as proof that a GPU, audio, or chipset package owns it.

Why regsvr32 is not a fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 wudriver.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer entry point, typically ActiveX or COM components. wudriver.dll does not expose that entry point. The command therefore produces an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not mean the DLL needs a different registration command. Repair it through Windows servicing instead.

What not to install
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, .NET, or a game runtime solely because a generic DLL error page recommends them. There is no verified evidence that wudriver.dll belongs to those packages.
Likewise, do not download a DLL from an unverified archive. A replacement may contain malware, target the wrong Windows architecture, match a different build, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or damaged component store. Microsoft does not provide a standalone modern wudriver.dll download.
If a game launcher reports the error, use its official Verify, Repair, or equivalent option. Reinstalling that game is appropriate when its own files are damaged, but it is not a substitute for repairing a missing Windows component.
FAQ
Is wudriver.dll safe?
A genuine copy should be Microsoft-signed and normally reside under %windir%. A copy in an unrelated application folder should be checked carefully for its signature, location, and malware findings.

No specific game has been reliably established as its owner. A game may display the error while Windows is missing or unable to load the component, or while another dependency is missing.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Copying an arbitrary DLL can create a wrong-version or wrong-architecture mismatch and can expose Windows to malicious code. Use DISM followed by SFC.
Why does Windows say the specified module is missing when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another DLL that Windows cannot find or load. Windows searches for dependencies separately, so the visible filename is not always the missing file.
