If Windows says “RiotGamesApi.dll was not found”, do not download the file from a DLL website or copy it from another PC. The safest fix is to restore the file through Riot’s own repair or installation process.
Start with Riot Client’s Repair option. If that fails, check antivirus quarantine, clear the affected game’s local cache, reinstall the relevant Riot software, and then repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.

What the RiotGamesApi.dll error means
Windows cannot successfully load a Riot component required by the affected game or client. The message may say that RiotGamesApi.dll is missing, contains an error, or is not designed to run on Windows.
“Missing” does not always mean the file is literally absent. The file may have been quarantined, deleted, placed in the wrong folder, damaged during an update, or blocked by permissions or security software. Windows may also be unable to load one of its dependencies. These are possible explanations, not confirmation of how a particular Riot build loads the file.

Note the exact message and the executable it names. It may refer to VALORANT-Win64-Shipping.exe, LeagueClient.exe, or another Riot executable. That identifies whether the problem is most likely connected to VALORANT, League of Legends, Riot Client, or another installation.
RiotGamesApi.dll is an installed Riot game or client component—not a file you should obtain from Riot’s public developer API documentation. Riot’s developer materials describe web APIs and separate local client APIs: Riot developer API information.
Before you start
- Record the full error text and affected executable.
- Identify the affected game: VALORANT, League of Legends, or Riot Client.
- Confirm the actual installation drive. Typical examples include
C:Riot GamesVALORANT,C:Riot GamesLeague of Legends, andC:Riot GamesRiot Client, but your path may differ. - Check whether the error began immediately after a game, antivirus, or Windows update.
- Close Riot Client before clearing files or reinstalling. In Task Manager, close only clearly identified Riot processes that are still running.
Quick decision guide
| Symptom | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Error appeared after a patch | Run Repair, then inspect antivirus history. |
| The DLL is absent | Repair or reinstall the affected Riot software. |
| The DLL exists but Windows still reports it as missing | Check quarantine, permissions, dependencies, and the installation build. |
| Several Riot games fail | Investigate Riot Client, Vanguard, security software, Windows, and the storage drive. |
| Repair is unavailable | Restart Riot processes, reopen the client, or reinstall. |
| A VAN error appears instead | Follow the guide for that specific Vanguard error. |
1. Repair the game in Riot Client
This is the preferred first step because it is comparatively safe and is intended to identify and replace damaged or missing installation files.
- Open Riot Client and sign in if required.
- Select the affected game.
- Open your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select the relevant game in the left column.
- Choose Repair at the bottom of the page.
- Allow verification, repair, and patching to finish completely.
- Restart Riot Client and launch the game from the client rather than an old desktop shortcut.
Riot’s interface and labels can vary by title and client version, but its support instructions describe this profile-menu repair path: Riot’s repair and launch guidance.
If Repair is unavailable, close Riot Client fully, check Task Manager for remaining Riot processes, and reopen the client. If the game is not detected, reinstall it or use any official option the client provides to locate the existing installation. Do not create a replacement DLL manually.
Verify the result
Restart Windows if requested, open Riot Client directly, let every pending update finish, and launch the affected game. If the DLL error is gone, stop. If a different error appears, troubleshoot that new error rather than repeating DLL fixes.
2. Check Windows Security and antivirus quarantine
A security product may have blocked or quarantined a legitimate file. This is especially plausible when the error began after an antivirus definition update, a game patch, or a failed launch accompanied by a security notification.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an event involving Riot Client, VALORANT, League of Legends, or
RiotGamesApi.dll. - Check that the detection points to your official Riot installation and that the software was installed from Riot.
- If it is clearly a false positive, use the available Restore or Allow on device option.
- Run Riot Client Repair afterward.
Do not restore a file blindly simply because its name looks familiar. If a third-party antivirus made the detection, review its quarantine or history area and follow its vendor’s instructions. Riot’s documented example paths include executables such as LeagueClient.exe, LeagueClientUx.exe, LeagueClientUxRenderer.exe, RiotClientServices.exe, and Vanguard services under C:Program FilesRiot Vanguard; paths vary by game and installation: Riot’s antivirus and launch guidance.
If protection repeatedly blocks the official installation, use only a narrow, temporary exclusion for the relevant Riot executable or installation folder. Restore normal protection and remove the exclusion when testing is complete. Permanently disabling antivirus is not a fix.

3. Clear the relevant local cache, then repair
A stale configuration or partial update can prevent Riot Client from recognizing a repaired file. Clear only folders clearly associated with the affected Riot title—not the entire AppData directory.
- Exit Riot Client.
- Open Task Manager and end remaining Riot-related processes only when necessary.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Back up settings or screenshots you want to preserve.
- Delete the local cache folder for the affected game and relevant Riot cache data. Folder names and locations vary, so do not remove unrelated folders.
- Reopen Riot Client.
- Run Repair again and allow patching to finish.
Riot’s League launch guidance includes removing the game’s local AppData folder and relevant local Riot Games folders, but the exact cache names can change: Riot cache-clearing guidance.

Skip this step or back up first if you use custom settings that are not synchronized, are unsure which folder belongs to the game, or have not yet tried the built-in Repair option.
Verify the result
Open the client, wait for it to rebuild or download required data, and start the affected game. If it still fails, proceed to a clean reinstall rather than copying individual DLLs.
4. Clean-reinstall the affected Riot game or client
Reinstall when Repair fails, the file repeatedly disappears, or the client cannot complete its patch. Repair or reinstall only the affected title first when one game fails. If several Riot games fail, the shared Riot Client, Vanguard, security software, or Windows may be involved.
- Uninstall the affected game through Windows Installed apps or Riot’s official uninstall process.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove leftover folders belonging only to that game if the official uninstall leaves them behind. Back up settings first.
- Download the installer from Riot’s official website.
- Install to a healthy local drive with sufficient free space.
- Use Run as administrator for the installer only when necessary; do not force administrator mode on every game executable.
- Open the newly installed Riot Client and allow all updates to finish before launching.

Try a clean boot
- Press Windows key + R, enter
msconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Services tab.
- Select Hide all Microsoft services.
- Select Disable all.
- If the affected title requires Vanguard, re-enable the
vgcservice. - Select Apply, then OK, and restart.
- Test Riot Client and the game.
After testing, return to msconfig and restore normal startup so unrelated Windows services are not left disabled. Riot’s clean-boot instructions are available here.
Check permissions, compatibility, and storage
- Open the Riot Client shortcut or executable’s Properties > Compatibility page and avoid forcing compatibility mode.
- Do not enable administrator mode on every individual game executable.
- Confirm that the installation folder is accessible and not read-only.
- If the game is on an external, failing, or nearly full drive, reinstall it to a healthy local drive.
Riot cautions that changing permissions on individual game executables can itself cause errors, so permissions changes should be narrow and made only when necessary: Riot permissions guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use these “fixes”
- Downloading
RiotGamesApi.dllfrom a third-party DLL site. - Copying the file from another PC or another Riot folder.
- Putting a game-specific DLL in
C:WindowsSystem32. - Permanently disabling antivirus.
- Running every Riot file as administrator.
- Using registry cleaners or paid “DLL fixer” utilities.
- Deleting the entire Riot folder without backing up settings and identifying shared installations.
A copied DLL may come from a different patch, architecture, region, or game build. Even when the filename is present, it may be corrupted, blocked, the wrong version, or unable to load a dependency. Riot Repair or an official reinstall addresses the installation as a whole.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen the message changes
If the error changes to a VAN code, stop treating it as a missing-DLL problem. Follow the guide for that exact code. For example, Riot’s VAN 9002 guidance concerns Windows Exploit Protection settings and Riot-related entries, not manual DLL replacement.
Still broken? Send Riot the right evidence
If Repair, security review, cache clearing, reinstall, Windows repair, and a clean boot do not resolve the problem, use Riot’s official Riot Repair Tool process. Run it as administrator only if Riot’s instructions request that, reproduce the error, and attach the generated compressed logs to a support ticket.
Include:
- The exact error text and named executable.
- The affected game.
- Your Windows edition and build.
- The Riot Client version, if visible.
- Antivirus or security software in use.
- The game’s installation path.
- Whether Repair and reinstall completed successfully.
- Any quarantine event.
- The final DISM and SFC results.
