Riot’s Project K is now Riftbound: League of Legends Trading Card Game, a physical card game built around League champions and battles for control of a battlefield. It has a clear hook for League fans and supports multiplayer play, beginner products and organized events. But whether it can rival Pokémon or Magic in reach or staying power remains an open question: the official information available does not establish comparable sales, player counts or market share.

What happened to Project K?

Project K was the game’s working title. Riot now publishes information under the name Riftbound: League of Legends Trading Card Game. Riot named UVS Games as an international publishing and distribution partner for English-speaking markets. The original announcement described English-language plans for 2025 and wider regional expansion in 2026; those were rollout plans, not confirmation of current stock in every market. Riot’s partner announcement explains the original arrangement.

How Riftbound plays—and what might set it apart

Riftbound is a physical TCG in which players choose a champion and use a deck of units and spells to contest battlefields. Riot’s gameplay guide describes play for two to four players, giving it room for multiplayer sessions as well as head-to-head games. The appeal is therefore not just the League license: familiar champions provide a way in, while battlefield contests and multiplayer offer a distinct play experience to explore.

For current rules and format details, use Riot’s gameplay guide and Rules Hub. The linked legacy Core Rules page directs readers to the current Rules Hub for up-to-date rules, so older wording should not be treated as definitive.

What should a new player buy?

Riot’s official materials identify three entry paths: Proving Grounds, preconstructed Champion Decks and booster products. Proving Grounds is the clearest contained introduction: Riot presents it for two to four players. A Champion Deck is another preconstructed option. Boosters can add cards, but opening random packs is not a dependable way to learn the game or assemble a particular deck.

  • For a first shared session: consider Proving Grounds, which is designed as an introduction for two to four players.
  • For a ready-to-play deck: look at a preconstructed Champion Deck.
  • For expanding a collection: boosters are an optional route, not a guaranteed shortcut to specific cards.

Riot said on March 31, 2026, that Origins and Proving Grounds reprints were rolling out regionally and that it intended to keep printing early sets until supply reached healthier quantities. That dated update is not a promise of present availability. Check the current official store and local retailers before buying. Sleeves and a deck box are optional for protecting and carrying cards; verify that any accessory fits Riftbound cards, since the cited materials do not establish their dimensions or endorse a particular brand. Riot’s reprint update gives the dated supply context.

Can Riftbound compete with Pokémon and Magic?

It has ingredients that could help it find an audience: League’s recognizable champions, a multiplayer option, preconstructed products and a documented organized-play program. Riot’s May 29, 2026 roadmap listed releases and organized-play events across regions, while warning that plans, dates and details could change. A roadmap shows an effort to build an ecosystem; it does not show that a community has reached the scale or durability of a long-established competitor.

The comparison has to be separated into two questions. As a game, Riftbound can offer League fans a reason to try a physical TCG and players a different multiplayer format. As a market challenger, it would need accessible products, dependable local supply and recurring organized play in the places where players live. Availability depends on market, language, retailer and current stock, and Riot’s rollout announcements describe stages rather than universal access.

The official sources cited here do not provide comparable sales, active-player, retention or market-share figures for Riftbound, Pokémon and Magic. That means there is no evidence here to say Riftbound has already matched either game commercially or culturally. Whether it becomes a durable peer will depend on how well its play experience and support translate into sustained local communities. See Riot’s 2026 roadmap for its dated plans and the publisher’s change caveat.
