Riot Games’ second annual global Teamfight Tactics Open took place December 13–15, 2024, at The Venetian Macao. It brought an announced 512-player open bracket and a $300,000 prize pool to the three-day event. The Macao Open has passed; Riot’s 2026 TFT Open is scheduled for Las Vegas, December 11–13.
When and where was the TFT Macao Open?
Riot held the Macao Open at The Venetian Macao from December 13 to 15, 2024. Riot described it as the second annual global TFT LAN, following the inaugural Vegas Open. The event combined a large open tournament with convention-style activities for players and spectators. Riot’s announcement set out the dates, venue and headline tournament details.
How many players competed, and what was at stake?
Riot announced an open bracket of 512 competitors and a $300,000 prize pool. The winner was to receive $100,000, the Tactician’s Belt and the Macao Open title; the top 128 players were slated to share the prize money. Those figures describe the announced 2024 allocation, not a current offer. Competitors played Set 13, Into the Arcane, which Riot said would launch shortly before the event. Riot’s format and prize-pool announcement provides the tournament details.
How did the tournament format work?
Seeding and lobby rounds
Initial seeding used players’ Set 12 Magic n’ Mayhem rankings. After the first round, Riot planned to use a snake draft based on points earned to assign players to subsequent lobbies. Each game awarded points by final placement: 8 for first, then one fewer point per place, down to 1 for eighth. The field narrowed through successive lobby rounds to a final eight-player lobby.

The checkmate final
The final used a checkmate condition: a player first had to reach 20 points and then win a game. Reaching 20 points alone did not decide the championship; the player also had to secure a victory in a game after hitting that threshold.
What could spectators do at the Macao Open?
The tournament was the centrepiece of a broader in-person gathering. Riot’s event-week guide listed free game stations, side events, developer panels on set design and the competitive pipeline, exclusive TFT merchandise, photo booths, cosplay meetups, themed snacks and minigames. Attendees could also try a Project K demo and buy an Arcane-inspired Chinese-language collectible card set onsite. These were activities and offerings advertised for the 2024 event.

Why the Macao event mattered beyond TFT
Riot’s 2024 guide presented Project K as a collectible-card-game preview at the event. In its July 2026 Convergence Fest announcement, Riot described Riftbound’s growth from its debut alongside the Macao Open two years earlier, and listed card packs, play, trading and community activities for the 2026 gathering. That connection makes Macao part of Riftbound’s origin story; the Macao Open itself was a TFT tournament, not a Riftbound competition. Riot’s Convergence Fest announcement covers the later event and card-game connection.
How the Macao Open fits into Riot’s current TFT calendar
Riot’s Competitive Operations page describes the TFT Open as a flagship community event that moves to a different host city at the end of each year. Its current listing identifies the 2026 edition as the TFT Vegas Open; Riot’s July 2026 announcement schedules it in Las Vegas for December 11–13. The Macao dates, tickets and prize allocation above are historical details from 2024, not information about the 2026 event. Riot’s Competitive Operations page lists the current series context.

What the previous Vegas Open suggests—and does not prove
In a GamesBeat interview published July 14, 2024, and updated June 18, 2025, Riot global head of esports for Teamfight Tactics and 2XKO Michael Sherman said the event experience was designed to broaden esports interest among TFT players, including through timing, qualification and co-streaming. GamesBeat reported that the 2023 Vegas Open’s 512 competitor bundles sold out in seven seconds and that more than 1,000 spectators attended. Those are figures for the Vegas event, not Macao attendance or ticket-sales statistics. GamesBeat’s interview reports Sherman’s comments and the prior-event figures.
