Classic RLCraft 2.9.3 needs 3–4GB of JVM memory, while RLCraft Dregora v1.1.2b needs 6–8GB and its project recommends 8GB for servers. Those figures are allocations for the Minecraft Java process, not the total memory in the computer. Reserve additional physical RAM for the operating system, Java overhead, file cache, and any other programs on the machine. The correct server pack, Minecraft version, Forge build, and configuration are just as important as the heap size.

Quick answer: choose the allocation for your pack

Pack and release Minecraft version Published JVM allocation What that means for the host
Classic RLCraft v2.9.3 1.12.2 3–4GB; the default 1GB is explicitly described as insufficient The machine must have more than 4GB available so the operating system and other services are not starved.
RLCraft Dregora v1.1.2b 1.12.2 6–8GB; 8GB is the stated server recommendation An 8GB computer cannot normally dedicate all 8GB to Java. Plan for a larger host with headroom.

These are pack-level recommendations, not a guaranteed player-count formula. Neither project page publishes an official “RAM per player” multiplier. Player count, view distance, exploration speed, loaded chunks, farms, chunk-generation activity, and other software can change actual demand, so do not turn the figures into a promise that a particular number of players will always fit.

Which RLCraft installation are you running?

Classic RLCraft 2.9.3

The original RLCraft project lists v2.9.3 for Minecraft 1.12.2. Its server pack was released June 27, 2023. The project page says the default 1GB allocation is “NOT enough” and recommends allocating 3 to 4GB. If a guide or hosting panel says only “RLCraft,” check that it means this classic 2.9.x line rather than Dregora.

RLCraft Dregora v1.1.2b

Dregora is a separate, newer RLCraft-derived pack, not a patch that uses the classic memory target. Its project page lists v1.1.2b for Minecraft 1.12.2 and a server pack dated December 2, 2025. The published instruction is to allocate 6–8GB, warning that higher or lower values may cause performance issues; servers are currently recommended to use 8GB for best performance.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Because the two packs have different content and memory guidance, copy the allocation from the page for the exact client and server release you installed. Do not select Dregora’s 8GB setting for a classic installation merely because a control panel offers it, and do not reduce Dregora to the classic 3–4GB target.

JVM memory versus total physical RAM

A setting such as -Xmx4G limits the Java heap. It does not reserve every byte the operating system, Java runtime, native libraries, networking, disk cache, or monitoring tools may need. If you give a small machine nearly all of its memory to Minecraft, the host can begin swapping or terminate processes even when the heap number appears correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the published allocation as the Java maximum, then leave a deliberate margin on the host. For classic RLCraft, a machine with only 4GB total cannot safely provide a full 4GB heap. For Dregora, an 8GB total machine cannot safely provide the recommended 8GB heap while also running an operating system and administration tools. A larger local computer or a managed server with memory beyond the stated heap target is required for reliable headroom.

  • Measure the host’s total physical RAM, not just the amount shown in a hosting plan’s Minecraft field.
  • Subtract memory needed by the operating system and every service sharing the machine.
  • Set the Java maximum only after that subtraction; leave room for short bursts during world generation and exploration.
  • Watch actual memory pressure and swap activity rather than assuming a larger heap automatically improves performance.

Recommended allocations by common question

Is 4GB enough for RLCraft?

For classic RLCraft 2.9.x, 4GB is the top end of the project’s 3–4GB recommendation and is the sensible starting maximum when the host has additional memory available. It is not a universal guarantee for every player count or workload. For Dregora v1.1.2b, 4GB is below the published 6–8GB range and should not be treated as an adequate target.

Can I run an RLCraft server with 8GB of RAM?

For classic RLCraft, 8GB of total machine memory can be workable if the Java heap is kept within the 3–4GB recommendation and the rest is left for the operating system and other software. For Dregora, the project recommends an 8GB Java allocation, so an 8GB total computer does not provide enough headroom for that target. You need more physical RAM than the heap setting.

Do I need 1GB per player?

No official source cited for these releases establishes a reliable per-player rule. A fixed multiplier can mislead because one player generating new terrain may create more load than several players staying in already loaded areas. Use the pack recommendation first, then observe server behavior under the way your group actually plays.

Install the matching server pack

Memory tuning cannot repair a mismatched or incomplete server installation. Use the server pack that corresponds to the client/modpack version. Dregora’s project instructions specifically say to download and use the Server Pack, not the Client pack, and to read the included SERVER README OR DIE.txt file.

  1. Identify the exact client release each player will launch, including whether it is classic RLCraft 2.9.3 or Dregora v1.1.2b.
  2. Download the server pack for that same release. Do not rename a client installation and assume it is a server distribution.
  3. Extract the pack into a dedicated server directory with enough free disk space for the initial files and the expanding world.
  4. Read the pack’s server README before changing launch arguments; it may specify scripts, libraries, or first-start actions unique to that release.
  5. Start the server once, accept the Minecraft EULA when required, stop it cleanly, and then edit the generated configuration files.

Classic RLCraft Forge and configuration requirements

The classic project specifies Forge 1.12.2 version 14.23.5.2860 or newer. Use a Forge build compatible with the server pack rather than substituting a modern Forge release simply because it has a higher version number.

Open server.properties and set:

enable-command-block=true

The project author warns that leaving command blocks disabled can prevent certain structures from generating correctly and can result in missing villagers. This setting affects world generation and gameplay content; it is not a cosmetic preference. Change it before creating a world you intend to keep, because correcting the setting later may not restore structures that failed to generate.

Choosing the Java heap setting

Classic RLCraft launch arguments

Set the maximum heap to a value inside the project’s 3–4GB recommendation, provided the host can spare it. A typical maximum argument is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
-Xmx4G

The exact launcher script and the minimum heap setting depend on the server pack. Keep the maximum and minimum values in the syntax expected by that pack’s script, and verify that the command actually starts the intended Java executable. A panel showing a number is not proof that the argument reached the process; check the startup log or process command line.

Dregora launch arguments

Dregora’s published range is 6–8GB, with 8GB recommended for servers. Set the maximum within that range only when the physical host has enough unused memory. If the host cannot provide that allocation while retaining operating-system headroom, move the server to a larger machine instead of forcing an oversized heap onto a small one.

Older wiki advice

The RLCraft wiki’s manual-installation page suggests changing -Xmx2G to -Xmx4G and warns that going above 4GB can cause Java memory-leak issues. That page was last updated for v2.8.2, before the classic 2.9.3 server-pack guidance and before Dregora v1.1.2b. Treat it as supplementary historical advice, not as a newer requirement that overrides the project page for your installed release.

How player activity changes the practical requirement

The published numbers describe the pack, not a fixed capacity test. Keep these workload differences in mind when deciding whether your host has enough reserve:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • New-terrain exploration: generating and saving chunks can create temporary CPU, disk, and memory pressure.
  • Many loaded chunks: a high view or simulation distance and players spread across the map keep more world data active.
  • Entity-heavy bases: farms, villagers, storage systems, and hostile mobs can add tick work that RAM alone cannot solve.
  • Shared hosting: control panels, backups, databases, proxies, and other game servers consume physical memory outside the Minecraft heap.
  • Local desktop use: a host that also runs a browser, voice chat, recording software, or a game needs more reserve than a dedicated headless machine.

When performance degrades, distinguish memory exhaustion from CPU or disk bottlenecks. A larger -Xmx value cannot fix a processor that is spending too long on world ticks, a slow disk handling chunk saves, or a network connection that is dropping packets.

Practical sizing procedure

  1. Confirm the pack: write down the exact release and whether it is classic 2.9.3 or Dregora v1.1.2b.
  2. Apply the project target: use 3–4GB for classic or 6–8GB for Dregora, with 8GB the Dregora server recommendation.
  3. Check physical capacity: verify that total RAM exceeds the heap target by enough to run the operating system and every companion service without swapping.
  4. Install the matching server pack: follow its README and use the required Forge build.
  5. Configure before world creation: for classic RLCraft, set enable-command-block=true.
  6. Start with a controlled test: connect with the intended client version, explore a representative area, and watch memory use, swap, tick time, and logs.
  7. Adjust the host, not just the heap: if the system is paging or killing processes, reduce competing services or move to a machine with more physical RAM. If memory is comfortable but ticks are slow, investigate CPU, disk, entity counts, and loaded chunks.

Troubleshooting common mistakes

The server stops during startup

Confirm that the server pack, Forge version, Java runtime, and launch script belong to the same Minecraft 1.12.2 release. A memory increase will not resolve missing libraries or an incompatible mod set. Read the first error in the log rather than relying on the final shutdown message.

Players see missing structures or villagers

On classic RLCraft, stop the server and verify enable-command-block=true in server.properties. The setting must be present before relevant terrain generates. Changing it cannot guarantee that already-generated chunks will be rebuilt.

The host becomes unresponsive after raising RAM

The heap may be consuming the memory needed by the operating system. Lower the allocation to the pack’s supported range, stop unrelated services, disable swapping only if you understand the host’s recovery plan, or migrate to a machine with more physical RAM. For Dregora, do not interpret the 8GB recommendation as permission to allocate all 8GB on an 8GB computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Performance is poor despite enough free RAM

Check CPU saturation, disk latency, loaded-chunk growth, entity counts, and network conditions. The official recommendations do not claim that RAM is the sole performance limit, and increasing the heap can mask rather than solve a different bottleneck.

Bottom line for planning a server

Use the exact pack’s published target: 3–4GB for classic RLCraft 2.9.3, or 6–8GB for Dregora v1.1.2b with 8GB recommended for servers. Treat those numbers as Java heap allocations. Buy or rent a host with additional physical memory, install the matching server pack and Forge build, and configure classic RLCraft’s command blocks before generating the world. Because there is no official RAM-per-player formula, validate the setup under your group’s real exploration and chunk-loading behavior instead of promising capacity from a single number.
