The pack is listed by Feed the Beast as pack ID 95 for Minecraft 1.18.2 on Forge. The exact Forge build attached to the version you download is more important than a generic “latest 1.18.2” download, so confirm it in the pack manifest or the FTB/CurseForge version listing before installing.

Prepare the server on a machine that can stay online and has enough free memory for the operating system as well as Minecraft. A separate server computer is not mandatory, but running the game client and a modded server on the same machine leaves less headroom.
| Item | Requirement or guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Modpack | FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.18, pack ID 95, Minecraft 1.18.2 | The client and server must be built from the same pack release. |
| Java | Java 17 JDK or JRE | Java 17 is required for this pack. Java 8 is not a substitute. |
| Memory | 4 GB minimum; 6 GB recommended | Forge and a large modpack need more memory than a vanilla server. |
| Operating system | Windows, Linux, or macOS with permission to run Java and write files | The Forge installer creates scripts and configuration files in the server directory. |
| Forge | The Forge 1.18.2 build named by the selected pack release | Using a different build can stop the server before it loads the mods. |
Keep the server in its own folder, such as C:MinecraftDirewolf20-1.18 on Windows or ~/minecraft/direwolf20-1.18 on Linux and macOS. Avoid placing it inside a synchronized cloud folder while you are setting it up; interrupted synchronization can corrupt files while the server is writing them.

Identify the correct pack and Forge build
Do this before running an installer. “Direwolf20 1.18” is a pack name, not a single immutable file. A client update can change the mod list, configuration, and required Forge build.
Use the same pack release everywhere
- Install or download the 1.18 pack release you intend to play.
- Record its complete version number, not just “1.18.”
- Open the release manifest or version details and note the Minecraft and Forge versions.
- Give that exact version number to every player. Do not let some players update automatically while others remain on an older release.
The Feed the Beast listing identifies the pack as Minecraft 1.18.2 on Forge. That establishes the game branch, but it does not by itself prove which Forge build a particular current download expects.

Why you should not blindly choose a Forge number
A dated third-party listing shows Forge 1.18.2 build 40.1.0 as Recommended and 40.1.84 as Latest. An unofficial changelog copy mentions 40.2.0 as “Recommended Build 2,” but that entry has lower confidence and should not override the pack’s own manifest. Treat those numbers as possibilities, not as a universal answer. If the manifest specifies another build, use the manifest’s value.
| Build information | How to treat it |
|---|---|
| 40.1.0 | Shown as Recommended in a dated listing; use only if your selected pack release specifies it. |
| 40.1.84 | Shown as Latest in that same dated listing; “latest” does not mean compatible with every pack release. |
| 40.2.0 | Reported as Recommended Build 2 by an unofficial changelog copy; verify independently in the pack metadata. |
| Your release’s manifest value | Preferred source for the server you are actually installing. |
The current official FTB self-hosting guidance is written for a 1.21 NeoForge pack, not this 1.18.2 Forge pack. Do not transfer its version-specific commands, memory advice, or folder assumptions without checking that they apply to your release.
Install Java 17 and verify it
Install a Java 17 JDK or JRE before installing Forge. A JDK is convenient if you expect to use diagnostic tools, but the server itself requires a Java 17 runtime.

Windows
- Install a 64-bit Java 17 distribution.
- Open Command Prompt and run
java -version. - Confirm that the output reports version 17. If it reports version 8, the old Java executable is earlier in your system PATH.
- Run
where javato see which executable Windows is selecting. Correct the PATH or plan to call the Java 17 executable by its full path in the server script.
Linux or macOS
- Install a Java 17 package using your operating system’s normal package manager or Java distribution.
- Run
java -versionin a terminal. - If several versions are installed, select Java 17 with the operating system’s Java-selection mechanism, or use the absolute path to the Java 17 binary when launching Forge.
Do not continue while the command reports Java 8 or another major version. Modded 1.18.2 servers are designed around Java 17, and an incorrect runtime can produce misleading class-version or startup errors.

Download the Forge installer that matches the pack’s Minecraft and Forge versions. Place the installer in the empty server folder you created.
- Open a terminal or Command Prompt in the server folder.
- Run the Forge installer in server mode. The pattern is
java -jar forge-<version>-installer.jar --installServer; replace<version>with the exact Forge filename you downloaded. - Wait for the installer to finish. For Forge 1.17 and newer, it normally creates a server launch script and a JVM-arguments file in addition to the libraries and server files.
- Keep the installer and the generated files together until the server has started successfully. You can archive the installer later for repeat setup.
Do not rename individual Forge libraries or move only the main jar to another folder. The generated script expects the directory structure created by the installer.
First launch and the EULA
Run the generated Windows batch file or Unix shell script once. The first run may stop after creating configuration files and an EULA file. Read the Minecraft EULA, then set the EULA acknowledgement in the generated file only if you agree to it. Launch the script again after saving the change. The exact script filename can vary with the Forge installer, so use the file it generated rather than inventing a replacement command.
Put the Direwolf20 files in the server directory
Forge by itself is only the mod loader. The Direwolf20 pack supplies the mods and configuration that make the server the intended pack.

Copy the server-relevant folders
- Locate the installed client instance for the exact Direwolf20 release.
- Copy the client instance’s
modsandconfigfolders into the Forge server folder. - Also copy pack data folders that exist in that release, such as
defaultconfigs, kubejs, andscripts. These folders are common in modpacks, but verify their presence and contents against your selected release instead of creating empty folders. - Keep the server’s generated libraries, launch scripts, and JVM-arguments file. Do not replace those with files from another Forge version.
- If you already have a world, copy it only after the server has started cleanly once. Keep a backup before allowing a new pack version to open that world.
The folder list is release-dependent. A missing folder is not an error by itself; copying an unrelated folder from another Direwolf20 version is more dangerous than leaving an optional folder absent.
Remove client-only mods
Many modpacks place client enhancements in the same mods folder as server-capable mods. Remove client-only entries from the server copy. Typical examples include minimaps, shader loaders, HUD and interface enhancements, zoom utilities, and purely visual or sound-effect mods. The exact list is pack-version-specific, so check each mod’s description or the pack’s server files when available.
Do not remove a mod merely because it displays something on the client. Some gameplay mods have both client and server components. If you are unsure, start the server and use the error message to identify a mod that explicitly declares itself client-only.
Allocate memory without starving the machine
The pack listing specifies at least 4 GB of RAM and recommends 6 GB. Those figures describe the server allocation, not the total physical memory required by the computer. The operating system, Java overhead, and a simultaneously running client need memory too.
Set the JVM arguments
Forge 1.18.2 commonly creates a JVM-arguments file alongside the launch script. Edit that file and set the initial and maximum heap values, for example:

-Xms6G
-Xmx6G
The setup guide example uses -Xms8G -Xmx8G. Eight gigabytes is an example allocation, not a requirement; use it only when the machine has enough free RAM after accounting for the operating system and other applications. A computer with 8 GB total RAM should not normally give all 8 GB to Java.
- Use 4 GB only as the minimum starting point for a lightly populated server.
- Use 6 GB when the host has adequate physical memory and you want to match the pack’s recommendation.
- Increase the allocation only after observing memory-related shutdowns and confirming that the host still has headroom.
Keep the values in the generated file that the launch script actually reads. Editing an unused batch file or adding flags to a different command will have no effect.
Launch and perform a first-run check
- Start the generated script from the server folder.
- Watch the console until Forge finishes loading and reports that the server is ready for connections.
- Stop it cleanly from the console before making file changes. Avoid closing the terminal or killing Java while the world is saving.
- Start it again and confirm that the same result occurs without manual intervention.
Connect with a matching client
Install the identical Direwolf20 release on the client, including its Minecraft 1.18.2 version and Forge build. Connect using the host machine’s address and the port configured in the server’s properties. A client with a different mod list may fail during the handshake, disconnect immediately, or display a missing-mod error.

Repair procedure
- Open the server folder and inspect the batch file in a text editor.
- Find the Java path or jar filename in the command.
- Replace the nonexistent Java path with the full path to the Java 17 executable, or use
javaafter correcting PATH. - Ensure the jar reference names a file that actually exists in the server folder, such as
minecraft_server.1.18.2.jarwhen that is the generated filename. - Save the file and run
java -versionin the same environment to confirm that Java 17 is being selected.
Do not solve this error by installing Java 8. That can make the script appear to progress while leaving the modded server incompatible with its required runtime.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The script says Java is not recognized. | Java is missing or PATH points somewhere else. | Install Java 17, run java -version, and correct PATH or use the absolute executable path. |
| Unsupported class-version or similar Java error. | The server is running Java 8 or another incorrect major version. | Verify the executable used by the script, not just the version installed on the computer. |
The script references a missing jre/... path. |
A bundled path from the setup package does not exist on this machine. | Edit the script to use the real Java 17 executable and an existing server jar. |
| Forge starts, then reports missing mods. | The mods folder is incomplete or the client and server releases differ. |
Copy the exact release’s server files and compare the client and server mod lists. |
| A mod is marked client-only. | A visual, HUD, shader, minimap, zoom, or similar client component was copied to the server. | Remove that mod from the server copy; retain it on clients only if the pack allows it. |
| The client disconnects during login. | Version, Forge build, configuration, or mod-list mismatch. | Check all four against the selected pack release before changing network settings. |
| The process exits with memory errors or becomes unresponsive. | Insufficient heap or too little RAM left for the host system. | Confirm at least 4 GB is allocated, target 6 GB when possible, and leave memory for the operating system and other applications. |
| The server works locally but not from another device. | Firewall, address, or router configuration rather than Forge. | Test on the local network first, then allow the configured server port through the host firewall and configure external access deliberately. |
Operating and updating the server safely
Keep a version record
Write down the pack version, Minecraft version, Forge build, Java version, and memory flags in a text file beside the server. This makes it possible to reproduce a working installation when a player reports a mismatch.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Back up before changing versions
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world folder and the server configuration, and preserve the existing mods, config, defaultconfigs, kubejs, and scripts folders before installing a newer pack release. Test the new release in a separate directory first. Never assume that a world opened by one modpack release can be safely rolled back after blocks, items, or dimensions have changed.
Update clients and server together
When the pack publisher releases an update, change the server and every client to that same release as a coordinated operation. Updating only the server can create missing-mod or registry errors; updating only a client creates the same problem in the opposite direction.
When managed hosting is a better fit
Managed game hosts sometimes offer a preconfigured Direwolf20 1.18 installation. This can remove Java installation, firewall, uptime, and backup work, but the underlying compatibility rules do not change: confirm that the host provides the 1.18.2 Forge pack release you need, identify the included Forge build, and verify its memory allocation. A one-click label is not proof that the host has the same pack version as your players.
Self-hosting is usually the better choice when you need full control over files, scripts, backups, or testing. Managed hosting is convenient when the server must remain online while your own computer is off and you do not want to maintain the Java and networking environment.
Quick Recap
Final pre-launch checklist
- The selected pack is FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.18, Minecraft 1.18.2, and the release number is recorded.
- The Forge build comes from that release’s manifest or version listing, not from an unrelated “latest” download.
java -versionreports Java 17 in the same environment used by the launch script.- The Forge installer was run with
--installServerin the dedicated server folder. - The pack’s
mods, config, and any presentdefaultconfigs, kubejs, orscriptsfolders were copied from the exact client release. - Client-only visual, HUD, shader, minimap, zoom, and sound-effect mods were excluded from the server copy.
- The JVM arguments allocate at least 4 GB, with 6 GB preferred when the host has enough physical memory.
- The server has completed a clean first launch and EULA step.
- A matching client can connect locally before you troubleshoot internet access.
- A backup exists before you open an established world with a different pack release.
