Where the requirement applies, Roblox says users can complete a facial age estimation, while users aged 13 or older may instead verify with their own government-issued photo ID. The prompt and available options can vary by region and account, so follow the instructions shown in your Roblox app.
Why Roblox is asking for an age check
Roblox announced a rollout requiring age checks to use chat wherever chat is available. Its help information describes age checks as a way to enable features such as chat and connections with people in similar age groups or Trusted Friends. The precise age groups and communication rules depend on the feature and may vary by region.
Roblox’s January 7, 2026 announcement describes age-based chat rules that limit communication between adults and children younger than 16. That is not a universal description of every account’s chat settings: check the in-app prompt and Roblox’s current help information for the rules that apply to your account. Roblox says age checks are needed for the features they unlock; if you do not complete one, access to those features may not be available.
Age-check options: facial estimation or ID
| Option | Who can use it | What it involves | Device or correction considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Facial age estimation | Users offered the option in their account flow. | Follow the in-app “Continue with selfie” flow; a camera captures facial images or video for age estimation. | A working camera is needed. Roblox says you can scan a QR code to move the process to a camera-equipped mobile device. Some child accounts may have a parent-control correction route. |
| Government-issued ID verification | Users aged 13 or older. | Use your own government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or residency card. The flow captures the document and a selfie to check that you match its photo. | Roblox lists ID verification as a correction route for eligible users when an age result is wrong. Do not use another person’s ID. |
The sources do not establish one method as best for every user. Consider what data each route asks you to provide, whether you are eligible for ID verification, and which option you are comfortable using. A webcam is not necessarily needed: Roblox describes transferring the facial-estimation flow to a mobile device using a QR code.

What happens to facial images and ID information?
Roblox says images and video submitted for facial age estimation are analyzed to estimate age and deleted after processing; it says Persona processes the facial-estimation material. These are Roblox’s disclosures, not an independent audit of all data handling. For details on collection, use, sharing, and retention, consult Roblox’s Biometric and Facial Media Data Privacy Notice and the current age-check instructions.
For ID verification, Roblox instructs users to submit their own government-issued document. Review the privacy information shown in the verification flow before proceeding if you have questions about how the document and selfie are handled.

Does an age check bypass chat filters?
No. The available Roblox statements describe age checks as a way to apply age-based access and communication settings, not as a way to remove filters. Roblox says advanced filters are designed to block or remove content that violates its standards, and its September 2025 safety statement says it proactively monitors text chat and filters public chat. These moderation measures remain separate from age checks.
Age grouping, content filtering and moderation, and parental controls and reporting are distinct safety layers. An age check does not guarantee that every interaction will be safe or that every objectionable message will be stopped. Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer and VP of User and Discovery Product stated in January 2026: “No system (including Roblox) is perfect.”

If the age result is wrong or the check fails
Roblox says it may prompt a user to check again if it detects a discrepancy with the estimated age. Its listed correction routes depend on age and account eligibility: users aged 13 or older can use ID verification, while some child accounts may be able to correct an age through linked parental controls. Roblox notes that some changes are limited to one use.
- Review the age-check and account settings shown in Roblox and follow the current instructions for your account.
- If the account belongs to a child, Roblox recommends linking a parent account before helping. The child—not the parent—should be in front of the camera for the child’s facial estimate.
- If eligible, use the ID route with your own government-issued photo ID, or use the parental-control correction option if Roblox makes it available for that account.
- If the issue remains unresolved, follow Roblox’s official support instructions. Roblox says support cannot manually verify IDs or change account settings.
Roblox age-check figures and what they do—and do not—show
In its January 7, 2026 announcement, Roblox reported a 1.4-year mean absolute error for users younger than 18, based on testing by the UK Age Check Certification Scheme. That is a reported average from the stated testing; it does not mean every individual age estimate will be within 1.4 years.

Roblox reported on February 5, 2026 that 45% of its 144 million global daily active users had completed an age check. Among age-checked daily active users, it reported 35% younger than 13, 38% aged 13 to 17, and 27% aged 18 or older. Roblox cautioned that those cohort shares may change as more users complete checks; they are company-reported figures, not independent estimates of all Roblox users.
