Yes, Roblox’s facial age-estimation system is real—but it is no longer simply a feature “coming” for teens. Announced in July 2025, it is now part of Roblox’s broader age-check system. As of January 2026, users worldwide must complete an age check to use Roblox chat. Facial age estimation is one option; eligible users aged 13 and older can also verify with government-issued ID.
The check estimates an age range rather than identifying a person’s exact age. Roblox then uses that age group to apply chat restrictions, content access, and newer account protections such as Roblox Kids and Roblox Select.

What Roblox’s age estimation actually does
Roblox’s system combines three related features:
- Facial age estimation: a selfie-style video is analyzed to estimate the user’s age.
- Age checks: the wider verification process, which can use facial estimation or government ID.
- Age-based protections: Roblox uses the resulting age category to control chat, game-content access, and parental features.
Roblox first announced facial age estimation and Trusted Connections in July 2025. The system now applies across age groups, not only to teenagers.

An age check is required for Roblox chat, but a face scan is not the only way to complete it. Roblox says users can continue using the platform without completing a face scan if they do not need chat or another age-gated feature. Users aged 13 and older may choose government-ID verification instead, where that option is available.

Some regions require parental approval for facial age estimation, and availability and age boundaries can vary by country. Roblox’s age-check documentation is the best place to confirm the rules shown on a particular account.
How to complete Roblox facial age estimation
- Log in to Roblox.
- Open Settings. On desktop, select the gear icon in the upper-right. On mobile, select More (…) in the lower-right, then Settings.
- Open Account info.
- Under Age Group, select Continue with selfie.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to record the selfie video.
If available, choose Continue with ID to use government-issued identification instead. Roblox limits ID verification to users aged 13 and older. Its facial-estimation process is handled through Persona, according to Roblox’s support documentation.
Which age groups does Roblox use?
Roblox’s facial-estimation page lists these bands:

Its general age-check documentation presents some of these as broader user-facing categories, including “under 9” and “18+.” The exact categories and boundaries may differ by region, so the bands above should not be treated as a universal chart for every account.

What changes for teenagers?
| Age group | Account treatment | Communication and content |
|---|---|---|
| 13–15 | Generally placed in Roblox Select | Access to age-appropriate games; chat with similar age groups and Trusted Friends, subject to region, chat type, and settings |
| 16–17 | Standard Roblox account category | Broader game access, excluding 18+ Restricted content; age-based communication still applies |
| 18+ | Standard Roblox account category | Adult access subject to Roblox’s rules and regional availability |
Roblox does not describe this as an exact same-age-only system. Communication depends on the type of chat—such as experience, party, voice, or Trusted Friends chat—as well as location, parental controls, and account status. In a submission to U.K. regulator Ofcom, Roblox described nearby age-band communication rather than unrestricted contact between teens and all adults.
What are Roblox Kids and Roblox Select?
In June 2026, Roblox began rolling out age-based account types for younger users. Roblox Kids is intended approximately for ages 5–8, while Roblox Select is intended approximately for ages 9–15. The boundaries can vary by region.
These account types combine age checks with content ratings, communication defaults, moderation, and parental controls. Roblox’s support page explains the options available in each market.

Trusted Connections are not identity verification
Roblox introduced Trusted Connections as a way for users aged 13 and older to connect with people they know and trust. Adding such contacts requires an age check using a video selfie.

Parents can link their account to gain visibility into a teen’s connections and activity. However, “Trusted” is an account-level safety relationship—not proof that someone is personally known, safe, or verified in the real world.
What happens to the selfie?
Roblox says Persona processes the selfie-style video, that Roblox does not receive or store biometric data from the facial age-estimation process, and that the images and video are deleted after processing. Those are Roblox’s stated data-handling practices, not an independent audit finding.
The distinction matters: a face video is still processed to produce an estimated age result. Families should review the applicable Roblox and regional privacy information before choosing facial estimation or ID verification.

Roblox documents several correction paths:
- A user aged 13 or older who disputes the estimate can verify their birthday with government ID.
- An under-13 account can change its birthday through the account-information controls.
- A linked parent can update a child’s birthday if the child is under 18, although Roblox says the parent can do this once.
- If someone who reported being over 13 is estimated as under 13, Roblox provides a 48-hour grace period before officially changing the age group. The user can also accept the result immediately.
- If facial estimation cannot determine an age, Roblox directs the user to ID verification.
Roblox says customer support cannot manually verify IDs, remove existing verifications, or directly update account settings. The available remedy therefore depends on the account’s age category, ID eligibility, and whether a parent account is linked.

Will Roblox ask for another check?
Possibly. Roblox says users may occasionally be asked to repeat facial estimation or ID verification to retain access to Trusted Friends and expressive chat features. A new check may also be triggered if the platform detects a discrepancy with the estimated age.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How accurate is facial age estimation?
Roblox told the Associated Press that, for users roughly between ages 5 and 25, the system can estimate age within one or two years, while acknowledging that some users may fall outside the model’s expected range.
In its submission to Ofcom, Roblox cited a 1.4-year mean absolute error for users younger than 18, based on testing referenced from the U.K. Age Check Certification Scheme. That is an average-error measure reported by Roblox—not a guarantee that every user will be placed in the correct age band.
Results may be affected by lighting, camera quality, angle, image clarity, facial development, and being close to an age-band boundary. The published average also does not establish identical performance for every region or demographic group.

What the system cannot prevent
Age checks can make it harder to bypass rules using a false birthday, and they can limit some unsolicited contact between adults and younger users. They are not a complete safety solution.
They cannot reliably prevent account sharing, a child using an adult’s account, an adult using a younger person’s account, or users switching accounts and devices. They also cannot eliminate grooming within permitted age ranges, off-platform contact, harmful behavior inside games, or every moderation failure. Roblox acknowledged account sharing and device switching as circumvention risks in its Ofcom response.
Update timeline
- July 2025: Roblox announced facial age estimation, Trusted Connections, and related teen-safety features.
- January 2026: Roblox said age checks were required worldwide for access to chat.
- June 2026: Roblox began rolling out Roblox Kids and Roblox Select for younger users.
Because the rollout and account categories vary by region, the controls displayed in one country may not exactly match those shown elsewhere.
