A lawsuit brought on behalf of a 13-year-old boy alleges that a predator used Roblox and Discord to groom him and that the platforms failed to provide adequate safeguards. The complaint called Roblox a “digital and real-life nightmare for children,” but that phrase is advocacy in a lawsuit—not a court finding. The case was reported by Malwarebytes on February 26, 2025.

What does the lawsuit allege?

According to Malwarebytes’ February 26, 2025 report, the boy joined Roblox and Discord in 2023. His parents allegedly discovered in 2024 that he had been groomed into sending explicit pictures and videos to a 27-year-old man. The lawsuit further alleges that the man discovered the boy’s location through Roblox, after which the family moved. These are allegations described in the report, not facts established by a court. Malwarebytes’ report

The complaint accuses Roblox and Discord of failing to provide adequate protections against grooming and exploitation. The available account does not establish that a court has accepted those claims or determined either company’s liability.

What was the alleged role of Roblox’s “whisper” feature?

Attorney Anna Marie Murphy described the alleged initial contact as taking place through Roblox’s “whisper function.” Malwarebytes quoted her saying that a stranger could enter a game with the boy and send a direct message, and that the first contact included a request for a naked picture. That is the plaintiff’s attorney’s account of the allegation, not an adjudicated description of what happened or a finding about how the feature worked. Malwarebytes’ report

Why did the lawsuit call Roblox a “real-life nightmare”?

The phrase comes from the complaint’s characterization of Roblox. Malwarebytes reproduced the complaint’s claim that the company’s growth had relied on assurances to parents that its app was safe, followed by the assertion that “Roblox is a digital and real-life nightmare for children.” Anapol Weiss, the law firm representing the plaintiff, also alleged that Roblox’s “expansive and unsupervised ecosystem” enabled predators and harmful content. Both statements are allegations and advocacy from the plaintiff’s side, not conclusions by a judge. Malwarebytes’ report

Is this the same case as other Roblox and Discord lawsuits?

No. Other lawsuits reported in 2025 concern different plaintiffs and alleged events. For example, Courthouse News reported on April 23, 2025, on a separate San Mateo County case involving a 10-year-old girl and an alleged kidnapping following contact through Roblox and Discord. That case should not be conflated with the suit involving the 13-year-old boy. Courthouse News’ report

In its coverage of that separate case, Courthouse News reported responses from both companies. Roblox said it invests in safety technology, including machine learning and human moderation, and works to address inappropriate behavior and attempts to share personal information or move users off-platform. Discord said it takes action when it detects policy violations, including removing content, banning users, shutting down servers, and contacting law enforcement when appropriate. Those statements were reported in connection with the separate lawsuit; they do not resolve the allegations in the case involving the 13-year-old. Courthouse News’ report

What do the reported Roblox user figures show?

Courthouse News cited figures attributed to Roblox’s 2023 company report: 68.5 million daily active users, with 42% of daily active users under 12 and 21% under 9. They describe Roblox’s reported audience in 2023, not its current user base, and do not establish how common grooming or exploitation is. Courthouse News’ report

What is known about the case’s status?

The available reporting does not establish the lawsuit’s current docket status, whether there have been later rulings, or whether it has settled or concluded. It is therefore not possible to say from these sources whether the case remains pending. The allegations and quoted statements by the plaintiff’s representatives should not be read as court findings.
