Players have complained about losing access to friends, being split into age groups, privacy, and checks they believe got their age wrong. Those are real concerns in public posts, but they do not show that most Roblox players oppose the change: there is no representative satisfaction measure in the available evidence.
What changed with Roblox chat?
Roblox announced in November 2025 that users would need to complete an age check to access chat. Enforcement was planned first for Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands in December, followed by a wider rollout. On January 7, 2026, Roblox said the global rollout was underway and would expand across regions over the following week. The current Help Center guidance says age checks are required for all chat and certain other features; access can also depend on account settings and region.
An age check is not a requirement to submit a face scan to use every part of Roblox. Roblox describes two ways to check age: facial age estimation, or government-issued photo ID verification for people 13 and older. The check is separate from the rules that determine who can communicate with whom.
How age groups affect who can chat
Roblox’s announced age groups are under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+. Depending on age and chat type, users may communicate within their own or similar groups. Roblox says Trusted Connections can let some age-checked users communicate across groups.

The exact options can vary with age, region, account configuration, and whether the conversation is in an experience or direct chat, so the age bands alone do not guarantee access to a particular conversation.
Why players are complaining—and what is not known
Public Reddit posts describe users who say they cannot chat with friends, object to submitting facial or ID information, dislike age-group separation, or encountered checks they say did not work as expected. These posts illustrate the kinds of frustration behind claims that players are “not happy,” but they are individual, self-selected accounts—not a poll.

Roblox reported that 45% of its 144 million daily active users globally had completed an age check during the seven days ending January 31, 2026. That is a company-reported uptake figure, not evidence that users approve of the policy. Roblox also reported that, among age-checked daily active users in that period, 35% were younger than 13, 38% were 13–17, and 27% were 18 or older. Those figures describe age cohorts, not sentiment.
No representative survey or reliable population-level measure of player satisfaction was identified in the available sources. It is accurate to say that complaints are visible; it is not established that most players are unhappy or that the update has reduced participation overall.

How Roblox says age checks work
Facial age estimation
Roblox says facial age estimation analyzes images and video of a user’s face. In its November 2025 announcement, the company said Persona processes this material and deletes it immediately after processing. These are Roblox’s descriptions of its data handling, not an independently audited guarantee.
In January 2026, Roblox said its age-estimation models had a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18, based on testing by the UK Age Check Certification Scheme. The announcement did not specify the test year, sample size, or fuller test details in the cited passage. The figure is a reported test result, not a promise that an individual’s estimate will be within 1.4 years.

Government-issued ID
Roblox says users aged 13 or older can verify age with a government-issued photo ID. ID verification is not available to younger users, according to the Help Center. Neither this route nor facial estimation should be treated as risk-free simply because Roblox describes its safeguards.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if Roblox got your age wrong
The correction route depends on the account holder’s age and the kind of mismatch. Roblox says users may be able to appeal or correct a result using ID verification or parental controls. The Help Center describes a linked parent updating the birthday of an under-18 child in specified circumstances, a one-time parent correction, a one-time reset for some adults, and a 48-hour grace period in a particular under-13 mismatch case. These are conditional options, not a universal promise that support can manually override every result.

- Use an available correction method: If eligible, complete ID verification or ask a linked parent to review parental controls and the account birthday.
- Use Roblox’s appeal or support route if the listed option does not fit: Explain what appears wrong and follow the instructions Roblox provides; do not assume every case has the same reset or grace-period eligibility.
Roblox’s safety rationale—and its limits
Roblox presents age checks as one part of a broader safety system. The company says it monitors text and voice communication, applies age-sensitive text filtering, blocks attempts to exchange personally identifiable information in some contexts, prohibits image and video sharing in chat, and offers blocking and reporting tools. These are descriptions of Roblox’s policies and systems, not independent proof that age checks have reduced harm.
In its January 2026 announcement, Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman and Vice President of User and Discovery Product Rajiv Bhatia wrote: “While no system (including Roblox) is perfect and we cannot prevent all objectionable content from appearing on Roblox, we do our best to detect and moderate content that violates our Community Standards and make it easy for users to report anything they do spot.”
Roblox’s November announcement also included endorsements from Jules Polonetsky, CEO of the Future of Privacy Forum, and Stephen Balkam, CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute. Their comments supported age assurance as a safety measure; they were statements quoted in Roblox’s announcement, not independent evaluations of the company’s implementation.
Quick Recap
What the update means for players
- Chat access is tied to an age check where Roblox has enabled the requirement, but that does not mean every Roblox feature requires a face scan.
- Completing a check does not guarantee access to chat with every friend: age group, chat type, settings, and region can affect communication.
- If a check seems wrong, the available correction depends on account circumstances; review the Help Center rather than assuming one remedy applies to everyone.
- Public complaints identify practical frustrations, but current evidence does not establish how common dissatisfaction is across Roblox’s player base.
