In scripts and content properties, the standard format is rbxassetid://ID, such as rbxassetid://7229442422. You can find the correct ID in Creator Dashboard or select the uploaded asset directly in Studio’s Asset Manager.
If an image works in Studio but not in a published game, check moderation status, asset privacy permissions, the selected part face, and whether the asset was archived before assuming the ID is wrong.

What is a Roblox decal or image ID?
Every Roblox cloud asset receives a unique numeric ID. An image or decal ID identifies the Roblox-uploaded artwork that you want to display on a part, mesh, user interface, or special effect.

Use the asset ID assigned by Roblox. Do not assume that every number appearing in an old library link, thumbnail URL, or webpage address is a separate “image ID.” The reliable value is the one exposed through Creator Dashboard or Studio.

Decal ID versus image ID
Roblox’s current tools list Decals and Images as separate Development Items categories. A decal also has an underlying image dependency, so the terms are related but should not be treated as universally interchangeable.
For a particular asset, copy the ID from that specific Decal or Image entry and confirm that the game has permission to use it. This avoids relying on old lists that label every Roblox artwork number as both a decal and an image ID.
How to find a Roblox decal or image ID
Method 1: Creator Dashboard
- Open Creator Dashboard.
- Go to Creation → Development Items.
- Select Decals or Images.
- Find the asset you need.
- Hover over its thumbnail, click the ⋯ menu, and choose Copy Asset ID.
Paste the copied value into a Studio property or add the rbxassetid:// prefix when assigning it in Lua.
Method 2: Studio Asset Manager
Open Roblox Studio and choose Window → Asset Manager. The Asset Manager is also available from the Home tab. It shows assets imported into the currently open experience, and an image can usually be selected directly from a relevant property instead of manually typing its ID.
Do not confuse Asset Manager with Toolbox. Asset Manager shows assets imported into the current game. Toolbox shows assets you or your groups have imported across Studio, as well as Creator Store assets. An image visible in Toolbox is not necessarily imported into the current experience or authorized for it.

How to upload an image or decal in Roblox Studio
- Open the experience in Roblox Studio.
- Open Window → Asset Manager.
- Use the image-import workflow in Asset Manager. The current workflow uses the Studio Importer.
- Select the image file and complete the import.
- Wait for Roblox moderation to process the asset.
The Asset Manager documentation lists .png, .jpg, .gif, .tga, and .bmp as supported image formats. Roblox’s Creator Hub usage guidance lists .png, .jpeg, .bmp, and .tga for the Decal, Image asset type and requires the file to be smaller than 8000×8000 pixels. See Roblox’s Asset Manager documentation and asset usage guidance for the current requirements.
The legacy Bulk Import tool remains available in the current Asset Manager and supports batches of up to 50 files.

Imported assets enter moderation. While an asset is in the moderation queue, players cannot see or interact with it in a published game. If Roblox rejects it, Roblox sends a notification explaining that it cannot remain on the platform in its current form.
How to put a decal on a Part
- In Explorer, select a Part or Union.
- Click its ⊕ button and add a Decal or Texture.
- Select the new object and open Properties.
- Set its Face to Top, Bottom, Front, Back, Left, or Right.
- Set ColorMapContent to the uploaded image, either by selecting it or entering its asset ID.
You can also drag an image from Asset Manager onto a valid parent such as a BasePart. Studio creates a Decal and presets its ColorMapContent to that asset.
To see which side of a part is which, right-click the part or union and choose Show Orientation Indicator. The indicator marks the front with F, shows a blue front-direction line, and uses a green arrow to indicate the top direction.

Decal or Texture?
| Object | Behavior | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Decal | Stretches one image across a selected part face. | Signs, logos, posters, labels, and one-off artwork. |
| Texture | Repeats the image horizontally and vertically and provides scale and offset controls. | Brick, fabric, patterns, floors, and surfaces that should tile. |
Both objects can be tinted with Color3. Their Transparency value ranges from 0 (fully visible) to 1 (invisible).
How to use an image ID in a Roblox GUI
- In Explorer, select StarterGui and click ⊕.
- Insert a ScreenGui.
- Select the ScreenGui, click ⊕, and insert an ImageLabel or ImageButton.
- Select the image object and set its image content to the uploaded asset.
An ImageLabel displays a non-interactive image. An ImageButton is appropriate when the player should be able to interact with it.
In a script, the traditional content-ID property can be assigned like this:
local imageLabel = script.Parent
imageLabel.Image = "rbxassetid://1234567890"
imageLabel.BackgroundTransparency = 1
The newer content-property form is:
local imageLabel = script.Parent
imageLabel.ImageContent = "rbxassetid://1234567890"
imageLabel.BackgroundTransparency = 1
Roblox documents ImageLabel, Image loading, and ImageContent separately. Use the property supported by the object and workflow in your project.
If a visible rectangle appears around the artwork, set BackgroundTransparency = 1. ImageLabel also supports ScaleType options for normal scaling, tiling, and nine-slice rendering. Sprite-sheet layouts can use ImageRectOffset and ImageRectSize.

Which Roblox asset URI should you use?
rbxassetid://
Use rbxassetid://ID when referencing a Roblox-uploaded image or decal across games, provided the destination experience has permission to use it.
rbxgameasset://
rbxgameasset://Images/Name is name-based and scoped to the current game. It is not a universal replacement for rbxassetid://. Objects copied or moved to another experience can fail or resolve differently because the name-based reference belongs to the original game.
For portable references, use the Roblox asset ID form.
Fixing an image that works in Studio but not in the published game
Check these causes in order:
- Moderation: Confirm that the asset is no longer awaiting moderation and was not rejected.
- Asset privacy: A restricted asset must be granted to the destination experience.
- Correct experience: Make sure the asset was imported into or authorized for the game you published.
- Archived asset: An archived asset is no longer visible or usable, including in games owned by its creator.
- Part face: A decal may be on the opposite side of the part from the camera.
- GUI settings: Check the Image or ImageContent value, BackgroundTransparency, ScaleType, size, and visibility.
- Transparency and tint: A transparency of
1, or a problematic Color3 tint, can make the image appear missing. - Reference syntax: In scripts, use the full
rbxassetid://IDURI.
Roblox’s Asset Privacy documentation and asset documentation cover the permission and availability rules.
Granting a restricted asset to a game
When Asset Privacy is enabled, newly created Image, Decal, and Mesh assets are Restricted by default. To give a restricted image or decal to an experience:

- Go to Development Items and choose Decals or Images.
- Select the asset.
- Open Permissions → Experiences → Add experiences.
- Enter the game’s universe ID in Enter Universe IDs.
- Click Add, then Done.
You can enter multiple universe IDs separated by commas.
To make a Decal openly usable, its underlying Image dependency must first be set to Open Use. That change is irreversible: after selecting Make Open Use, the asset cannot be returned to Restricted.
How to archive or recover a missing asset
In Creator Dashboard, go to Creations → Development Items. Hover over the asset thumbnail, click ⋯, and choose Archive.
Archiving removes the asset from the website and makes it unavailable and invisible in Roblox games, including games owned by the asset creator. If an image suddenly disappears everywhere, check whether it was archived as well as checking moderation and permissions.
Quick reference
| Need | Where to do it |
|---|---|
| Upload an image | Studio → Window → Asset Manager |
| Copy an ID | Creator Dashboard → Creation → Development Items → asset → ⋯ → Copy Asset ID |
| Apply artwork to a part | Add Decal or Texture, then set Face and ColorMapContent |
| Display artwork in a GUI | Insert ImageLabel or ImageButton, then set Image or ImageContent |
| Authorize a restricted asset | Creator Dashboard → Development Items → asset → Permissions → Experiences |
| Check orientation | Right-click the part → Show Orientation Indicator |
Key takeaway
A Roblox decal or image ID is the numeric ID assigned to an uploaded asset, normally used as rbxassetid://ID. Find it through Creator Dashboard or Studio rather than relying on an old URL. If the image does not appear, investigate moderation, privacy permissions, archiving, the target face, and GUI configuration—not just the number.
