Roblox set April 30, 2025, as the deadline to migrate experiences from Legacy Chat Service to TextChatService. The company began batch auto-migrations in May 2025, but its May 13 update confirmed only that rollout had started—not that every experience was migrated. To check a specific game, inspect its Roblox Studio project and runtime rather than relying on the platform-wide announcement.
What happened to Roblox Legacy Chat Service?
Roblox announced the retirement of legacy in-experience chat on October 30, 2024, then clarified the schedule on November 1. New experiences could no longer be created using legacy chat starting November 30, 2024. The announced migration deadline for the standard, unmodified system was April 30, 2025. Roblox said it would begin auto-migrating standard legacy experiences in May and reported on May 13 that batch migrations to TextChatService had started. Roblox’s announcements describe the schedule and rollout, but do not verify the migration status of any individual experience or confirm that all migrations are complete.
The replacement is TextChatService, Roblox’s built-in service for chat messages, filtering, moderation, permissions, and chat UI. Retirement does not mean every experience’s chat was necessarily switched at once or that its custom behavior automatically transferred intact.
Why is Roblox ending legacy chat?
Roblox said the primary reason was to make sure chat messages respect parental controls and Community Standards. In its November 1, 2024 announcement, the company said the change would support parental controls that give parents more control over who their children can speak with in an experience. Roblox had also cited security vulnerabilities and the difficulty of updating forked chat in a March 2023 announcement, but the later deprecation notice foregrounded parental controls.

Which chat implementations were affected?
Standard, unmodified legacy chat
Roblox’s announced route was migration to TextChatService by April 30, 2025, followed by auto-migration beginning in May. The rollout announcement is not an individual status report, so check the project’s current settings and behavior.
Forked or customized legacy chat
For custom or forked legacy chat, Roblox requested that creators integrate CanUserDirectChatAsync by January 30, 2025 as an interim measure, then migrate to TextChatService by April 30. Roblox warned that auto-migration might break custom integrations or leave behavior different from what the creator intended. Custom implementations should be reviewed feature by feature rather than assumed to work unchanged.

Chat built outside Roblox’s chat systems
Roblox’s initial policy notice also addressed independently built chat. It called for CanUserChatAsync and CanUserDirectChatAsync by January 30, 2025, followed by migration to TextChatService by April 30. The notice described possible compliance steps including auto-migration, disabling chat, and, as a last resort, restricting access to an experience.
How to check whether an experience uses TextChatService
Check the current project in Roblox Studio; historical rollout dates cannot tell you what is configured in a particular place. Roblox’s initial identification guidance pointed creators to copies of ChatScript or ChatServiceRunner in Chat, StarterPlayerScripts, or ServerScriptService, and to whether LoadDefaultChat was true. For the current migration route, inspect TextChatService and its ChatVersion property.

Roblox reported in May 2025 that Studio could warn about a mismatch: an experience might already use TextChatService at runtime while ChatVersion still reads LegacyChatService. Follow the current Creator Hub and Studio guidance for the project rather than treating that property alone as a complete account of runtime behavior.
How to migrate legacy chat to TextChatService
- In Roblox Studio, select
TextChatServicein Explorer. - Set its
ChatVersionproperty toTextChatService, following Roblox’s migration guidance. - Inventory custom commands, message handling, filtering, UI, tags, and delivery rules in the existing implementation.
- Replace each legacy behavior with the appropriate TextChatService API, then test the intended experience in Studio and at runtime.
Changing ChatVersion is a starting point, not a guarantee that custom features have been ported. Roblox advises manual migration for custom chat features when preserving intended behavior matters.

What to review when converting custom chat
TextChatService uses TextChannel objects to carry player messages through a client-server system. Default channels include RBXGeneral and RBXSystem when enabled. TextChatCommand supports custom commands, while the default UI can be configured or replaced using chat-window, input-bar, channel-tab, and bubble-chat configurations.
- Filtering and delivery: TextChatService automatically filters messages based on player account information. Its flow sends client messages through the server, checks delivery eligibility, filters messages, and delivers processed messages.
- Recipient rules: Server-side
ShouldDeliverCallbackcan control delivery per recipient, including for proximity chat. - Appearance: Client-side callbacks can customize message, chat-window, and bubble appearance.
- Callback behavior: Roblox says callbacks should not yield; waiting inside one can block chat behavior.
These API and architecture differences are why a custom legacy module should not be assumed to work unchanged after switching services. Use the Text chat overview and migration documentation to match the project’s requirements to supported equivalents.
