Roblox’s age-based account catalogs exclude social hangout games for users under 16. The change is not a blanket ban on social interaction: it limits which experiences appear in younger users’ catalogs. Separately, a social hangout that includes private spaces such as bedrooms or bathrooms is classified as Restricted, a category reserved for age-checked users who are at least 18.
What Roblox changed
Roblox introduced two account types for younger users: Roblox Kids for ages 5–8 and Roblox Select for ages 9–15. Both catalogs exclude experiences with social hangout or free-form drawing features, along with experiences featuring sensitive issues. Roblox announced that the system was globally available on June 16, 2026, after a staged rollout began in Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
| Account type | Age range | Catalog and chat |
|---|---|---|
| Roblox Kids | 5–8 | Games rated Minimal or Mild that pass additional selection review. Chat is disabled by default; a linked parent may allow in-game chat where available. |
| Roblox Select | 9–15 | Games rated Minimal, Mild, or Moderate that pass additional review. Chat settings increase gradually and may be changed by parents, subject to age and regional settings. |
| Roblox | 16 and older | The full Roblox experience is available after an age check, except for experiences in the Restricted category. |
During a transition period in most regions, Roblox places users who have not completed an age check into a Kids or Select catalog based on their self-declared age. Those users cannot chat or access the full Roblox experience. Age checks are required for chat and for access beyond the assigned catalog. Regional availability and settings can differ. Roblox’s global rollout announcement and its family guidance explain the account rules.
What Roblox means by “social hangout”
Roblox defines a social hangout as an experience whose primary theme or activity is chatting or interacting with other players by voice or text. An experience may also be classified as a social hangout if its title or description refers to social hangouts. That primary-purpose test does not mean every game with chat is a social hangout.

The category restriction is separate: a social hangout that includes private spaces such as bedrooms or bathrooms is Restricted. Roblox’s Restricted Content Policy says creators and users must be at least 18 and age checked to access that category. The 16–17 age group can use the full Roblox account but cannot access Restricted experiences.
Why a child may not be able to open a familiar game
Access depends on more than a game’s name or whether it has chat. Check the relevant factors in this order:

- Account age band: confirm whether the account is assigned to Roblox Kids, Roblox Select, or the full Roblox experience.
- Age-check status: an account without an age check has narrower access and cannot chat under the transition rules described by Roblox.
- Experience rating and classification: the Kids and Select catalogs have age-based maturity limits and exclude social hangouts; Restricted experiences have a separate 18+ age-check requirement.
- Region and parental settings: available games and features can vary by region, and linked parents can manage specific game access and available chat settings.
Roblox does not publish a complete list of experiences it has classified as social hangouts in these policy pages. For a specific game, check its Roblox listing and the account’s current eligibility; a public list of case-by-case classification decisions or appeals is not provided in the cited policy.
What parents can manage
A parent with a linked account can block or allow specific games and adjust available chat settings. For children ages 5–8, a parent may allow in-game chat where available, but age and regional rules still apply. Parents of children under 13 can also review friend lists, block or report connections, approve or decline Trusted Friend requests, and set screen-time and spending limits. The available controls depend on the child’s age.

Roblox’s May 2026 family guidance states: “Users who have not completed an age check cannot chat on Roblox, regardless of their age.” For the current options, use Roblox’s parent guide and linked Parental Controls rather than assuming that a setting available for one age band applies to another.
What the rule means for creators
Roblox says experiences need standard moderation and content maturity labels, with additional review and developer eligibility requirements for inclusion in Kids and Select catalogs. The company describes real-time evaluations of gameplay and reports from users aged 16 and older. Hangout experiences with private spaces belong in the Restricted category under the current policy. A game’s present availability does not guarantee that it will remain eligible for a younger catalog.

How this differs from Roblox’s 2024 policy
Roblox’s November 2024 developer-policy announcement described social hangouts as places such as vibe games, clubs, socializing, and supportive spaces where the primary purpose is communicating with other users as oneself. That policy change restricted some experiences to users over 13 starting November 18, 2024. The 2026 account catalogs establish a later, broader exclusion for users under 16; the two age thresholds should not be conflated. Roblox’s 2024 developer-policy announcement provides the earlier context.
What Roblox says about the catalog review
In its June 16, 2026 global rollout announcement, Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman wrote: “We check for appropriate content maturity labels, and do not allow any games that include social hangout or free-form drawing features or that feature sensitive issues.” Roblox describes the review rules, but the public materials cited here do not establish a measured safety outcome from excluding these experiences.
