Roblox’s age-check rollout is real, but the original headline needs clarification: Roblox is not asking only children for selfies. Since its phased rollout began in late 2025—and globally in January 2026—users of all ages generally need to complete an age check before using chat in regions where chat is available.
A selfie-based facial age estimate is one route. Users aged 13 and older may instead use government-ID verification. Refusing both can mean losing access to the affected chat features.

The short answer
- Is an age check mandatory? Roblox requires one for chat access in chat-enabled regions.
- Must everyone submit a selfie? No. Facial age estimation is one option; eligible users can use an ID check.
- Can children use ID verification? Roblox says government-ID verification is available only to users aged 13 and older.
- What does the result do? It places the account in an age group that helps determine chat relationships and feature access.
- Does Roblox keep the selfie? Roblox says imagery used for facial age estimation is deleted after processing. Identity verification has separate data-handling terms.
What Roblox announced—and when
Roblox announced its mandatory chat age-check plan on November 18, 2025. Enforcement began in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands in early December, followed by a global rollout on January 7, 2026, wherever Roblox chat was available. Roblox described the system as part of a broader effort to limit communication between adults and younger users.

The “tens of millions of children” wording is too specific to treat as a verified child count. Roblox said that tens of millions of daily active users had completed an age check by January 2026. That figure does not establish how many were children. Roblox’s 2025 annual report confirms that mandatory checks were introduced across chat-enabled regions, but it does not provide a verified total of children scanned.

How the selfie age check works
The selfie option uses the device camera to record a short, selfie-style video. Roblox says technology supplied by Persona analyzes facial features to estimate the user’s age. It is an age estimate, not proof of an exact birth date and not necessarily facial recognition that identifies the person.
Roblox’s current support documentation lists these age groups:
- 5–8
- 9–12
- 13–15
- 16–17
- 18–20
- 21+
To start the process, Roblox says to log in and open Settings → Account info. On desktop, use the gear icon at the top right. On mobile, select More (…) → Settings → Account info, then choose Continue with selfie. Eligible users may see Continue with ID instead. What changes after the age check?
The important change is not simply the camera prompt. Roblox uses the assigned age group to shape communication and access to some features. Its support guidance describes the following broad structure:
- Ages 5–8: Roblox Kids; chat is disabled by default, although parents may approve certain in-game chat options.
- Ages 9–12: Roblox Select; communication is generally with similar age groups or Trusted Friends, with parental permission where required.
- Ages 13–15: Roblox Select; similar-age chat and additional features are available.
- Ages 16–17: Chat is available with similar-age users and Trusted Friends, with broader feature access.
- Ages 18 and older: Full access to Roblox games and features remains subject to Roblox’s other rules.
Roblox has also described communication between a user’s own age group and directly adjacent groups. Regional rules and product-specific settings can differ. The stated goal is to prevent children younger than 16 from freely communicating with adults, but age checks do not make every interaction unrestricted or eliminate risks inside individual experiences.
An age check does not unlock every Roblox game
The check primarily governs age-sensitive communication and related features. Access to games also depends on Roblox’s content-maturity ratings, regional requirements, parental controls and account type. Roblox’s newer Roblox Kids and Roblox Select systems add further age-specific account and content layers.

What if Roblox gets the age wrong?
Facial estimates can be inconclusive or incorrect. Roblox documents several correction routes:
- Users aged 13 and older can use government-ID verification to correct their birthday.
- Users under 13 can use available birthday-edit controls, subject to Roblox’s restrictions.
- A linked parent account may be able to update a child’s birthday, generally with a one-time limitation.
- An account estimated as 18+ may have access to a one-time reset process.
- If someone who reported being over 13 is estimated under 13, Roblox says a 48-hour grace period applies before the new group takes effect unless the result is accepted immediately.
If the system cannot produce an estimate, Roblox may require ID verification to complete the process. That creates a practical problem for users under 13, who are not eligible for the ID route. Roblox also says customer support cannot manually verify IDs or remove existing verifications. Do not submit another person’s identification document.
Selfie estimation and ID verification are different privacy questions
Roblox says images and video used for facial age estimation are deleted after processing and that Roblox does not receive or store biometric data from that process.

Government-ID verification has a separate disclosure. Roblox’s biometric and facial-media privacy notice says Persona may capture a government ID and selfie, extract face geometry and compare the estimated facial age with the birth date on the ID. The notice says Roblox does not receive the biometric data itself, while Persona generally deletes biometric data within 30 days unless a longer period is required by law. It also says Roblox may access ID photos and selfies stored by Persona for training, product-improvement and compliance purposes.
So “Roblox deletes selfies immediately” is not a complete description of every verification pathway. The immediate-deletion statement concerns facial age-estimation imagery as Roblox describes it; ID verification is governed by different disclosures and may involve a retention period.

How accurate is the system?
Roblox says its Persona technology was tested and certified by third-party laboratories and reports a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18 in testing it cited. Mean absolute error is an average distance between an estimate and a measured age; it is not a promise that every user will be placed in the correct group.

Real-world results can still vary with age, lighting, camera quality and individual circumstances. The company’s own documentation acknowledges that the system is not perfect and points to ID checks, parent controls and correction mechanisms as safeguards. An incorrect result could restrict a legitimate conversation, place a child in an unsuitable group or force an ineligible user toward a route they cannot use.
What parents should check
- Review the child’s assigned age group and whether it matches their real age.
- Check Settings → Privacy & content restrictions → Communication.
- Decide whether the child needs chat at all; parental controls can reduce its practical importance.
- Link a parent account where appropriate, knowing that birthday corrections may be limited.
- Explain that Roblox may request a selfie-style video or, for users 13 and older, government ID.
- If the result is wrong, use Roblox’s documented correction route rather than someone else’s ID.
- Continue using blocking, reporting, spending limits, screen-time limits and content-maturity controls.
Age checks address one problem—unverified or misrepresented ages—but they do not eliminate grooming, harassment, harmful content, evasion or unsafe behavior within a game. Roblox presents the system as one layer of protection, not a complete child-safety solution.
