The Legion Go is the larger, more versatile machine, with an 8.8-inch 16:10 display, detachable controllers, a kickstand and FPS mouse mode. The ROG Ally is smaller and more conventional, with fixed controls and a 7-inch 1080p display supporting VRR.
For a fair performance comparison, match the Ryzen Z1 Extreme Legion Go with the Ryzen Z1 Extreme ROG Ally. The standard Ryzen Z1 Ally is a different, substantially weaker configuration. In 2026, both original devices are mainly relevant as discounted, refurbished or used purchases.

Do not mix these products: the original Legion Go, the original ROG Ally, the ROG Ally X, newer Xbox-branded Ally models and the Legion Go Gen 2 are different devices.

ASUS likewise offered the original ROG Ally with both chips. Listings, reviews and used-market advertisements often shorten both product names, so check the processor before comparing price or performance.

The Z1 Extreme models are the sensible comparison. Even then, frame rates are affected by power mode, BIOS and driver versions, game resolution, cooling, memory allocation, upscaling and frame caps. “Same performance” means broadly similar platform capability at comparable settings—not identical results in every game.

Performance: similar foundations, different workloads
Both handhelds use AMD’s Ryzen Z1 family and integrated Radeon graphics. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme has the graphics resources needed for demanding modern PC games; the standard Z1 Ally should be treated as a budget variant rather than a performance equal.
Resolution is especially important. The Legion Go’s native 2560×1600 output requires substantially more rendering work than the Ally’s 1920×1080 output. Comparing a Go running at native resolution with an Ally running at 1080p does not establish which device is faster. For a useful comparison, use the same internal resolution, power profile, game version, upscaler and frame-rate limit.
In practice, both original Z1 Extreme handhelds are better suited to sensible compromises than maximum settings. Depending on the game, that may mean 1280×800 or 1920×1200 on the Go, 720p or 900p on the Ally, AMD FSR or another upscaler, and a capped frame rate. The Go’s sharper panel gives you more display flexibility, but the APU cannot make every game a native-1600p experience.
Display: the Legion Go’s clearest advantage
The Legion Go has a physically much larger 8.8-inch 16:10 touchscreen. Its up-to-2560×1600 resolution and 144Hz maximum refresh rate provide more room for strategy games, simulations, RPG interfaces, text and ordinary Windows use.
The Ally’s 7-inch 16:9 1920×1080 touchscreen is smaller and easier to drive. ASUS lists a 120Hz refresh rate with FreeSync Premium/VRR support. VRR can be more useful than a higher maximum refresh rate when a handheld’s frame rate fluctuates: instead of waiting for a fixed refresh cadence, the display can better follow the rendered frame rate.

- GAME-READY STORAGE AND FAST MEMORY Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
Neither device will sustain 120Hz or 144Hz in every demanding game. The real choice is between the Go’s size and vertical space and the Ally’s compact screen with explicitly promoted VRR support. Do not describe the original Go as having an Ally-equivalent VRR experience without verifying the exact model and firmware.
- Choose the Go’s display for immersion, desktop usability, strategy games and readable interfaces.
- Choose the Ally’s display if compactness and smoother handling of fluctuating frame rates matter more.
Battery and portability
The Legion Go has a 49.2Wh battery versus 40Wh in the original Ally. That is a capacity advantage, not a guaranteed runtime advantage. The Go also powers a larger, higher-resolution display, and runtime depends on brightness, resolution, refresh rate, game load, wireless use, power mode and frame caps.
Neither original device is an all-day AAA gaming console away from a charger. Indie games and emulation can last materially longer than demanding releases, while plugged-in play makes battery capacity less important than thermals, controls and display quality. A fair runtime claim requires testing the same game at the same brightness, power limit and frame-rate cap.
For travel, also consider charger size, USB-C Power Delivery capability, sleep reliability and resume behavior. A generic phone power bank or charger may not provide the sustained output the handheld expects.

Why the Legion Go feels different
The Go’s TrueStrike controllers detach from the screen. Its built-in kickstand supports tabletop play, and FPS mode lets the right controller work more like a mouse. Lenovo also includes a trackpad, mouse wheel and additional assignable inputs. These features can make Windows navigation and mouse-heavy games less awkward.
Detachable controllers are useful rather than merely decorative: the Go can be used on a table, and separated controllers can suit certain local multiplayer situations. They also introduce extra parts to carry and more mechanical connection points to inspect on a used device. The Go is larger, and its balance will not suit every hand.
Why the Ally feels simpler
The Ally has fixed controls in a smaller, conventional handheld body. There is less to configure or detach, and it is a better fit for someone who wants to pick up the device and use a familiar gamepad layout. That simplicity comes at the cost of the Go’s tabletop, mouse and controller-separation options.

There is no universal ergonomic winner. Grip shape, hand size, game type and tolerance for weight matter more than a specification sheet.
Windows usability and manufacturer software
Both run Windows 11 Home and can access Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox PC Game Pass, Battle.net, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, emulators and ordinary Windows applications. That openness is a major advantage over platform-locked consoles, but Windows is not designed primarily for a small controller-operated screen.
Expect occasional touchscreen navigation, on-screen keyboard frustration, launcher updates, UAC prompts, desktop scaling issues, lost controller focus and games that still require a mouse. Sleep and resume behavior can also vary by game and Windows update.
Lenovo’s control layer is Legion Space; ASUS uses Armoury Crate SE. These tools manage performance profiles, controls, firmware and game launching, but labels and options can change with updates. Treat any menu path as version-dependent rather than permanent. If a title launches at an unusable resolution, restore a supported resolution through Windows display settings or the game’s own configuration files before judging performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage, microSD and docking
Original retail configurations vary, including 512GB and 1TB SSD options. Modern AAA games can fill either drive quickly, so confirm the exact capacity rather than trusting a generic product name. The Go’s documentation lists PCIe Gen 4 SSD configurations and microSD expansion; the Ally also supports expandable storage.
Recommended Free Tools
Internal SSD storage is generally preferable for frequently played, large games. A microSD card is convenient for a broader library, but avoid unverified cards and expect different loading behavior. If buying used, confirm SSD capacity in Windows and test the card reader.
The Go offers USB-C connectivity with DisplayPort support, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth and microSD expansion. ASUS lists a USB-C combination port with charging and DisplayPort support on the original Ally. A USB-C dock can add HDMI or DisplayPort, USB accessories and Ethernet, turning either device into a compact desktop. Check the exact dock’s display standard, USB speeds and sustained Power Delivery output. A high-resolution external monitor does not give the handheld more graphics performance.

Value in 2026: price the exact condition and SKU
Original Go and Ally prices are volatile because remaining stock may be clearance, refurbished or used. Compare like for like:
- Ryzen Z1 versus Ryzen Z1 Extreme.
- SSD capacity and included microSD card.
- New, certified-refurbished or used condition.
- Warranty length and return policy.
- Original charger, case and accessories.
- Battery health and visible wear.
Do not use launch pricing as current value, and do not use the newer Legion Go Gen 2’s price to justify an original model. Lenovo’s US Gen 2 page showed a starting price of $1,099.99 when observed on August 16, 2026, but that is a newer product with different hardware, including OLED display options, VRR, a larger battery and newer Ryzen Z2-series configurations. Check the live listing and region before treating that figure as current.
Used-device inspection checklist
Legion Go
- Detach and reconnect both controllers; test the release buttons and rails.
- Test the trackpad, mouse wheel, FPS-mode sensor and every button.
- Inspect the kickstand hinge and screen for defects or touch dead zones.
- Test the microSD reader and verify SSD capacity in Windows.
- Confirm the charger works and that the case and accessories are included.
ROG Ally
- Test both sticks for drift, plus triggers, bumpers and face buttons.
- Inspect the USB-C port for looseness and test charging.
- Test touch input, the microSD reader and VRR behavior.
- Confirm whether it is the Ryzen Z1 or Ryzen Z1 Extreme model.
- Check battery health, charger compatibility and return rights.
Who should buy which?
Buy the Legion Go if you:
- Prioritize the largest and sharpest screen.
- Play strategy, simulation, RPG or desktop-heavy games.
- Want detachable controllers, a kickstand or FPS mode.
- Expect to use tabletop or docked setups.
- Find a Z1 Extreme model substantially cheaper than an equivalent Ally.
Buy the ROG Ally if you:
- Want the smaller, more traditional handheld.
- Prefer fixed controls and less hardware to manage.
- Value VRR for fluctuating frame rates.
- Mostly play at 720p, 900p or 1080p.
- Find the Z1 Extreme model with a better warranty or meaningfully lower price.
Who should buy neither original model?
Skip both if you need all-day battery life, silent operation, a completely console-like interface, easy guaranteed long-term repairs or modern AAA games at maximum resolution. Also compare current-generation devices directly if their price is close enough to remove the original models’ value advantage. The Steam Deck OLED remains worth considering for buyers who value a more console-like interface, although its game compatibility and Windows-store flexibility differ.
Final verdict
The Lenovo Legion Go is the more ambitious and versatile device. Its large 16:10 screen, detachable controllers, kickstand, trackpad and FPS mode make it better for buyers who want more than a conventional handheld.
The original ASUS ROG Ally is the simpler and smaller choice. Its fixed controls, compact body and VRR-focused display suit buyers who want a traditional handheld experience.
If both are the same price and both use the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, choose the Legion Go for its screen and flexibility, or the ROG Ally for compact ergonomics and VRR. In 2026, however, the deciding factor should be the exact SKU, condition, warranty and discounted price—not the product name alone.
