The company says age checks support age-based communication; the requirement does not, by itself, establish a user’s identity or prove that the platform is safe from abuse. Roblox announced the global chat requirement on January 7, 2026, after describing a phased rollout in November 2025.
Why is Roblox asking you to verify your age to chat?
Roblox says age checks allow it to place users into age groups and limit chat to people in the same or similar age ranges. Its November 2025 rollout announcement described age-banded communication and limits on communication between adults and minors. The company presented the policy as a safety measure, not merely an account-setting change. Roblox’s November 2025 announcement
The distinction matters: an age check is meant to estimate or establish an age range for communication features. It is not necessarily a legal identity check, and the policy should not be read as proof that every user has been correctly classified. Roblox’s description of the system explains its intended design, not an independently demonstrated reduction in harm.
When did the chat age-check requirement begin?
- November 2025: Roblox announced a phased introduction of age checks for communication, including age-based chat and limits on communication between adults and minors. Roblox’s rollout announcement
- January 7, 2026: Roblox said facial age checks were required to chat, describing the measure as a new safety approach and saying age-based chat limits communication to users in the same or similar age groups. Roblox’s January announcement
The January announcement marks the point at which Roblox described the chat requirement as live globally; the earlier announcement had outlined a phased rollout. Account features and available routes may change, so consult Roblox Support’s current age-check guidance for the latest account-specific instructions.

Can you chat on Roblox without a face scan?
Roblox describes facial age estimation as an age-check method, but its materials also mention alternatives or correction routes in particular circumstances. These include ID verification and parent-linked controls. Their availability depends on the situation and account; they should not be treated as universally available substitutes for the face-based age check. Roblox has not said that every user must submit government ID.
Facial age estimation and ID verification are different processes. The former estimates an age range from a face; ID verification uses an identity document. Parent-linked controls can be relevant to correcting or managing account information, but they are not the same thing as a universal parental bypass for chat eligibility. What does the age check establish—and what does it not?
Roblox’s stated system links age-check completion to age-group placement and chat access. It does not establish that a user’s identity has been independently confirmed in every case, that every age estimate is accurate, or that age-based chat prevents grooming or other abuse. The available announcements describe the policy and its intended safety function; they do not provide independent causal evidence that the measure has reduced harm.
That limit is especially important because a communication rule is only one part of platform safety. The existence of an age check should not be treated as a guarantee that children cannot encounter inappropriate contact or content elsewhere on the service.

How does the policy relate to criticism and lawsuits?
The requirement arrived amid continuing public criticism and lawsuits concerning child safety on Roblox. The Associated Press reported on November 18, 2025, that the company was expanding age verification for chat and introducing age-based chats against that backdrop. Those lawsuits and criticisms are allegations and public concerns; their existence does not establish that the new system resolves them or that a court has found the claims proven. In a February 5, 2026 announcement, Roblox reported that 45% of its 144 million daily active users globally had completed an age check.
